Jorgen would know that such runes can be cut or damaged to destroy their effects as they are made/carved.

Freki and one of the others staggers over and drags the ship master Taggrik away from the large rune of the decking. Everyone awake on board at the time hears a muttered curse from nowhere. Although most of the party are on the beach and most of the crew is already asleep.

"Die or leave!"

Is anyone else going to help Kurn and Anya? Anya can I have a heal check for all that good work take a +2 bonus.

Blood begins to spurt from the leg, blood mixed with a much darker and thicker fluid like a tar. The blood that flies out congeals quickly onto the checks and forehead of Kurn as he works. Meanwhile Anya holds Drago down with all her weakened strength but that strength may not be enough... Drago Longaxe is a very powerful man in his prime until poisoned.

Nearby the fire is blazing high and a torch waits to char the inevitable stump.

Ragnar will brace the other leg against any struggling on Drago's part.

You of course call the shots DM, but technically Anya wouldn't have let Kurn start until there were enough people holding Drago down. She knows how big and strong he is...she been watching ; )

Male Human Druid 2

Sorry. I was stuck on an airplane on the Tarmac for 12 hours yesterday

Stefnir also helps hold the stricken man down, and offers some advice as Kurn begins the cut.

Heal Check (1d20+8=10)

Whoops! Stefnir almost cut off the wrong leg

Male Half-Elf Cleric 2

FW - As per my last post, I'm way past the leg removal phase!

Kurn gets back on board the ship and notices Jorgen saying something and pointing at the rune. "What's going on?"

Male Half-Elf Rogue 2

Ari will also help to hold down Drago

Kurn Thornsson wrote:

Unfortunately for Kurn this is a major operation not handled by one man or in one post. His first heal check is sufficient to realise a few things though.

Kurn can see that Drago does need holding down and the leg will require some strength to saw or hack off with an axe or the like. Anya's idea of the dagger pommel is a good one since Drago starts to fight like a wild thing when the first incision is made.

Ragnar is flung off in his fatigue he just cannot hold on. He needs a much better grip or to nail that leg down.

Everyone is suffering from fatigue, even those with the endurance feat. That feat allowed them to row better and further but the results is that the party is heading towards exhaustion.

Ari grabs one arm and tries to hold on too. Strength check please.

Stefnir aids Kurn as best he can providing advice and brute strength where he can. That's an aid another check for the coming main roll.

Male Human Barbarian (Sea Reaver) 2 HP 22/23, NLD 0; AC 16, FF 14, T 12; Fort +5, Ref +2, Will +1; Init +4, Perc +6

Ragnar snarls a curse and grabs the leg again.

Female Half-Elf Bard 2/Ranger 2

Helga will throw her weight into the fray to help hold down the captain, and waves away the brand - she will use a cure spell to staunch the wound.

Strength check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10 with fatigue.

Male Half-Elf Rogue 2

Ari uses all his strength to hold Drago down

Strength Test 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Though, will all that has gone on, even he is tiring.

-2 on strength and dexterity for fatigue.

The Exchange

Drago's leg looks like a ragged piece of meat all hacked flesh and black gore. Kurn's arm is covered in a mixture of the blood and dark tarry poison.

Ragnar, Ari, Helga and Anya manage to hold the captain down, despite his vicious efforts. The strength needed is almost inhuman, its like he is fighting for his life but against everyone. Then he manages to bite through the leathers on Anya's dagger pommel and his teeth start grinding away at the wooden centre.

Now Kurn needs to either saw or cut Drago's thigh bone. Good luck. He gets +8 to his heal check from the success of the various party members and the DC is 20. Good luck.

Male Human (Kreig) Inquisitor 2

Seeing the others at their grisly work, Jorgen hops back aboard the ship going over to the rune. Drawing out his dagger he carves a line across the rune, ruining it.

That includes +7 for heal and +8 from FW

Nice rolling Kurn!

The Exchange

Kurn cuts grooves around the thick thigh bone and it snaps like a twig thanks to his careful preparations with a quick tap of a small axe. Drago grunts behind the dagger and blood trickles from his mouth but he slumps finally weakened and unconscious from his fight.

As Kurn turns to the torch he realises that the stump needs sewing up properly not cauterizing and sets about with a will, leaving a couple of small dripping holes to allow the poisonous humours and other foulness a means of escape. The stump will take weeks to heal, even in the best of care and conditions.

Drago probably needs a channel or two too?

Slumping over the body, everyone who took part has just gone past their limits in a shared moment of real humanity.

Ari, Stefnir, Helga, Ragnar and Anya are fast heading towards exhaustion if they don't rest. Kurn is fatigued now.

Only when this task is done does she take out her new fur blanket and pass out by the fire, her spear still gripped tightly in her hand.

Ignoring what is going on with Drago, Saorise spends her time with Jorgen and the Runes.
"So what do you think is causing them," she asks Jorgen. "Is it one of the crew, a possible stowaway or do you think that the ship really is haunted?"

FW - Can I now assume that Kurn has finished "operating" and can now get back on the ship where he belongs?!

Kurn will ensure that Drago's wound is properly dressed and then go back to the ship, where he will try and get some rest finally.

The Exchange

Yes and no Kurn, he needs long term care for a week or more (but not constant attention), since the poison may not be totally eradicated for instance. Healing him does start the process of making the stump less painful and tender. Leaving him straight after the operation is up to you.

Female Human (Krieglander) Frost Sorceress 2

Looking disturbed by the news that the attacker is someone onboard the ship, she motions towards the now defaced Runes.
"So what do you think, should we simply go through everyone's belongings looking for the necessary tools, or maybe set a trap for them?" she asks Jorgen quietly. "It could very well be anyone and I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it's that bastard Priest of Krakis."

Since Stefnir fell out of the rowing very early, and rested, is he not a bit rested? At least enough to care for the patient till Kurn recovers a bit?

"I'm going back to the ship" says Kurn to all those in ear shot."I've wasted enough time on this" he says pointing to Drago."If we don't stop the runes, we'll probably lose the ship and then we're stuck!"

Kurn then moves back toward the ship.

"I don't think it's him. I don't like or trust him too much, but it doesn't make sense, and I'm pretty good at taking a person's measure, but of course you know that," Jorgen says quietly with a grin.

"If somebody's doing this they're likely to hide the tools, but I'd look around for indications of magic while most people are resting. Might turn up something they missed."

Looking around for someone to volunteer for watch Anya hears Kurn as he makes his comments before heading back to the ship and the Barbarian nearly flies into a fit of rage. She does in fact ball her large hands into fists and takes several steps towards the priest and for a few moments all she can see is the image of Kurn's nose splattering against his face.

'That pig! I'll Kill him! That he would Dare toss the taking of this mighty warriors leg off as a 'Waste of his Time'! The arrogant, @%@$5 son of a @%@*^! and with every thought she only gets angrier and stalks closer to her prey.

But then, she suddenly remembers that without Kurn, it is very likely that Drago would be dead rather than alive minus one leg. And although this does in no way eliminate her fury, it does diminish it enough for her to be able to allow the priest to head back to the ship unmolested.

Not knowing or caring if the man knew or not how close his comments had brought him to death, (Spot or Sense Motive DC11) and her anger exhausting her even more, Anya slumps down by the fire. She will do everything in her power to stay awake until someone else volunteers for the watch, however, after some time, sleep takes over even her steely determination.

Anyone can stay up with Drago, but he doesn't need constant attention, just periodic attention. Anyone who manned an oar and fluffed a dice roll was automatically tired, the rolls indicated rowing for about an hour and Stefnir gave his all in that time. If he rested after that for several hours then he is back to normal but I thought he stayed up like everyone else throughout the whole night dealing with the various problems and issues I thrust on the party. That made him officially fatigued like everyone bar Kurn, rowing and no sleep takes it out of you.
Since then some people went to sleep (like Taggrik who was exhausted) but most of the party have been dealing with Drago and the runes. I know Stefnir tried to sleep but I thought he then helped the others operate on Drago instead? If I have got all this wrong then I am happy to hear where I have mucked up.

"I'll try and cautiously watch people for signs of magic use," Saorise whispers back. "It won't make me any friends if I'm caught, but I think that ship sailed around the same time this one did, no." She gives a smirk with the last statement. "Not that I care what anyone else thinks mind you."
"You should probably get some rest first though. I don't want you dropping dead of exhaustion with that bastard cleric around. I don't think I can take him on my own if he tries something." She glances towards the shore. "and speak of the devil, it looks like he's coming back on board."

Male Human (Kreig) Inquisitor 2

Jorgen looks at Saorise, realizing in amusement that arguing with her is pointless.

"All right, I'll rest, but if he does anything, I mean anything wake me before you try anything."

Male Half-Elf Cleric 2

Kurn climbs back on board and clocks where the evil witch and her lap dog are before moving toward the tiller. However, realising that there are more important things going on than arguing with the witch he asks "what has been going on? That rune thing seems to be growing, so do you have any idea about how to stop it? If we can't stop it, we'll have to abandon the ship here and burn it."

Thinking about the safety of the crew "all of you leave the ship until this matter is resolved, except you two please". Kurn nods at Saorise and Jorgen as he shouts at the crew. "Quickly now! Everybody on to the beach. Take all the food, drink and weapons you can carry"

Male Half-Elf Cleric 2

I'm not around until Sunday night after this evening, so here is what Kurn intends to do please FW.

He wants to save the ship as it's our main method of transport and he's a seafarer after all!

He wants to evacuate the crew with all the food etc they can carry while he, Saorise and Jorgen try and sort out the rune.

If the rune can't be stopped Kurn will ensure that Saorise and Jorgen get off and then burn the ship to try and stop the runes apparent evil. He will hopefully then jump off and get back to the beach in theory.

FW - Run my character if you really need to, but I would prefer that he's left until Sunday night if possible please

Thanks

Everyone is asleep apart from Kurn, Jorgen and Saorise. Deeply asleep thanks to all their exertions and they do not hear his call.

Male Human (Kreig) Inquisitor 2

"That won't be necessary. I've disabled the rune, but since it seems that they're moving there might be more. Saorise is the most rested of us so she'll keep a watch with and eye toward magical activity while I rest in case we need to fight something later. I'd suggest resting, since I have a feeling when we find the source of all this it'll get ugly fast."

Male Half-Elf Cleric 2

Kurn realises that the crew is asleep "I give up trying to help these people" he mutters. He then looks at Jorgen "well done for destroying the rune and you're right about getting some rest". Kurn curls up next to the tiller and sleeps, hoping that he will wake up, as he's surrounded by enemies.

The Exchange

That leaves Saorise on watch, and although she has done anything since the ice cave, no rowing or taking part in medical emergencies, she hasn't slept either. Time passes slowly, no one wakes and the sun begins to warm the cove, the waterfall makes gentle music as it pours over into the sea. The ship rocks a little despite being shelved on the pebbly undersea beach.

Drowsy and alone as the dawn turns into full morning, Saorise feels a shadow come over her, it is Taggrik. He is grey and red eyed but has had about four hours sleep.

"I need to find Drago. Where is he?" The ship master starts looking around and notices the beach and its sleeping bodies.

Saorise looks up at Taggrik through bleary eyes. Those eyes narrow as she takes in his demeanour and insistence.
"I believe he was taken ashore to rest and get away from the ship's corrupting influence. I would suggest that you do the same as it is not entirely safe on board at the moment. The three of us have thing in hand here. You should get some rest, you've had a trying time the past few days." She indicates the shore with her head and turns slightly to indicate that the conversation is at an end while still keeping Taggrik in her peripheral vision as her sixth sense is telling her something isn't quite right.
