Questions on Create Undead

Rules Questions

Im new, but I love the pathfinder system (but I never read 3.5e before) and I think its pure brilliance.
Especaily Animate the dead. But one thing that I just dont get is Create undead. There are rules for hightening the levels of skellotens and Zombies but not for any other undead. Maybe im just a dumb idiot and to stupid to understand how to breath but, I understand that a devourer is a very powerfull undead at 10-15th level yet I can only summon him at lv 20 with no explanation on how to edit him or what to do. I tried checking and at lv 20 a devourer would nead a crit in order just to score a hit. This goes to other undead including the heucevah (Does it get evil cleric lvs ?).
This also applies to summoning monsters.
I understand I could add things to him on my own but I was afraid it would mess up something in the game.
Finaly does my familair Dragonly get sorcerer levels.

Hi ujjjjjjjjjj,

Welcome to the game and to the messageboards.

I am not sure I fully understand your questions but I will give it a go anyway.

Skeletons and zombies are advanced in accordance with the size of the body you are animating. Once a skeleton or zombie is animated its abilities do normally not change. The size of the corpse you can animate is dependant on your caster level.

Create Undead also creates undead creatures, like ghouls and mummies, with set abilities. Even if these undead can be advanced by the GM to meet different challenge ratings. However, the spell Create Undead only creates the basic creature.

Undead creatures you create are not necesarily intended for destroying your enemies. They serve a roleplaying purpose as much as they do a combat role. That means that you should not count on your undead minios to win your battles for you. They might help you out, but you are still going to bear the brunt of the battle yourself. The same can to a lesser extent be said about Summoned Monsters. They of course are only there to help you with a battle or other immediate challenge, since the duratin of the spell is quite short. But you still should count in doing some hard work yourself. In conclusion, the monsters you create are not intended to crush your enemies, and if they do not have the effect you desire it is because you are using them for the wrong task. You should definitely not modify them since it would throw the balance of the game and you would actually be cheating.

As for familiars, they are only a spellcasters helper and ussually have no spellcasting abilities of their own. Being a familiar does not improve on any innate spell abilities of the familiar creature.

Il try to alobarate Here.
If for example I kill a dragon and want to animate it as a wraith what happens? If I animate it as a mummy what happens? Please elaborate.
I know i can a animate it as a Zombie but If i want to test out Crate Undead what happens?

Sovereign Court

Short answer: you can't.

Long answer: go get the 3.5 Advanced Bestiary, which is full of templates that let you create "Dread XX" undead and "Non-Dread XX" versions. These STILL aren't covered by the Create Undead spell, so you and your DM need to be best buddies and in agrement on doing this.

Then you need far more powerful magic.
