Small concern over Faction Missions

GM Discussion

Silver Crusade 2/5

Maybe mine is more of an isolated case and not really much to worry about, but here it is anyway:

The group I'm running for decided they would all go for Taldor for their faction (which also prompted the lot of them chipping in for the purchase of a Taldor Sourcebook). All four of them work together to accomplish the faction mission in each of the scenarios I run for them, which I'm glad to see more teamwork with this particular group (considering the problems they were having awhile ago when we first started).

I can understand that the faction missions were designed for one or two PCs per faction to be present at each table; Not all four from a single faction. While a few have been a little challenging, I don't think they were designed with a team of four PCs working together on such missions.

Like I said, I might be worrying over something minor and insignificant here, as the idea is teamwork rather than 'free stuff'.

I can see where you are coming from. Some mission will be a lot easier to accomplish - but I don't think there is any simple solution. After all - punishing teamwork would be the last I would like to do as a GM.

And just to throw this in here - there is also the possibility of teamwork across factions. An example - I leave out the details to avoid spoilers.

I'm playing an Andoran Mage with pretty low strengths (7) - he tends to ask some more muscular members of the team to carry some of his stuff to keep low encumbrance. As background and for my craft check at the end of each game I have a profession scribe and craft calligraphy.

As it happened - the character carrying my stuff wanted to copy some runes or writing we found. Not even in possession of paper she did ask for help. My character - being helpful and in debt for carrying his stuff - offered not only paper - but also to copy the runes - using black ink with some red ink embellishments and his calligraphy skill of 10 (2 ranks, +5 intelligence, +3 class skill).

I'm not sure if a role of a dice was needed in the process (knowledge, linguistics, craft) - but if it was, then surely my character had superior chances to achieve the DC of the skill check.

I only realized ooc after having done the deed by the smug expression on the face of the player that I just accomplished her faction mission. And I felt it was brilliantly played (or I was just naive).

But it would be a shame if any ruling would have prevented my mage doing what he could do best helping the dwarven fighter.

This opens up a good question - how do you deal with faction missions involving a skill check where you use other players to a) have a second chance (perception mainly) or b) doing a job for you that can only be done once but having much better skills to achieve it.

In my view I would leave this to the GM. Missions will never be 100% fair or even. Something that might be simple and easy for my mage might be difficult for someone else.

To give another example, my own Cheliaxian sorcerer, in his own words, "Will be most happy to serve you in whatever way you might desire. I just might request a. . . favor or two in the future. Upon request, I'll even keep your secrets completely safe from certain parties I'm technically supposed to be reporting to, if the price is right."

(In practice, since wealth can't be shared it ends up being a bit of 'scratch my back, and I'll have yours scratched by whatever you want.')

It's not really a big deal if the entire group is the same faction. Their gear accumulation is limited by two statistics: prestige award and money. If they're max on PA, they still have the gold limitation to keep them on the wealth curve.
