I *LOVED* Band of Brothers. I am also what many people would consider to be a pinko commie s.o.b. The role of the racist, imperialist power structures involved in waging war can't be ignored, but man that was a good mini-series! :)

Anyone might think the Republians undermined the US Economy to enslave its lower classes and force them into a military service economy…that would be evil. - Yes I am enjoying Band of Brothers Also- Totally brutal Gorefest. Last week they got shelled (guys lost their limbs to artillery in some forest in Belgium).

Remember that the Military-industrial complex didn't exist before WW2 and neither did mass consumerism and the exploitation of foreign workers by US corporations.
Our political leaders might have made it inevitable that the US would go to war by providing our allies with weapons to fight their wars but the US was attacked. We didn't go to war to secure some type of natural resource, and we didn't go to war to make a profit we went to war to bring down the Nazi and Japanese empires with no other motives. The conspiracy theorist version of history that Roosevelt knew of the Japanese message declaring war was deliberately ignored is pointless because the Japanese would have attacked at the same time whether we knew or not and that time was when most of the US navy was in port and a 30 minute warning would have done the pacific fleet no good.

Americans in World War II...Its what they do with MASH in Australia They glorify heroes as guys who go off and kill (and be killed) in wars for the profit of despots back at home.
Yeah, I was going to say that this describes the Iraq War quite well, maybe the Gulf War (sort of) and a case could be made for Vietnam and WWI (although in both those cases it was more for geopolitical ends than actual monetary profit), but this isn't a very good description of WWII.
Particularly in regards to BAND OF BROTHERS I, since the United States Senate was divided on declaring war on Germany (a strong faction was against it, urging Roosevelt to concentrate all resources on Japan) until Hitler took the decision out of their hands by declaring war on the USA and ordering German U-boats to begin sinking all US ships encountered in the Atlantic. At that point, the USA's massive retaliation was inevitable.
In addition, as well as Pearl Harbour, US ground, air and naval forces in and around the Philippines (then a US protectorate) were also attacked on the same day, with the urgent Japanese need for the Philippines' natural resources actually being the impetus to attack Pearl Harbour. Since the USA would declare war anyway when its forces came under attack in the Philippines, Japan figured nothing was lost trying to knock out the Pacific Fleet at the same time, which obviously didn't work out because the American carriers were all missing at the time of the attack. Because of this, Pearl Harbour was actually a failure for the Japanese, as the Americans were able to strike back months more quickly than they had hoped for.
