Way of the Kirin and Rivalry's End

I have GM credit for Rivalry's End that I was about to apply to a character when I read the boon a little more closely.

You cannot benefit from both this boon and the Triumph of the Lantern Lodge boon.

Does this mean no single character can benefit from the same boon? Or does it mean that you can never have both boons on any of your characters?

You can't place both boons on the same character and receive any benefits. You can put one boon onto one character and the other on a completely different character and receive the benefit of each boon on the assigned characters.

Basically, yes. You had to be Lantern Lodge or Shadow Lodge to claim them, and those factions went away at the start of season 5.

I guess the question should be which boon are you trying to apply?

If it is the stat bump then you can't even receive that boon anymore. I think the Rivalry's End chronicle failed to include the deadline but it does have it on the Way of the Kirinn chronicle.

Either way, those factions no longer exist so you can't even earn the faction specific ones any more.

This rule was there so nobody could play Way of the Kirin with a Lantern Lodge character, gain the boon and get a free faction change to Shadow Lodge (still existing at that time), then play Rivalries End, gain the boon and change to one of the remaining 8 factions, gaining a total of +2 to an ability score. +1 was good enough.

And yes, that boon could only be gained before season 5.

This could be for a held GM credit and maybe allow some wiggle room. But I'm pretty sure even then the chance has passed.

GM credit would of had to been applied before the deadline. GM credit gets applied to the current character, and it can't be Lantern Lodge or Shadow Lodge to earn the boon.
