So I'm getting a PSP 3000 in August. My first game is going to be Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. I love Castlevania SOTN on my PS and to be able to take it with whenever I go on long trips will be pretty sweet.
I'm curious ast to which accessories I should get and which games I should be on the lookout for. I'm really partial to side scrolling games and RPGs like the old NES Dragon Warrior, but aside from that I like just about every console genre.
Also, are there any UMD movies that really stand out?

Great choice - Dracula X is my favourite PSP game. If you have friends to play with, you should check out Monster Hunter (Freedom Unite is the latest version, available from the PSN). For side scrolling you should check out the Genesis Collection, Taito Collection and the Metal Slug Collection. The EA Collection is pretty sweet too - Syndicate, Desert Storm and Road Rash. Finally, I've really enjoyed the Final Fantasy re-issues. FFII, if you're into it, is awesome.
But then again, I'm a sucker for the "oldies". ;p As long as your expectations aren't too high, there is a lot of fun to be had with D&D Tactics. Star Wars Renegade Squadron is also a lot of fun.
Edit: Just got to add that you can get a lot of free demo games for your PSP. Make the most of this and you can save a fortune on games. Both because you will know if you like them before buying them, and because there are many hours of free gaming to be had. Dungeon Explorer has an ace free demo, with up to four players and more than one stage. Also, as a gamer, you'll probably get a good laugh out of the Undead Knights demo - make zombies out of people, use them as weapons etc. Also, get enough and make a bridge to cross the castle moat, lol!
There are a lot of good PSP games. However, the movie UMDs aren't all that great. They are very cheap, and the quality is top-notch, at least as good as a DVD, but it can be tough to squint at the screen for two hours. I'd say the episodes of something UMDs are the best value, then. Also cartoons are good as they're a little easier on the eye (Simpsons, Family Guy, Anime, etc.).
RE: Accessories, you should be okay with a sturdy case and a decent sized memory card (or two smaller ones). The battery goes for about 3 hours (depending on what you're doing - spinning the UMD eats it up fast, so if you're playing games from the disc or watching movies, you might want a spare battery or a car-charger or something.
Hope that helps! Hope you get as much out of your PSP as I do!
Peace,

Patapon and/or Patapon 2 are great. I'll second the Disgaea games, you can play those forever and still have a lot of fun. I loved delving into my items to make them and my characters more powerful.
There was another fun cheap game...Evil Overlord? I don't quite remember the name, it's by Nippon Ichi Software as well.
Pick up Final Fantasy Tactics; War of the Lions too.

This thing says "10 years in the making"... so I think that's good enough for me.

Plus check out Episode 2... Genesis looks cool! (Avariel type guy with black wings)
I was hoping someone here played it so I don't get swayed in the marketing hype, but hey... I think the damage is done and I think I will buy it... :)
Edit: Episode 3 shows a bunch of summons... they look awesome. I don't think this is turn-based like FF VII... but more like some kind of action-based button-masher hybrid...

PDK, sorry to be answering in another calendar year. I found Crisis Core great for the story and for the personalization of the characters. After FF7 I loathed Sephiroth. But in this game I can see him as a human being. We learn background on some of our people and the story of how it all began. Gameplay was decent, but the one problem I had was the level-up system. Basically, even though you accumulated xp, it takes a random roll to level up. I had one fight with a boss that leveled me 7 times, it had been so long since I'd leveled. The summons and other effects are decent. Also, combat can get a tad monotonous after a while. But it's very touching as you watch Zack try to reconcile his dreams and the harsh reality of SOLDIER. I still recommend it despite its flaws.

Thanks Lathiira. My wife just went out and brought me back a coffee... AND Crisis Core FFVII !!!!! :) :) :)
I like the game so far... don't really get the levelling system but hey, it sure is cinematic for a portable game.
Q: can you affect the result of the spinning reels by mashing buttons? I was repeatedly hitting the X button and one of the spinning reels was "trying" to flip I think... did I dream this up?
