Of the several games I am involved in, I only know of one wizard, in the PFSociety, who has a familar, and its a toad. Most wizards take arcane bond - particularly for the awesome recall a spell known ability.

My players thought the torbles were gross, even though I like them.

Scarab Sages

Not sure it counts, but I gave an NPC a torble familiar. He is a potion-maker (can't use the title alchemist anymore--thanks to the APG) who has a secret lab in the ruined part of the city. I think the familiar adds great flavor. I've always wanted more standard familiars that aren't representations of real-world critters (though those are great too).

Not yet. One of my players, a rogue who's planning to go sorceror at level 2, decided that the best way to deal with the torbles in the sewer was to feed them. I winged it a bit and ended up with one of them following the group around; this was inspired a little by the player describing the picture of the thing as "cute".
