Closing Oleg's Gate

I have a group that I just started and the first thing they did when ambushing the bandits is to close the gate, locking the bandits in. Combat had already started, so I'm trying to figure out how much time it would take to close the gate (in rounds) and what strength checks (or anything else) it might take to close it. Ideas?

Strength checks are... generally unneeded.

Let's consider the carrying capacity tables and their effects on movement.

A Strength 10 common has a heavy encumberance rating of 100 Lbs. He can also lift and carry up to twice this at a speed of 5 feet per full round action. He can drag 500 pounds at about the same speed, and favorable conditions make this even easier.

Now we are talking about a gate here. Gates are meant to be opened and closed -- so this is definitely a favorable condition for the character.

IF they have enough strength that the door is under 1/2 of their maximum drag I would let the character do it in one round as a full round action. In true if it's a single gate two people should be able to close it in one round without trouble even if they are only average strength (str 10).

My group used the wagon in the trading post to do something similar (since the bandits brought in horses and always had the players figured the wagon in the way would be enough to allow them the time to take care of the bandits).

greetings, fellow travelers.

i have the pleasure to run this encounter in two days' time - my players have done most of the planning, but actual combat will take place on wednesday. they, also, decided to close the gates and i agree with abraham spalding.
i opted for a full-round action, needing two people (one for each leaf), but no checks.

ruyan.

SPOILER WARNING: GM's Only:

Its a good idea on the players parts, so they can't escape. But do remember that not all Pudz or Baddies are stupid. Hopps, the Leader on the Raid has 2 flasks of Alchemists Fire. If he believes Oleg "betrayed him" he might launch them at buildings in opposite Directions. Stables are full of Dry Hay / horse feed. Now if a fire starts in 1-2 buildings, does the party keep fighting or help put them out? They are bandits, they are like Animals. They live free the way they want, they don't like to be caged in.

Up to you of course as GM's, but it will show the party's involved that you can't plan for everything ;)

Mine had the same plan: the players let the bandits in (and set up in ambush in various buildings), then had one of their hirelings close the gate. (There were only three players with no frontline fighters so I let them hire a couple of mercenaries. They specifically said they wanted big muscles and low brainpower, so that's what they got.... Goofy noticed that one of the bandits was a girl, so he jumped off the gate and tried to topple her from her horse. Totally failed; the girl used her horse to beat open the gate and considerable hijinks ensued.)

Loads of fun, though.

It sounds like we are on the same path. My group (a party of 6) begins this campaign in earnest this Wednesday evening. We did have one preliminary intro game where the party answered the calling for adventure. They actually met in Restov and began the journey towards the Oleg's.

To date they ran into a stampeding herd of elk which turned out to be an interesting dilemna on how to avoid being stampeded to death. The party actually has an ox with wagon, as they were transporting mundane trade merchandise to Oleg's for the swordlords, and the question of do I jump in the wagon or stand my ground crossed a couple members mind. Vision was obsured because the white snow under the hooves of the elk. They choose to get in the wagon and next to the ox.

The party also managed to draw the attention of two Thylacine's one evening.

This is actually what I had happen - one of my players started closing the gate so I had him toss an alchemists fire into the stables. If anyone wants to read what's happening you can follow here:
