okay so a disarm weapon says

When you use a disarm weapon, you get a +2 bonus on Combat Maneuver Checks to disarm an enemy.

Implying that any weapon can be used to make disarm checks, but if you use this weapon, you get a +2 bonus.

but trip weapons say

You can use a trip weapon to make trip attacks. If you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the weapon to avoid being tripped.

note the bolded part and how it's a sentence in and off itself. Doesn't this mean that you can only make trip attacks with weapons if the weapon has the trip quality. Not that you can't still make trip attempts without a weapon, you can trip people with your bare hands, just that only trip weapons can make trip attempts with the actual weapon.

If you could take trip attempts with any weapon wouldn't it have read when you use a trip weapon, if you are tripped during your own trip attempt, you can drop the weapon to avoid being tripped?

For most weapons that won't really make a difference, since if the enemy is adjacent you can just make a trip attempt without the weapon, but it makes a big difference in reach weapons like glaive.

You are correct.

Any weapon can be used to make disarm attacks, but only trip weapons permit you to make trip attacks.

However, unarmed attacks can be used for both disarm and for trip attacks.

So Little John did not sweep Robin's legs out from under him with a quarterstaff then?

I knew I shouldn't learn my history from Errol Flynn.

Right.

Robin Hood Daffy might be a better historical source. . .

Ho, ha ha, guard, turn, parry, dodge, spin, ha, thrust.

Nope, no trip in there. . .

Is there a link to the official ruling on this?

Or an errata?

Because this fails a reality check. I have used an 8 foot long pole, aka a reach weapon, to trip my half brother when he was clearly more than 5 feet away.

I can only foul your legs if I use one of a specific small list of weapons which pointedly not include a long spear. Am I the only person who finds this silly?

On a related note how would Pathfinder deal with throwing a spear, axe, shooting an arrow etc. so as to pass between a fleeing persons legs causing them to trip? Again this is something I have actually done. My half-brother was coming to kill me so I threw the 8 foot long pole at him and it went between his legs and he went down.

I read that there was an official ruling on this somewhere?
