House building....


Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion


So one of my pcs wants to build a house. How do I go about doing this? It has to be "cool" with escape tunnels, sliding walls, places to hide things.

I need a way to figure pricing and time needed to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I have all the 3.0 and 3.5 DnD books, plus the Pathfinder rule book. If the answer lies in any of these, please let me know.

Sort of. It has rules to build your "stronghold". One of the things you do, is determine it's size. In one of the charts it gives an example that "simple house" is 4 of these units of size. The chart's examples ranges from "cottage" being the smallest to "large dungeon" being the biggest. It's got everything you need to build a home of any size.

The 3.5 DMG has the price of houses on page 101 as well. The Stronghold builders guide is much cooler, but if he just wants to go generic look there.


the problem with the stronghold builders guide is the pricing. Prices are redonkulous and all over the shop. Wooden walls are either free (?) or 1000GP per room, and stone walls are much more expensive. even dirt walls will break your bank.

It's a good tool when making a stronghold, for sure, but the smaller you go, the worse it gets. Be wary.

This. I'd suggest pricing the building, then chop it down to 10% of the price the SBG suggests (magical effects excluded).

Alternatively, the Land and Home Guide by Dark Quest Games is available as a _dirt_cheap_ PDF on DriveThruRPG. Seriously, it's $1.50.


Mongoose's The Book of Strongholds & Dynasties is also very good for this. The pdf is more expensive, though, running $24.49 on DriveThruRPG. I picked it up in hardcover years ago and have been pleased with it. IIRC the rules for siege engines and such were silly, though.

And always remember the Lyre of Building for your serious building needs. It's amazing in the hands of a bard - it can pay for itself on a single big construction project by eliminating a lot of the labor costs. Probably not worth it for a small structure, unless you'd like to be able to put in secret doors/tunnels/safes without hired workers knowing where they are. (Or killing those workers after.) Serious munchkinism with this item also includes buying a custom magic item which improves perform(string instrument) skill checks, so that your chosen performer can keep playing until he fails an endurance roll and has to have a lie-down.

Oh, that's nothing. There's epic munkinism by taking the Tattooed Monk prestige class with the Wave tattoo so you can play the lyre 24/7 with no need to sleep or eat.
