If you have to trick someone into doing a job, they're going to be bad at it - why not just be honest?

I'm sorry it didnt work out, but i am glad you werent taken.

Yeah, NobodysWife had the same experience many years ago, and I agree -- why try to trick someone into being a telemarketer? They're not exactly going to love you for it.

But rest well knowing you made the world a slightly better place just by refusing the job. I'm sure we all wish more people would do so.

I hate those...

You are told that it will be help desk, only to learn that you are actually expected to sell crap to people.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Been there, resigned in the middle of the training even when the alternative was selling scrap metal scrounged from my cellar for food.

Ah, re-reading my quote it isn't nearly as funny when you try to add context: Impus Major's direct quote was, "Why are they all dry?", making the Depends comment far more apropos.

I don't do sales either, so the feeling's mutual about landing a sales job. Funnily enough the last time I had problems finding work my family was like "Take any job, including sales! Who knows, you might like it, and any job is better then being jobless on your resume!"

We are back from Lubbock. The electrical work on our house is finished but they can't turn the power back on until a city inspector comes and looks at it tomorrow sometime. So we're about to go check into hotel number two. I made WW stop in Weatherford Texas on the way home because Weatherford is the birthplace of Mary Martin, my favorite Broadway star. She was the first Maria in The Sound of Music and the first Nellie in South Pacific as well as the first Peter Pan.) There is a statue of her in her Peter Pan costume in front of the town library.

I have crossed from boredom to ennui, and I round towards acedia, heading fast at angst and then weltschmertz, with nihilism at the end of the tunnel.

Who says depression can't lead to progress? Of a sort... I learned new words that mean extensive versions of mental lethargy.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Weltschmertz is one of my favorite words.

It fits my mood right now.
We're in one of the crappiest motels in the western hemisphere.
It's not as bad as Ash Fork, Arizona, and it's not as bad as the hotel in Barton Fink, but it's close.
The whole place smells like the devil's armpit, the wallpaper is peeling off the walls, and when we tried to take the elevator up to our floor, it got stuck.
The cleaning lady, who was riding up with us, said, "Oh, this happens all the time. Just kick it. Right there." (She pointed to a spot near the floor to the right of the door.)
WW kicked the spot hard three times in a row and the doors opened.
The kids can't understand why I won't let them use the pool.

All I can say is, thank goodness it's only for one night.

They actually don't tax the citizens. They penalize the companies those people work for and the local government so those bodies will encourage those people in question to keep in the acceptable waistline.

My main complaint is I feel like they could use something better then waistline.

So private citizens aren't taxed instead taxes are taken straight from place of work. huh Why don't we do that. Its not like we don't do it anyways but we are our own middle man. instead of getting our w-2s and having to igther figure it out or pay a tax preparation service they would just automatically take care of it. Its not like we have the alternative of not paying taxes at least not without jail time. Then the IRS would probably have less issues trying to figure out and process all the custom mess that comes from hundreds of millions of peoples variations of preparing there own.

Adam explains it rather well -- the U.S. has a multi-billion dollar tax preparation industry that lobbies extremely hard against any tax reform that makes taxes less convoluted.

It's much like our health care system -- it's broken because being broken is more profitable to someone.

I really need to hurry up and conquer the world.

This is weird. I haven't been able to log on to the hotel internet for about 6 weeks, so I'd been using the network from the hotel next door. That makes it really unreliable and slow. So I thought to myself "I wonder what would happen if I used a live-USB of Ubuntu?" So here I am, using Ubuntu for the 3rd time ever, and I'm connected to the correct network. Now the real question is, if I switch back to Windows will I now magically be able to connect again? Or am I going to have to set the computer up to dual-boot Ubuntu and learn to live with two operating systems? And if I do that, which do I use as my primary?

Have you run Windows Update at all?

When Windows 10 first came out, it couldn't connect to my home wireless. It was a source of infinite amusement for me: "Oh, I see you're using Windows 10. No, my router refuses to connect to such garbage."

But it got patched about 8 months later, and now Windows 10 users aren't having issues any more.

Otherwise, we'll see whether Vanykrye sees any other obvious things once he's back.

Yeah I use Windows Update. In fact it just updated a couple of days ago. Doesn't seem to matter. I've had this computer for about 4 years (it came with 8.1 and I "upgraded" to 10) and never had any issues with it until now. Except for at my parent's house. There the wifi will sometimes connect and sometimes not, unless you reboot their router in which case it usually connects, but sometimes you have to reboot it a couple of times. But that happens with everyone's devices (doesn't matter if they are Windows, Apple, or Android), so that's likely a problem with their router rather than my computer.

I'm on my phone so I'll be brief.

Win 10 1809 has been fixed and rereleased. Yes, it deleted files, but only in a very specific way. You would have had to have redirected your Documents folder and still had to have files in the local folder anyway.

Let me say that again...you had to have gone through the effort of telling Windows that your Documents folder was located somewhere other than the default location, and you would still had to have saved files to that default location anyway. Those were the files that were getting deleted.

They decided to try to clean up those folders if there was a redirect in play, but failed to check if there were any files still there.

For Gran...it works in Linux but not in Windows points to a driver issue. If it's Win 10 then doing Windows Updates may solve it - they have been getting pretty good at getting the common driver's into those updates. If that still doesn't work, you'll need to try downloading new drivers.

I'll look into the drivers. Thanks.

Kinda surprised you've had suicidal depression before Vidmaster7 since you generally are a good natured, cheerful sort. Again I guess that brings us to the point that mental illness does not discriminate. Or maybe it's a phase we all go through, it's a matter of severity. I spent mine sobbing in the library in the toilet.

Good to know. At least if you think you have your life bad, people in year 536 had it worse.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It was in my high school years. I think a lot of it is just your body chemistry throwing you into a wreck combined with a really harsh family life, but I learned how to deal with it. I try to constantly give myself a goal to works towards and reward myself for doing so. I almost look at myself like a RPG character where I work towards a goal gain exp and then get better at trying to achieve that goal because of it. I also think the biggest reason I made it was because of my friends.

I was depressed because I had no friends and that was during university. And I wasn't doing well academically. My course had direct honors and I dropped out on year 3 - which means basically my grades weren't enough to proceed.

Life got more "fun" when I started looking for a job and realizing that the Job vacancies for my course weren't much unless you had super good grades(then one of those pharmaceutical companies would snap you up for research).
