Request: "You are what you Eat".

Homebrew and House Rules

Idle wanderings of my mind have led me in a curious direction. I don't quite recall any class that drew magical power from consuming their enemies... So, fellow Paizonians, I humbly put forth this request.

Design a class that draws power from eating their enemies. Slime? Tastes just like jello! Dragon? Extra spicy! Human(oid)? Tastes like chicken! Beast? It is chicken! Vermin? Well, I'm a fun guy!

As a bonus, if this catches attention, how about a caster/melee split? After all, power is power, but how it is used is something entirely different. At the outset, I figure the powers could be split into types (subtypes may just be flavor, perhaps) with a D10 or D6 progression...

What do you say?

Hell yes, I'm game -- I have a long time fetish for a non-undead ghoul-type class...

..but I'm really really lazy.

Rather than 'caster/melee' - perhaps a class that is more akin to growing a monster. So, a mixutre of mundane and supernatural abilities gained from consuming enemies.

Ideas:

- Classic 'Eat the heart, become braver/stronger. Eat the eyes, become wiser, brain smarter etc - some kind of self buffing system based on organ consumption.

- Like eats like - devouring an enemy could grant the appearance for a time or, better yet, wearing their skin. Ooh, stretchy.

- Universal Took Kit. There's a lot you can make from the human body - rope from the intestines, daggers and clubs from various bones, pots and sacks from the skull and various organs. Not to mention how uesful skin is, both dry and wet.

- Hannibal Lecter versus Jeepers Creepers. You could have two paths/themes of powers, one which encourages the development of a creature/class that blends in seemlessly with it's prey while the other is the classic 'monster from the shadows' that lives in a secret lair/somewhere else and hunts it's prey when needed.

- Final Rest. Remember, any old chump can kill someone -- actively rendering someone into tiny chunks, disolving them in a bag of acid and then squeeeezzing out what's left is a sure sign that somebody wants you to stay dead.

Dark Archive

Necromancer's Legacy has a 10 level PrC called the Anam'Glac or something that derives power from feeding off of the remains of sentient foes. Each level grants another option, like using the skills, feats, attributes, etc. of the victim.

The Player's Guide to Clerics and Druids has a Druid PrC that does something similar, starting with a bite attack at low level and then gaining the options to give themselves bull's strength, etc. buffs by eating from a foe, which it can eventually even do during combat with a bite attack (either using the bite attack or while wild shaped and using whatever bite comes with that form). The Khetan Phagist, I believe was the name of that one.

Basing an Incarnum-style Totemist off of the consumption of critters you've killed could work as well.

"If you kill an enemy, make sure to eat his heart to gain his courage. His rich, tasty courage" *licks tongue*

It's a fun idea:

The Foeeater - Yet another reason why it sucks to be a vegetarian!

In regards to how the class' powers work, I'm thinking a return to the Barbarian of Beta, with each ritual consumption-- nothing elaborate, save maybe a prayer or some sort of invocation-- the class gets points equal to the CR of the creature being consumed.

I once heard someone talk about a style vegetarianism they employed.

"I won't eat it if it has eyes" That said, it looks like Treants are off limits.

Super genius deathmage has a feature like this. One of the options is to draw power from a ghoulish source which gives you bonuses for consuming your fallen enemies.

Not if they're awakened.

Grimlocks and purple worms are not! ;)

Warhammer fantasy's ogres have "Butchers", which are casters who use gastromancy. They eat their spell components and get different effects.

I would make this a transmutation class, Spend a full round action eating a fresh corpse (1 minute or less, longer with gentle repose), and turn into them via Beast shape, Plant shape, alter form, etc. 1 minute per hit die/ CR of the creature.
