Abbrathil:
You spot what appears to be the scattered bones of human remains lying underneath one of the horses.

Hennon - unfortunately yes, you still have a sprained ankle.

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1

I figured. Just double checking.

Abbrathil's voice pipes up as Raven slowly advances on the brutal scene, Oriole, while you're progressively narrowing the distance between you and the foreboding pile of gore, be sure to mind that human corpse comingled with the equine remains. I am assuming it is human, of course. It is entirely within the realm of reason that the pelvis and femur protruding from the fleshy mess once belonged to an elf or half-elf or other humanoid creature, but such sundry details hardly bear any weight on our current circumstance.

As he is speaking, Abbrathil gradually positions himself so that he is between Hennon and Ifrit. Safety in numbers and what not.

Male Human Ranger 1

Raven stands up and looks straight down to find a skeletal arm with hand still attached.

This... these bones... they are quite aged. Their former host did not perish with the animals.

He squats back down again to examine them.

Heal: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

These remains are probably more than a decade old. Either they were already laying out here and our unfortunate beasts of burden fell upon them as they died, or, it was one of the attackers.

Raven grabs hold of the horse carcass at the rear legs and then begins to attempt to pull the creature off of the skeletal remains.

Strength: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

With some struggled effort, Raven is able to pull the corpse off of the skeleton. It's hands end in sharp, bony claws, and it's skeletal frame is still quite in tact despite its age. Stuffed into it's busted ribcage are the horse's saddlebags.

What do we have here? Raven picks up the bags and rifles through them quickly, turning them upside down to reveal their emptiness. Bah.

The man stands back up and approaches the ajar door within the archway of the crypt.

Let us proceed then. Hennon, stay at my back. I may need your axe if we get into trouble. With that, Raven grabs hold of the ajar door and pulls it wide, stepping inside.

As the heavy door swings open, the faint light from outside reveals a long chamber with risen platforms on either side. A faded painting of Kassen is on the far wall. The room appears to be the site of a gruesome battle, with two bodies piled in the center and a number of skeletons scattered around. An echoing wail can be heard somewhere in the distance, beyond this foul chamber.

Female Half-elf Summoner 1

Sarenae pauses as she steps in behind Ifrit.

What...was that? She leans forward and turns her head to listen in again but hears nothing.

Look, more bodies. What has happened here?

Male Human Ranger 1

Raven just shakes his head in disbelief and then slides his pack down his arm in order to pull out a torch and light it.

Dark in here... anyone else have a light? As he says this, he reaches his left arm out holding the torch into the room and then steps in towards the bodies, checking the corners of the room as he enters.

He stops midway between the entrance and the bodies near the center.

Looks like their gear. Raven twists his body to the left moving the torch light over a set of three packs lying on the stone floor. One of them appears to be full, while the other two lie flat.

Someone search that pack. I'm going to check for doors. Raven carefully walks over to the bodies, stepping over a skeleton as he steps up a few of the stairs leading up to a foot-high platform. As the torchlight follows him, a door appears in the dancing light on the left. He walks up to it and quickly scans it, but then turns around and maneuvers over the bodies to reach the other side where another door is revealed on the opposite side to the right.

Well, there are two ways out-- Before Raven is able to finish, another piercing wail is heard that echoes from the southern side of the room which is located to your left.

Abbrathil tentatively enters, having once more retreated to the back of the group. As they enter the room and survey their surroundings, Abbrathil begins to become curious with regard to all these skeletons in such preserved condition.

I take it none of you were expecting this either, then? Blast that Uptal and his melodramtic posturing turned prophecy! The gnome's high pitched voice echoes eerily in the dark chamber, but the small figure doesn't seem to care as his eyes take on the telltale glaze of spellcasting.

Abbrathil casts detect undead

Abbrathil will sweep his focus around the room and out to the horses and skeleton at the entrance as well. Focusing for as long as the spell allows.

Abbrathil speaks a few arcane words as he waves his right hand around as he stares straight ahead into the room, and then slowly begins to look around. His right hand outstretched slightly, he looks down to the mixture of skeletal and human remains in the center of the room.

Abbrathil:
You first detect the presence of undead auras as you are facing into the room. You pause and concentrate for a few more moments until you detect six auras. As you look at the ground where the skeletal remains lie, you see eight skeletons and two human corpses.

Everyone can make a Knowledge (Local) check even if you don't have the skill. If you don't have it, just roll a d20 with no modifiers.

Keeper:
What about the horses and corpse back outside? And how strong is the aura? Is it faint, as if undead had previously been present or is it stronger than faint, indicating 6 of the corpses before us are undead?

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1

Knowledge (Local): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

Hennon grabs the pack on the floor that appears to contain something and turns it upside down about a foot from the floor and shakes out the contents, ceasing immediately as the wail from beyond the southern door wends its way into the room. He straightens and grips Chopper tightly with both hands. H-h-hennon not for liking g-ghosts.

Abbrathil:
You do not detect any undead auras outside. As you continue your detection, you quickly narrow down that the six auras are directly in front of you... just as the six begin to rise...

Hennon:
Hennon, you recognize the two human corpses to be Gerol and Vark, two residents of Kassen and friends of the Mayor.

Suddenly, from amid the carnage, six skeletons rise up, each wielding a rusted or broken scimitar. Their heads snap forward as they supernaturally sense that there are intruders to the crypt. They rise up their weapons and ready their attack.

When Abbrathil's turn comes up (which is likely going to be at the bottom of the stack) he'll do the following...

2 or more skeletons remain a threat:
You undead abominations are long overdue in meeting Pharasma! You! Abbrathil points authoritatively at the nearest skeleton Send one of your brethren to meet her!

Abbrathil will use one of his channel energies to command the undead skeleton.
All undead within 30 ft must make a Will Save DC 16.
As he is only level one, he is able to control 2 HD of undead.
The first 2 undead to fail the save, Abbrathil will direct to attack another skeleton (preferably one that is giving one of his allies a rough time)
If only 2 remain and they both fail, they will attack each other.

1 skeleton remains a threat:
You are long overdue in meeting Pharasma, you abominable mockery of life! Meet her now and pray she is merciful!

Abbrathil will then cast disrupt undead.

Hennon's DEX is currently a 13, which I forgot to factor in, so his initiative is actually 20.

Raven: 1d20 + 3; (16) + 3 = 19
Abbrathil: 1d20 + 2; (6) + 2 = 8

Three of the skeleton's attentions are averted to the human man standing part of the way up the stairs to their left, while the other three quickly move in to engage the gnome and the eidolon. Each of them thrust or slash their aged scimitars at their foe.

Skeleton 2 (attacking Abbrathil): 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10

Skeleton confirm on Raven: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1

Abbrathil takes advantage of the pillar adjacent to him and dodges behind it as one of the scimitars come crashing down to where his head formerly was. As the other skeleton directly in front of him approaches, thrusting the scimitar at his gut, the gnome completely ducks as it bareky passes overhead, grazing his hair.

Another skeleton lumbers straight toward Ifrit, and the creature attempts to dodge the sideways swipe, however the blade creates a gash in the eidolon's shoulder.

Three undead engage Raven, one of them swinging sideways at his gut, however he jumps back causing the swing to go wide. The other two, however step up and simultaneously swing their scimitars downward catching the ranger in between his studded leather and slicing down his torso.

Male Eidolon Quadruped

Ifrit growls menacingly after recovering from his failed dodge as he rears up and swipes at the skeleton with both claws.

Ifrit (Attacking Skeleton 5): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

While the creature is able to successfully strike the skeletons, Ifrit's claws do not seem to be enough to cause any significant damage. Ifrit roars at the skeleton and then resumes back to a defensive stance anticipating it's next attack.

Female Half-elf Summoner 1

Sarenae stays put and fishes out a piece of cured leather as she waves her right hand and speaks an arcane word, "magarmae." Soon a shimmering wave of translucent blue energy washes over her and then fades invisible. With that, she reaches behind her back with her left hand and removes her quarterstaff from it's leather latch.

Hennon's turn

Male Half-Orc Fighter 1

Free Action: 5 foot step to E13
Full Round Action: Full Attack

  • Attack One (against Skeleton 2):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23 Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
  • Attack Two (against Skeleton 3): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Hennon leaps up beside Abbrathil as the skeletons emerge and begin to assault his companions. As he does, he sweeps his double ax across at the skeletons immediately in front of he and Abbrathil, directing one ax head at each skeleton.

Sorry guys I don't know what happened to the link. I didn't realize it was broken. Here's the battlemat: Battlemat

That will probably change things for you, Hennon, so I'll just have you attack the skelington (ha ha ha) in front of Ifrit and to the right of Abbrathil.

Hennon swings his axe mightily at the skeleton to the left of Abbrathil, and as he does so, the axe slices into the skeletons head sending shards of bone across the room. The skeleton however returns its head forward and readies another attack.

On his second attack, Hennon swings awkwardly at the skeleton in front of Ifrit, however in making sure he does not accidentally hit his companions, he is unable to strike true.

Male Human Ranger 1

Shaking off the wounds he just sustained from the skeleton's scimitars, Raven backs up along the wall (5 ft. step) towards the northern door and swings his short sword at the skeleton in front of him.

Attack roll vs. Skeleton 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Confirmation: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Raven strikes the skeleton's ribcage, however the weapon seems to be unable to cause any significant damage. He places his back up against the wall and prepares to get into a defensive stance.

Abbrathil will perform the action he stated previously, amended with a 5ft step to D13. Believing that Ifrit and Hennon can hold their own, Abbrathil will instruct any skeletons that fall under his command to attack one of the skeletons surrounding Raven.

Abbrathil sidesteps to the left, putting a pillar in between himself and the skeleton which was in front of him. He then raises his hand into the air and speaks several arcane words as a slightly visible pulse fires out from his hand.

Skeleton 1 will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Skeleton 2 will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Skeleton 4 will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Skeleton 5 will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Skeleton 6 will save: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17

The skeletons engaging Abbrathil and Raven both relax suddenly. Their heads snap towards the gnome's direction. Abbrathil focuses in on them and commands them to attack the two skeletons towards the back of the room, directing them to guard Raven. The two undead quickly comply and then turn to engage the two at the back of the room.

The one next to Raven spins around and then moves across the steps to attack the nearest enemy skeleton.

Skeleton 1 attacks Skeleton 4 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

The blade clangs off the enemy skeleton's weapon as the undead senses something amiss and keeps his guard up.

The skeleton across from Abbrathil likewise moves in to attack as well.

Skeleton 2 attacks Skeleton 4 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

The skeleton is also on guard against another attack, and so it deflects the second blade away with a return swing from the first.

The two under Abbrathil's control are marked with a white halo.

****Battlemat****

Male Eidolon Quadruped

Ifrit snarls and rears up once again on his hind legs in order to gain leverage on his attack. He simultaneously swipes both claws down at the skeleton.

Ifrit attack Skeleton 5 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 ; 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 ; 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Rend: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Again, the skeleton's hard bones withstand even the powerful claws of the eidolon, and Ifrit snorts frustratingly as he backs down from his attack.

Female Half-elf Summoner 1

Sarenae steps to the right and swings her quarterstaff underhandedly up toward the right side of the skeleton's ribcage, and then follows through with a downward stroke to the right collarbone.

Attack vs. Skeleton 5: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1 ; 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (10) + 0 = 10

Unfortunately she misses as the skeleton dodges her quarterstaff and then raises its scimitar up, preparing to strike.

I forgot to have the skelingtons attack.

The undead standing before Ifrit is drawn to Hennon as the great half-orc swung and missed with his axe. The skeleton takes a swipe at him with its scimitar:

Skeleton 5 vs. Hennon: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6 ;

The skeleton completely misses as Hennon barely has to lean back to dodge the attack.

Skeleton 4 attacks skeleton 2 after its failed swing:

Skeleton 4 vs. Skeleton 2: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (13) + 0 = 13

Skeleton 2 returns it scimitar to clash once again with the other skeleton as the two remain locked in swordplay.

Skeleton 6 attacks Skeleton 1 with a thrust of its blade:

Skeleton 6 vs. Skeleton 1: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (20) + 0 = 20
Confirm: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6

The blade glances off the skeleton's ribcage, sending a bone shard against the wall behind it.
