Duergar moved to N14 to attack Whiteclaw. My bad. It's in my notes but for some reason didn't make it into the post.

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter

This post assumes the Duergar moved to O14 to attack Whiteclaw. Please adjust my action if he moved somewhere else.

Also, I made my save, but I still take the 4 hp ongoing damage at the start of the round, making me bloodied (13 of 31) and granting me a +1 to attack rolls thanks to my Dragonborn Fury. Correct?

As the firepot flames singe his flesh, Anarak can feel his blood boil in anger. He seethes and looks around for someone on which to unleash his fury. With his immediate foes having retreated into the forest, he settles on the Duergar and the few kobolds remaining in the vicinity. He steps forward purposefully.

Move Action: Move to M13 (via N11-N12)

Ignoring K5 for the moment, he lets out a roar and belches out a streak of lightning, catching both the Duergar and K2.

Minor Action: Dragon Breath
Dragon Breath on Duergar: 1d20+10 = 22 vs Reflex for 1d6+3 = 7 electrical damage.
Dragon Breath on K2: 1d20+10 = 21 vs Reflex for 1d6+3 = 7 electrical damage.

Without waiting to survey the effects of this torrent, Anarak immediately launches a spinning attack on the kobold to his left.

Standard Action: Passing Attack
First Attack on K5: 1d20+8 = 20 vs AC for 1d12+4 = 8 damage.
If that hits, he'll use the momentum of the spin to shift to N14 and make his second attack against the unsuspecting Duergar. Unfortunately he nearly trips over the gnoll in the process, and his axe falls harmlessly to the side.
Second Attack on Duergar: 1d20+10 = 11 vs AC.

Unwilling to let the Duergar off the hook so easily, Anarak quickly regains his footing and sends a backhanded slash at the enemy. Using an Action Point and getting a +1 from Kia.

Standard Action: Comeback Strike (Daily Power)
Comeback Strike on Duergar: 1d20+9 = 20 vs AC for 2d12+4 = 15 damage.
If the Comeback Strike is successful, Anarak is able to expend a healing surge to regain 10 hp, going to 23 of 31.

In the process of making these whirlwind attacks, the flames from the firepot attacks are inadvertantly extinguished.
Save vs ongoing fire damage: 1d20 = 15

K2, K5, and the Duergar are now marked.

Ok, np. Anarak will shift to M14 instead of N14 to attack the Duergar.

Anarak

Spoiler:

Awesome image Anarak. And yes, you are correct about Dragonborn fury. You are +1 on attack rolls while bloodied.

The blast of electricity strikes the duergar and Kobold 2 sending cascades of damaging voltage over them. As he rages his way towards the duergar, Kobold 5 takes the full weight of the dragonborn's wrath. Anarak's direct attack on the aberrant dwarf just misses however and The fanantical cleric steps away, his sneer growing wider and his eyes glowing evilly.

"An opponent worthy to send to Zemeboh. We shall meet scaley one, we shall meet."

Spoiler:

The duergar uses his minor power to shift one sqaure - it's part of Infernal Wrath which he invoked to set fire to Whiteclaw.

Duergar now at O14. Kobold 5 even bloodier.

All

Spoiler:

New map will be up later this morning, but for reference, and in case Gobi and Whiteclaw want to move before it arrives, this is where you all are:

Gobi - J10 - bloodied
Whiteclaw - N13 - bloodied
Kobold 1 - R15
Kobold 2 - N16 - marked by Anarak
Kobold 3 - U12
Vel - no move posted
Kia - K10
Baldrech - K12
Duergar - O14 - marked by Anarak
Kobold 5 - L13 - even bloodieder - marked by Anarak
Kobold 7 - V13 - bloodied
Anarak - M14 - bloodied

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter

Anarak should be at M14 not M13. He shifts even though he missed the dwarf. Also, the Duergar is marked with my Combat Challenge. So do I get an opportunity attack when he shifts using Infernal Wrath?

Because I missed with my last attack, I don't expend my Comeback Strike. I also don't get to use the healing surge, so I'm still bloodied (at 13) and visibly wounded.

Thanks. Have made those amendments. Shifting does not provoke an OA. Sorry.

Please see a couple of posts up for positions. Map due shortly

Gobi

Spoiler:

As you scan the battlefield with your warrior's eyes, you notice something moving behind the stone altar. You are too distracted to do much more than note the movement, but it does register with you.

And finally in the morning's plethora of posts, the one that will be remotely useful. An updated MAP.

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

I wasn't confused at all by all the smacking down yesterday. I've updated the profile to show Whiteclaw's current conditon. And, since she's bloodied, her bloodfury ability comes on, giving her +2 damage.

Whiteclaw grins at the Duergar, her sharp teeth glinting in the light. "You've chosen the worst possible place to mouth off." Her flail swings around and in, but the weapon is a feint. Her real attack comes from a swipe of her shield.

Using Tide of Iron. If it hits, I shift him to N14, and move into his square, which puts him into a nicely flanked position.

Whiteclaw's flail winds itself around the duergar's legs and combines with the force of her shield to force him between her and the enraged dragonborn.

Spoiler:

Nifty work. I'd forgotten about the Tide of Iron square shifting.
Whiteclaw's attack on the duergar using Tide of Iron: (1d20 6=21, 1d10 5=14).
Please can you roll to save v the ongoing fire damage as well.

Forced movement does not provoke OAs, with rare exceptions noted in the specific power, such as Cause Fear.

Thanks! As always this kind of stuff is at your fingertips. Edited.

Gobi?

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter

I'm confused about the ruling regarding my opportunity attacks. You wrote that shifting does not provoke an OA, but my Fighter class power (Combat Challenge) grants me an OA against an marked adjacent foe who shifts, which I think I would get when the Duergar shifts because of Infernal Wrath. Is there some reason why I wouldn't get one?

And am I correct in understanding that I don't get an OA as a result of a shift from Tide of Iron because it's a forced movement?

Not trying to rules lawyer, just trying to learn and understand what's going on...

That's right. Whiteclaw's Tide of Iron was a forced move on the duergar, so it doesn't provoke an OA. I was confused too, but I've checked - and in fact the identical situation came up in our home game last night. Same discussion and same result there too.

Makes sense. What about the first shift though?

Just been looking back - yes, you should have an OA on the first shift. Can you roll a basic melee attack on him for me please?. I know you're not rules lawyering, we're all working things out. I hadn't realised until quite late on that the duergar could even do that as long as it was before his next turn.

Anarak takes an additional halfhearted swing at the backpedaling Duergar but once again, to his dismay and frustration, only manages to strike a glancing blow on the dwarf's mail.

Opportunity Attack: 1d20+9 = 16 vs AC

He cries out in anger, "Could use your help here, Vel! Something to get past his infernal armor!"

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Will none of these fools aid me? Arianwyn curses to himself as he struggles.

Gobi

Spoiler:

Gobi - apologies, but I need to move this on. Hope all is well with you.

GOBI in absentia

As the duergar is already marked by Anarak, I won't issue a Divine Challenge on him. Instead, you will challenge Kobold 5 who is very wounded indeed on the basis that if he survives to the next round, if he doesn't attack you, the collateral damage from your 3+3 will finish him.

As he strides towards his adverary, the paladin calls across to Baldrech. "Movement behind the altar." and notices a very slight flicker of fear in the duergar's eyes.

Invoking the power of Avandra, Gobi stares at Kobold 5, defying him to attack anyone else before moving to attack the duergar with his own warhammer. He is filled with revulsion at the dangerous renegade. Once again invoking his goddess and placing his faith in her powers, he strikes. There is a satisfying crunch as the blow lands hard.

Gobi's attack on the duergar: (1d20 4=21, 1d10 2=5)

Gobi is now at O13

The kobold slingers exchange horrified glances, as they try to do more damage with their final firepots.

Kobold 1 aims at the dwarf, but the firepot bounces away, burning futilely. He chitters and runs behind the altar, drawing his dagger. Kobold 1 to P17.

Kobold 2 realising he has somehow been cursed by the dragonborn, aims hopefully and squeaks with satisfaction as the pot lands. As the fighter bursts into flame again, he skitters out of range. Kobold 2 to J17.

Spoiler:

Kobold 2 firepot at Anarak: (1d20 7=25, 1d6 3=4) Anarak 4hp with the usual 2hp ongoing fire damage please.

Kobold 3 spots Vel's exposed position and moves towards the mage, cackling uneasily before unleashing firey doom on her. Overjoyed at his success, he bounces up and down.

"Nasty sticky fire. Hurts doesn't it?" Kobold 3 to O8

Spoiler:

Kobold 3 firepot at Vel: (1d20 7=20, 1d6 3=9). Vel 9hp and 2hp ongoing fire damage please.

VEL, KIA, BALDRECH, DUERGAR up next.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

How ignominious... trussed by bearded savages...

Female Human Wizard 11 / Master of Flame

"Do not approach me," Vel hisses at the slinger as she approaches. With a gesture, a blast of force and sound lashes at the kobold. The force effect extinguishes the flames.

Move to L7
Thunderwave vs K3 (fort), save vs fire (1d20 4=13, 1d6 4=9, 1d20=20)
And I'm bloodied. If that hits K3, he is pushed to Q10

The mage's elemental power hoists the kobold off its feet and back into the trees. The force of the blow makes the creature squawk and it glowers at Vel.

"Not fair playing with thunder."

As noted, Kobold 3 is now at Q10

Male Longtooth Shifter Ranger 1

Taking note of Gobi's words, and slashing contemptuously at Kobold 5 as he passes, Baldrech barely pauses to see the creature finally slump dead to the ground.

Baldrech's two weapon attack on Kobold 5: (1d20 6=7, 1d8 3=8, 1d20 6=25, 1d8 3=10)

Easing behind the altar, he looks down and what is probably a laugh emerges from the saturnine shifter.

"Ha! Naked eladrin. What next?" He catches sight of Kobold 1 approaching from the other side. "Not this time." He bares his teeth and his longswords flicker menacingly.

Behind the altar lies a trussed, blindfolded and gagged but otherwise nude eladrin. The usual elegance of the race is marred by a noticeable number of scrapes and bruises. Close by the altar and carefully out of reach of the prisoner lies a longsword of eladrin workmanship. The prisoner is looking extremely unhappy and unintelligible noises are coming from him.

Kobold 5 is dead.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Spear of Arianrhod! Untie me, you growling oaf! thinks said prisoner.

I noticed something. Ongoing damage of the same type does not stack. You only take the higher of the damages each turn. So last turn Anarak should only have taken 2hp fire damage instead of 4. I think the same thing happened to Gobi and maybe someone else. PHB 278. Rather than backtrack, it might be simpler to leave things for this combat and just apply that rule next time...

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter

A captured Eladrin? I thought that required a 60' granite prison... Anarak thinks to himself as the flames singe his flesh once more.

He finds inner resolve despite his failing health and a low growl signals his desire to press the fight against the Duergar, if he lives until his next turn.

Probably shouldn't have marked the whole army :)

You're right. It would be Anarak, Gobi and Whiteclaw this affects. As a one off ruling for this combat only, please can you give yourselves another 4hp to try and balance things out a bit. By my calculations that puts Anarak at 17, Gobi at 21 and Whiteclaw at 18.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

They knew what they were about, anyway. he thinks Blindfold and rope... otherwise I would be free as one of Queen Beruthiel's cats!

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

Yep, with the change I'm at 18. So I'm not bloodied, barely, and hence lose the damage bonus. My save roll was a 6, so fire is still on me.

Female Eladrin Warlord/10

Kia looks around the battleground. Then shouts at Anarak. "I think you need to have another try against that Duergar, don't you? I'm with you all the way." She says.

That's Commander's Strike once more. She's not healing Anarak because he could probably do with the extra +2 to hit.

She moves to J15 to try and get a look at what people seem to be seeing behind the alter.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

Aha! A fellow of the twilight courts! And a lady to boot... Now I really need to get out of this! I have no objection to a certain amount of restraint in certain situations but this is not one of them...

Anarak needs no second bidding and his great axe slices upwards, just managing to bite through the duergar's armour.

Assaulted on all sides, the duergar draws himself upright and throws his beard quills ineffectually at Anarak. Something seems to be unsettling him.

"Zemeboh will strengthen me and guide my hands." He hefts his warhammer again and steps backwards. Duergar to P16

Kobold 7 hurtles forward and jabs at Whiteclaw's exposed back, taking advantage of the gnoll's attention being elsewhere. Chuckling slyly, he darts away again. Kobold 7 to P13

Spoiler:

Kobold 7 attack on Whiteclaw: (1d20 7=19, 1d8=5). Whiteclaw, your bloodied status is back again.

It would be just 2 hp for me since I made the save on the first try. I'll be at 11 and on fire. In good shape for a dragonborn!

Also, and more importantly, you missed some bonuses for my Kia strike. I'm +10 to hit (+4 str, +2 proficient, +1 fury, +1 fighter talent, +2 flanking) and +7 on damage (+4 str, +3 kia strike). It was a hit anyway, but should be an extra 3 damage, making it 13 total.

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter
Rev DM wrote:

Duergar was at N14 from Tide of Iron. Is he really moving to P16? Whether it's movement or shifting, Anarak gets an OA since he's marked.

Shifting while marked is another big no-no. If the Duergar does make the attempt, Anarak attempts to cut him down. He's still gloating over his last attack, however, and fails to get in a good swing.

1d20+10 = 14 vs AC

If he does move a second square to P16, Whiteclaw would also get an opportunity attack when the Duergar leaves O15.

I'll wait to post to see if the Duergar actually takes the second step, because it will affect whether I try to get flanking. This guy's going down big time.

Spoiler:

Yup he really is moving back. He doesn't want you anywhere near that altar. I have amended his damage and he's now bloodied. Whiteclaw also get an OA on him.

Whiteclaw's OA on duergar: (1d20 6=21, 1d10 5=15)

Under Whiteclaw and Anarak's furious pursuit, the duergar now looks as if he's suffering for the first time. The companions exchange triumphant glances and prepare to finish the cleric.

"Heathens, defilers. You have no idea what you deal with, puny fools." he gasps.

Male Dragonborn Level 2 Fighter

Actually, I won't be online again for 10 hours, so here are two actions, depending on the location of the Duergar.

If Duergar only shifts to O15:

Spoiler:
Anarak circles around the Duergar and attacks him from behind. Move to O16 (via M15-M16-N17-O16). I don't have a map handy, but I think I can do that without giving an OA to a kobold. I'll make the move either way. Then:

Comeback Strike: 1d20+10 = 17 vs AC

If Duergar continues his move to P16:

Spoiler:
Anarak takes advantage of the respite to gain a Second Wind. Then he moves to P17 (via M15-M16-M17-N18-P17) to maintain adjacency on his mark while giving Whiteclaw a flanking opportunity. Again, I don't have the updated map handy, so I'll provoke kobold attacks along the way if necessary.

Not sure. Checking and will confirm. Between you you've just taken him down 28hp ... which is why dragonborn and gnolls make bad enemies.[/ooc]

EDIT: P17 already contains Kobold 1. You may wish to amend your position.

Male Eladrin Warlock (Feypact) 13 - Multiclass Bard - Hexer Paragon Path

You can make multiple OAs BUT you may only make 1 OA against each opponent. In effect each opponent can only provoke an OA from an individual once per round.

Gobi
Whiteclaw

You're up. Arianwyn can do little but struggle really, but even if he comes up with a cunning plan it seems unlikely to affect you two, so go for it.

Current positions for reference - map will go up asap, but at least you can identify where everyone is this way.

Gobi - O13
Whiteclaw - O14 - bloodied
Kobold 1 - P17
Kobold 2 - J17 - marked by Anarak
Kobold 3 - Q10
Vel - L7 - bloodied
Kia - J15
Baldrech - M18
Duergar - P16 - bloodied
Kobold 7 - P13
Anarak - M14? - bloodied (position is guesswork based on posted movement)

Gobi looks around at his comrades in arms along with the Duergar. He calls upon his deity for strength as he turns his gaze on a nearby kobold, staring him down grimly before taking a Holy Strike in the name of Avandra.

Since there's a kobold in my desired spot, please move me to O17 instead of P17. Whiteclaw can probably still get flanking if she wants. Did she take that OA when the Duergar moved?

fyi the Duergar is also still marked by me.

And I forgot to make my save against burning.

Save vs ongoing fire damage: 1d20 = 19
I really wish I was rolling 19's to hit.

Since I made the save, and used my second wind, my defenses are increased by 2, and I'm no longer bloodied. With the 2 hp fire damage from the start of my turn, I'm at 19 of 31.

She did. She took 15hp off him. He is suffering. Poor duergar.

Also you may all wish to note that Arianwyn is at N18. Don't tread on him.

Female Gnoll Warden 12 (Icewrought Sentinel)

Heh, too early in the morning for me to figure out where best to move with just grid spots locations, so just move me to keep flanking the duergar. Basic attack on him, fire save is a 20!

Whiteclaw keeps moving with the dwarf, harrying him and smacking with her flail whenever she gets an opening. Her fur - lit for the second time in as many fights - finally goes out, leaving that unique scent in the air.

Whiteclaw

Got to love the smell of burning gnoll fur :D OK, I'll sort it out when I get the map up and let you know what happened and where you are.

EDITED to include the map and Whiteclaw's turn.

MAP - Round 4 Please note that Kobold 5 is dead and shouldn't still be there.

Whiteclaw ignores the subtleties of combat in her pursuit of the duergar. Licking her lips in anticipation, she steps up to the creature and lashes about her with her trusty flail. In her eagerness, the blow falls short and the duergar simply stares at her with undisguised contempt. Whiteclaw to P15. It was a tough call, but I reckoned she'd go straight to him rather than risk an OA from a kobold.

At Baldrech's menacing approach Kobold 1 drops his dagger and swiftly fires a sling bullet at the shifter. He cackles as the pellet buries itself in Baldrech's shoulder.

"Heee. Next time I go for the eyes, yes?" Then it darts away. Kobold 1 to S22.

Kobold 2 fires a sling bullet at Anarak wrecking further havoc on the fighter. It snickers at its own success and moves prudently out of range. "You mark me, now I mark you. My mark hurts." Kobold 2 to M22.

Kobold 3 hisses as it disentangles itself from the trees, emerges and aims at Vel once again before shifting back into the trees. The pellet misses, much to the kobold's discomfiture. Kobold 3 ends up at O7 having used a move and a shift.
