I think this is what sets the deluxe sheets apart from the basic ones. It may be beneficial to have a single page sheet that is specifically for recording what happens during a sessions. When the page is full print another and keep the old one as notes. There could be a spot for session date, who it relates to, what happened, check boxes for level of importance, etc.
For a session, I'm most interested in:
Which PCs were there
Where we were
Who we met
What our goal/quest/job was
What did we accomplish
Who did we have conflict with
What did we gain
What was the climax/end of sessionKeeping track of where you were and what you did on a session-by-session level is the key to the character's history.
Thank you for your response. I apologize for the delay, it didn't come up on my RSS Feed for some reason. This is good to know, and I will do my best to impliment this in a format that is both useful and efficient. Any one else have any ideas or comments on the page lists?

Sorry to say but there are so many decent free character sheet options out there (online: dndsheets.net and offline: multiple very nice excel sheets) for people who like character sheets that I just don't know how many people would pay for one. Who knows, I could be very wrong though.
As for my opinion (as if anyone cares lol) I have always WANTED to like a character sheet, preferably one that did all the math for me etc, but I have often gone through the effort of filling in all of the blanks and then decided later I just couldn't remember where anything was. All the boxes and lines and black borders and filling around areas distracts me so I end up just penciling the character sheet out on a piece of note paper. It has only what I need and I usually know where everything is, not to mention its infinitely customizable. That's just me though :)
Besides, PCGen (and other tools) can spit out sheets in multiple formats and colors and orientations etc. Why would I pay for something when I can use PCGen or Redblade?
What about a control page instead of typing in the numbers directly on the page? Fill isout like a questioneer and it populates your boxes. Making it less frustrating for experienced players and easier for ne players. It's not software, but it would do mostly what you are asking for (as far as a PDF can).

This goes out to all the poeple that have given me a specific section they have brought up. I would like to know if any of you want to see how the design turns out in the "alpha" stage of this and give feedback. I would send you a .jpg of the section as they come along. If you are interested in this, or have feedback on a section, please post... thanks for everyones help!

As a GM, I'd love a page with 4 to 8 Monster/NPC blocks, self calculating, so I can put the PC's most relevant stats there, the enemies, the NPC's and cohorts, and have them ready to go. Then I could print them out on card stock and cut them up and put them in a box to use as needed.
A friend just asked me to design this for him before our next game, so I'll probably have this done in the next couple weeks (which is hopefully our next game session). Would you like to help playtest these as they develop?

Falsehealer (and anyone else who has a response):
With a landscape page, it it better...
...to pack in information with many useful features, but a sheet that takes a couple sessions to get used to?
...to keep it lighter and reduce the content in exchange for a simpler ready to go sheet?
Is there any other thing that landscape sheets have that you find invaluable besides the redistribution of information into a shorter and wider format? What is your opinion?

The sheet doesn't intrude into the middle of the gaming table so much, and for some reason I find landscape sheets to be much easier to navigate.
Also, it just looks better.

So noted! :D I was thinking it also works better on most laptops, as laptops are widescreen (I have my laptop on my lap with my character sheet, trying to maximaze table space for rolling and miniatures).

I like all types of landscape designs for the most part, if it takes a session or 2 to get used to that is fine. Mostly I would love to see a landscape design on 8.5 X 14 legal paper as most tend to stick with the 8.5 X 11. I really feel that legal paper is going to really make landscape sheets work well.

Still looking for more advice and more playtester. All feedback is welcome! :D
A second question for playtesters... would you like to submit a character to be listed as the sample for the sheets? It will haave to be first come first serve, but the catagories will be:
The characters would be used to highlight optimal use of the sheets. Also, all playtester will be listed on the credits page (unless they wish to remain anonymous). If you wish to be a character example writer for one of these sections, list which one in a post. Thanks!
EDIT: I'm looking for a total of 22 playtester by the time this is done. Just to throw that number out there.

The initital emails for box style vs solid style have beens sent out. I figured I'd put my opinion here and let anyone else voice theirs as well. Solid style grouping or boxes style grouping?
Style Choices:
My personal opinion:
I've always been partial to the solid type, since it looks aesthetically pleasing to me. Also, I find that I end up doodling between the boxes of the box type anyway.
*EDIT* Second question: How much abbreviation is okay?
Some pages include STR and below it strength. At other points on the page it uses the STR abbreviation because the primary definitions are already defined. Is this okay? Can less or more abbreviating be done reasonably? Thanks!

The initital emails for box style vs solid style have beens sent out. I figured I'd put my opinion here and let anyone else voice theirs as well. Solid style grouping or boxes style grouping?
Style Choices:
- Solid Sytle - Formed in complete boxes for grouped sections.
Box Style - Similar to the default PFRPG Core Rulebook sheet. This is where individual boxes are grouped into sections and labeled by an overhead label. My personal opinion:
I've always been partial to the solid type, since it looks aesthetically pleasing to me. Also, I find that I end up doodling between the boxes of the box type anyway.
- Solid Type: A well defined section is given in a more compact and bolder format. This is more appropriate for documents used repeatedly and erased occasionally, also this allows the document to be reused for a greater period of time. It allows more to be fit on to the page while still allowing for clean lines to divide the section.
Box Type: A neat section is given in a more open and ink friendly format. This is more appropriate for documents filled once and rarely erased, also this allows the document to be printed over as it uses less ink. It works better for filling out in multiple colored pens (1 color for each stat and 1 primary - black). *EDIT* Second question: How much abbreviation is okay?

Personally I find solid type to look cluttered, not the kind of sheet I really enjoy looking at. I understand that it saves space, but personally, since I like to have a completist sheet anyway, I don't mind if it makes the whole thing a bit more in the page count. As for abbreviation, I think that once you have defined it once (like STR/strength for the attribute box) you can use just the abbreviation for the rest of the sheet, or if it's for someone more intimate with the system, don't even worry about defining the abbreviations. All us veterans know what STR and Fort is anyway!
This character sheet, just by the discussions on this thread, sounds like something I'm definitely interested in. I have just about every sheet that is free on the internet that I can find, as well as a few that I've paid for. I like to have options for myself and when I'm DMing for my players, so as long as it's just a few bucks, I'll probably get it.

Box type looks better for me. It seems cleaner and easier to pinpoint the relevant Ability Score. And it's printer friendly as said before.
I do believe though, that the Temporary score should be the last one, considering it's the one that changes the most, having it there in the midle can be a pain with erasers and not so easy to find either.
There is no TOTAL modifier, I don't think adding another box is the best way to go, but I believe something could be acomplished or easier to understand in that regard, I just can't think of something on the top of my head.
I believe abreviations with the full word in smaller letters below are better looking and it helps sometimes, specialy for those that do not have english as a native tongue.
Just my 2 cents. ;)
Great work so far.

I also like the box type of setup. I tend to use spaces in between the boxes for notes on my next level stuff like what ability to increase or how many skills points I get and where I am thinking of putting them. The solid style just seems too restrictive and is very ink intensive for printing purposes.
*anxiously awaits the legal landscape sheet....*

This post mirrors my own thoughts perfectly so I won't repeat it. Just consider this a big +1.
For a price point I would consider $10 to be too much to pay for a character sheet. The chances of me buying it will increase exponentially the cheaper it is. I would like to see a price of $3.99 and would not only be happy to pay it but I would also be on the lookout for more stuff from the producer of it if it works well.| Wicked K Games |

Thanks! What about having the temp at the end, but placing the scores in this order:
A: (Total) Current Stat, (Total) Current Modifier, Original Stat, *one box each of alterations: equipment, inherent, etc), Temp Stat
Example: _25/+7___18/+4___+2_+2___+3
B: (Total) Current Stat, (Total) Current Modifier, Buff Stat, Original Stat, *one box each of alterations: equipment, inherent, etc)
Example: _25/+7___+3___18/+4___+2_+2_
C: Original Stat, Original Modifier, Alterations (one box each), Temp Modifier, (Total) Current Stat, (Total) Current Modifier
Example: _18/+4___+2_+2___+3___25/+7_
or
D: Original Stat, Original Modifier, Equipment Change, Inherent Change, (Total) Current Stat, (Total) Current Modifier, Buff Amount, Buff Time Remaining
Example: _18/+4___+2___+2___25/+7____+3
I think I liked the first example is best because it puts your current stat easy to read up against the score it is. I don't think I need to keep the modifier boxes for boost because the only two really needing to be listed are where the original/current is (with modifier) and what is being added to the score. Having "+2 stat/+1 mod" for a headband of +2 whatever gets too confusing. If you think an example is in order, I'll send it right away.
I'm mainly focused on the visual layout of boxes vs solid, but this feedback is helpful.
| mdt |
I like the box type better, but I can see where the solid type would be good for things like NPC sheets or enemy sheets where you might be erasing and rewriting often.
For PC sheets or summon cards, where you will fill it in, print it out, and use it as is for a very long time, I think the box works better. Easier to read and less ink.
I think you could abbreviate everything, honestly. If you're concerned about that, add a page at the end of the sheet with an index of abbreviations. Something like this :
STR -> Strength, this represents how strong your character is.
.
.
.
AC -> Armor Class, DC of hitting your character with a normal attack.
TAC -> Touch AC, DC of hitting your character with a touch attack.
FFAC-> Flat Footed AC, DC of hitting you if you are surprised.
And so on.
| Wicked K Games |
That idea sounds great MDT... kinda like a glossary page.
for the sake of getting this out here, I'm gonna take what I've got an run with it for a while, so I can meet my deadline on this. The two things you MUST remember when designing anything be it a car, house or character sheet is :
1. Less is more
2. Form follows function. If you do not follow these you will fail.
An excellent premise with solid logic. I think I have come to the conclusion that the box type has won. I will release a single sheet in the heavier solid type, but the variants I suppose will all be box style.

so, is this thing available for sale yet?
would love to buy it from you.
Actually, it is the majority of the way done, but I have some things I still need to complete like the variants and the fill in forms. I appreciate the support and will try to have this available as soon as possible!

Questions:
How many containers do you use in a game?
How many tools or kits do you use in a game?I'm thinking that usually I use a haversack, a bag of holding, and a quiver of convenience.
Another honorable mention, these sheets should be fully compatible with the six APG classes.
I know for myself, I just usually have a backpack and a pouch. Once I reach alittle higher level its the Handy Haversack or the Bag of holding for me. Makes life so much easier.
If its possible to say add a Bag of Holding into your gear and have the sheet then make the Bag a place to put new gear into. Keeping track of its weight and such? Just an idea.
I certainly would pay for a good sheet, I have spent maybe $50 this year on different software and sheets. I still can't find the perfect one :) I am currently writing a VB tool for myself to use during play. I am always willing to try something new though!

Well, to be perfectly honest, I'm trying to decide if the sheets in the inventory should have 2 or 3 container slots. The trade off is room for extra tool/kit slots. There is regular inventory still, but the organization of inventory and containers is something I've always wanted to see a little better.
I think I've noticed in game that there are only two containers players use:
The haversack to get quick items like scrolls, potions, and wands,
and the bag of holding for everything else.
You helped me with my question because I think that usuallywhen the bag of holding isn't enough, the PC upgrades or drops the least expensive loot. Thanks for the feedback!
| Wicked K Games |
How important is the feature of the sheet beening fillable on the PC (and savable) vs not as well as regular fillable vs auto calculating?
Please let us know where you stand on the two questions on a scale of 1-10... This is a factor in the release date. I will be making these forms both fillable and calculating either way, but the question is whether I'd update the file (the purchaser would be informed via email for downloading the updated file) or make sure it's finished before launch.
Either way fillable forms and save sheets will be a feature, as well as instructions for optimal results. :D

I use 3 containers most of the time myself. A backpack for equipment and such, a pouch for money and other "reach in your pocket" items, and a sack for loot so I can drop the sack as a free action to make my movement as high as it can without taking a move action to drop the backpack.
As for tools, the only ones I ever see in regular use are Thieves' Tools and a Disguise Kit. I defintely have never seen anyone with more then one or two Tools/Kits.
So, personally, I'd rather have more container slots then tool slots.

My pleasure, really looking forward to this, especially the landscape booklet version .. willing to beta test if you are still looking for help in that area.

Great sheet : 8
PC Fillable (must be saveable) : 6Autocalculating : 5
All are useful for different purposes, but a great sheet is the most important - I'm happy to print and scribble.

I appreciate all the quick responses, thank you!
Chris - The tools/kits I generally carried as a rogue and used often:
*Crowbar (Steel)
Disguise Kit
*Lock (Superior)
*Magnifying Glass
*Manacles
*Spyglass
Thieves Tools
Would you consider this (*) gear though? I see the point of three containers. I'll just make both available, it's only a minor tweak.
Undeadlord - For the landscape booklet I think this to be like a calendar a bit. :D
Brock - Excellent point. I think I'll initially set this up with forms and have the auto-calc within two weeks for an update along with any little tweaking that may help.
I have abandoned the solid style altogether because the boxes look so much cleaner in the inventory and race/class sheet.

Yeah, I always put those asterisked items into gear, though thinking about it, a crowbar would be better in a tool/kit section. The rest of it I'd still consider gear though.
Oh, there was someone earlier that wanted 6 weapon slots, but you could only fit 5 or something? I was wondering, maybe you could drop one of the lines for the classes (so you have 4 lines for classes instead of 5. Could that provide the extra room needed to get 6 weapon slots? I personally rarely go over 3 classes (2 base and a prc), and my characters that really multi-class still rarely ever make it over 4 classes total.
PS: Glad to hear you dropped the solid style. Really ugly to me.
