This came up for discussion during character creation for our Kingmaker game.
The players guides says that a Mastodon is a regional choice for a druid.
Okay, so we look up animal companion stats for a Mastadon - Starts off Medium then gets Large at 7th level. Then we look up at the Beastiary entry: Size: Huge
So when an animal companion's size is smaller than the Beastiary entry, when does it get it's final growth spurt?
I realize that only a few animals even need this question. (Crocodile being the only other I can recall off the top of my head. Starts Small, goes Medium. Beastiary: Large)

Animal companions do not follow the same rules as normal ones...your's is a runt, a powerful runt maybe but a runt one the less. No animal companion I know of goes over large size, including the t-rex. May be a feat that allows it in the AGP but as it stands they do not grow any larger then large.
Because its hard to fit a Huge sized animal companion into a dungeon, that's why. Now of course if your GM feels it's ok, or that the rule is silly and your druid or ranger player is ok with a companion that might not always be able to fit everywhere its master goes, go for it, I say.
