Will the Parhfinder Society events be in the events schedule, or is that something Paizo will be doing from the booth? My friend and I both wanted to play some Pathfinder Society games while we are there. My friend also wanted to run a few Pathfinder Society games. What do we need to do to get in on the Society stuff? Also, what do the volunteers do and how do you sign up?

If you do math online the way you calculate modifiers at the table, I'm not surprised it took you so long to realize what was going on. I'll be keeping the kidney, by the way.

1) The events will be on the schedule. You will need tickets for the game, they go quick, but tend to have a few tables for generics. Each year though it has less space than before for generics as far as I can tell, so try and count on buying the tickets for the event. They're cheaper than generics aways. Keep an eye on the boards and chances are that Josh will post the event numbers and thier times well before GenCon.
2) Josh said in other threads that he will be looking for Volunteer GMs next month. Being a Paizo GM is botha treat and a challenge. The more time you give of yourself, the more the amount of reward is. I don't have any details of what there will be this year. Last I volunteered to run 8 games and I got store credit, free game mats, the games I ran, a PFRPG Hardback, a free shared (with 3 other GMs) hotel room spot (but didn't use as I was booked into a room with my lovely wife).
3) if you aren't society members yet, well that is something that you can do today. It's free, and here are some links.
Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play (PFRPG) PDF
Please read the guide before you make your character so you get your faction right. And really take in all you can on the guide if you plan to run a Pathfinder Society game at GenCon. Players will really want to know that stuff.
Welcome to the Society!

They'll be in the events schedule in the second wave (which is due soonish). Once they're up, you'll be able to find them on gencon.com but I also keep a thread open in the Pathfinder Society boards about dates/times/tickets sold etc.
As for volunteers, I start ramping that up in March every year. Stay tuned.

After this line last year I can't imagine a scenario where Paizo wouldn't have a presence at GenCon. ;)
LOL haven't seen that one before. 37 seconds into it we buzz right over my head. :-)

If I want to volunteer GM And play some games, do I just get generics or pick a game I really want to play in? i.e. do we know what we might be GMing before ticket signup day? As a rookie GenCon GM, I want to be as flexible as possible for PFS.

Speaking as a Vet GM (never thought that I would use that phrase), when you sign up to GM Josh is more than likely lock you into a specific time slot and adventure. Expect him to want to know your availability in detail prior to him asigning GM slots. More than likely there will be a post close to the same time as to which games will be offered for play to the general public.
I will also just like to mention that if you make the commitment to GM, you really need to be there and be prepared to be there on time and ready to go well before the player muster. I could go deeper into this but just take my word if your one of the guys who takes a hotel spot and it turns out that you miss a slot for a reason other than your appendix burst chances are nothing will save you from the hounds of hell. I don't think that it's ever happend, but the rewards that get handed out to GMs, Josh really fights for, so it would be best that no one screws up a good thing.
If I where in your shoes, I'd buy the tickets for they games I want so you don't get closed out of the games you want. Really, The games keep getting cooler and you really don't want to miss out on some of them. Just make the commitment.
If it turns out the adventure is one that you want play, your going to need to find a DM who will run slot 0 of that senario, which is basically a table of GMs (or mixture of GMs and players) playing the game before they read it and run it. Check the Pathfinder Society boards closer to GenCon time and you chances are you will see a few of the GMs running slot 0 games on a Wednesday night or perhaps even in your neck of the woods to help out his fellow GMs or get ready for the Con.
When Josh asks for volunteers he will ask you for very the exact time you will be avaiable. Some people are available through the run, some only on Thursday and Friday, ect... Just be realistic with your time.
All in all, I shouldn't get ahead of my self. If you want to do this, and i have a good time everytime I do, consider realy digging into the PS Guide and really understand it. It helps, trust me.

I've played in the society games the last two years and I think this is my year to finally bite the bullet and try to join the ranks of the inglorious GMs. We'll see, and it's nice to hear that it's starting soon.
Question though: You've mentioned the new location of the OP area; I'm a bit confused on exactly where this is. Would it be fair to say you're describing an area clear on the other side of the convention center from where it's been the last few years?

Yes. We needed space with much higher ceilings to cut down on the noise issues we've had the last couple of years and the only way to stay in the convention center and get a room with higher ceilings was to move. However, part of our sponsorship package with Gen Con includes an enormous wall-mounted sign by registration near where our old rooms were that tells folks exactly where to find us this year.
As awesome as it was to be right outside the registration area, it'll be far more awesome to have a room with high ceilings where we can run HQ in the same room as the tables *and* only be about 50 feet from the Paizo booth.
Win.

My personal feelings are mixed about this. Being essentially 1-2 blocks further away from the central downtown area (hotels, food, etc.) isn't a positive change; however, I was one of the many who had commented on the volume in the old rooms, so I can appreciate immensely what the higher ceilings will mean.
Looks like I'll just plan on never going back to the Hilton this next year :-).

Not Hank Woon |
Yes, Josh, horse tranquilizers would do nicely, I think.
It only took three days for Mr. Vaughan (who bites his pillow when he sleeps) to stop calling me Hank Woon. Then he called me Lloyd (from Entourge on HBO).
Although to his credit on the last day (when everyone was running on fumes) I'm almost positive Mr. Vaughan never went to bed. So either the man is a machine/cyborg/laundry appliance from the future or Lou is that good a GM.

I feel you, Slanky. This was one of those decisions where no decision was going to be the perfect decision so I chose the space that had the least number of draw backs.
We'll see how it plays out. This is the last year before the expansion opens and I'm hoping we can get the ideal space we want once the expansion is opened.

Me doing some outstanding Customer service work at PFS HQ. The lass tried to use a level 2 pregen in a clearly labled tier 3-4 game. Also she failed to address Josh as 'M'lord'. The nerve of some people!

The Marriot might be a good choice for a hotel slightly nearer the new OP site.
We just booked our room at the Marriot Saturday afternoon. Only 1 block away from the convention center (and I'm assuming the new Paizo area) and not super expensive either. I'm super excited now! It sucks we've got to wait 6 months!

That's my first concern. If I volunteer my first priority will be as a GM and the duties. I'm not looking at an 8-slot type of committment, not because I don't like the benifits, but because this is my first time volunteering and I don't want to mess it up.
If it turns out the adventure is one that you want play, your going to need to find a DM who will run slot 0 of that senario, which is basically a table of GMs (or mixture of GMs and players) playing the game before they read it and run it.
Unfortunetly I can't do that. I need more time to prepare than one night. I'm not a veteran con DM who can pick up an adventure cold and do a decent job. I'm a rookie who want to be prepared and even bring the right minis and large maps if possible.
I'm also looking at the volunteering to cut my costs significantly, even if only for the 4-day pass. Can't afford what I could a few years ago.
Thanks for the insight.

If you end up being picked to GM at GenCon, what has been done in the past is a copy of the adventures being demoed are sent to you in advance so you have sufficient time to prepare.

This looks like it could be a load of fun!!
I definitely want to get on the list for GMing a game or two at the convention. I guess we can prep for this at Paizocon right?

Not sure if I'll becomfident enough in my GMing to volunteer in that capacity, but we'll see. I think normal GenCon monkey will suffice for me :)
It's not so differant than running a home game or game at a game shop, If you think you want to know if you can do it, buy one of the adventures try running a game at home. See if you can keep it running in the 5 hour time frame. (It's much easier than you think) The book keeping at the end isn't really that hard (At GenCon and the reporting is handled by Paizo HQ.) All the GMs I had the pleasure to work with were friendly and helpful. In some cases if I finished up with my table, I would go and help another table, by looking up rules, spells ect.
The hardest part is working over the noise with your voice, and as I'm sure that you have read above, the new room should be eaiser to work in.
But if you don't become a GM, that's fine too. I've been running more and more Pathfinder Society at my home games and the folks at my table love them. Maybe it's their short attention spans or they just like intense bite size adventures, the format works well with the kind of group that we have. The writing on these games have been really good and really help flesh out Glorion just as much as the full adventure paths do. I'm sure that the games as this GenCon are going to rock.
But as I mentioned before, seriously consider running some Pathfinder Society games at home. I think that you would be suprized how well they could make you a better GM. Hope to see you folks at the Con.

The Marriot might be a good choice for a hotel slightly nearer the new OP site.
My standard Gen Con adventuring party gets two suites. Unfortunately the only place we've found to do that with any chance to obtain the room is to go for Embassy or Hilton. Hilton's a half a block further but we don't have to deal with "the stair climb of death" and we get queen beds.
Small prices to pay sometimes. It just means I get a little more exercise.

Joshua J. Frost |

See if you can keep it running in the 5 hour time frame.
Keep in mind that we went to 5-hour slots at Gen Con to give extra time for paperwork and introductions, not extra GM time for running the scenario. If everyone uses the full 5 hours the transition from the morning slot to the afternoon slot is going to be ... messy.
Assume that you have 4 hours to finish the scenario.

Outstanding! The higher ceilings alone make this the right decision, but adjacent to the Paizo booth!? Now we can't be flanked!
