What's the best way to prevent Ability Damage and Drain?

Advice

Is there a spell that stops it?

I've found spells for protecting from Negative Levels, Poison, Disease, etc. but so far I have not found and have not heard of one that stops ability damage and drain.

Not that I'm aware of...the Restoration line of spells will fix it, but not prevent it.

Becoming undead somehow will do it (mostly), though. You get immunity to ability drain and immunity to physical ability damage, in addition to other goodies. Also some baddies...not healing with positive energy isn't so hot unless your whole party is undead...

Sounds like an obvious idea for a new spell, then.

Piazo's policy on spells is to get rid of blanket immunities. That is why death ward got changed. That might also be why the fortification ability got changed.

Unless it's a VERY high level spell...not really as your gonna cause some issues with encounter balance is it's not.

Sovereign Court

3.5 Spell compendium has Sheltered Vitality, 4th level. You could also try to figure out how to become either a construct or undead as they're the only types not affected by ability damage or drain.

I for one agree with the no blanket immunity design theory.

No blanket immunities? Try telling that to an enchanter.

Thanks for all the help.

I'm actually the GM in my game, not a player. My players have just had a tough time on occasion with things like wraiths and lamia that drain and damage ability scores. I wanted to see if I could hint at or advise them on a different strategy.

I can only suggest boosting their saving throw modifiers with things like cloaks of resistance.

That and make sure they always have an ample supply of diamond dust for those restorations...for that matter, toss an extra wand of restoration or two into the treasure pile for them.
