Ready and willing!

"I can see this is going to be an interesting group to travel with."

Davin enters the inn from outside having woken early and gone outside to pray in the open air. He wordlessly fills his plate and eats his morning meal. After he finishes, he rises and heads to his room to gather his belongings and returns clad in armor.

So, are we ready to do this?

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae1 (Warrior of the Shining Light) FC

Basil represents a picture about as far from the traditional Image of a Paladin as possible...his plate armour is browned as a protection against rust..his shield bears a simple canvas cover with the symbol of Tyr painted on it..his eyes are covered by a single flimsy strip of white gauze which in no way impairs his vision..one gauntlet is coloured grey. He carries no backpack just his belt pouch in addition to his arms and armour.

"I'm ready to go"

Kara goes back to her room to collect her gear, returning with her braided. A quick incantation muttered under her breath, and her hair turn light brown.

"Ready." She says with a grin.

without horns and a tail, that is :)

If Huergar didn't already know Basil, I imagine he'd ask something like "Basil, why the gauze over your eyes?" I'm kind of puzzled by that myself. I didn't see anything about rust protection on your character page, so I suppose it's mundane protection, not proof against rust monsters. Does +3 magic plate really need mundane rust protection?

Just curious, not trying to quibble. I appreciate the imagery to the effect that Basil is not the typical "knight in shining armor".

The morning is nice. Even with Huergar sleeping late, you are able to get to the edge of the Shadow Gap. Thankfully, no Drow forces have been reported, and both of the hamlets you pass along the way seem to be in good order. You find a nice shrine maintained by a priest of Shaundakul, Piotre Redmark, who speaks highly of the safety of the pass, even given the recent... problems with the Drow. He doesn't know much more than that, as his wanderings take him into the stonelands more often than not, and he is only at the shrine for the evening before heading back.

The first day into the Shadow Gap goes very smoothly, outside of more breaks due to climbing uphill and checking for any signs of an ambush. You are all very wary, and, to your surprise, nothing happens. You find a defensible cave that closes twenty feet into the hillside, with no signs of an animal or other being using it, and sleep relatively fitfully for the entire evening. For those of you foraging, you are guaranteed a meal of rabbit this fine evening, as they are everywhere, and generally ignore passerby.

The second day in the Shadow Gap brings some insight. About midday, you find a large red circle... in the middle of the road. All around the circle are drow bodies, most of them in a state of decay (heal check to determine how long, Knowledge (arcana) for the circle itself), there are 45 bodies total. Many of the drow bodies have been branded (Knowledge (religion) to determine significance)), many with a spider symbol. Some of the drow are marked on, especially the females. None of the bodies have clothes, nor do they have any gear. There is a cave not far from here that has tracks leading from it, but it is caved in at this point (Knowledge (Engineering), dwarves gain the racial bonus for this.). Noting the map, Sunaj and Finrod heartily agree that this is the first "ambush" point that there is. However, it appears that the ambush has already happened.

Anyone able to read Undercommon

Spoiler:
The writing on some, more carving of flesh, really, says "Heretic," although some of them are more vile in description.

Huergar can read Undercommon, but only translates the word "Heretic".

"Interesting," muses the other dwarf. "Have we happened upon a war of drow against drow? Though that prospect is very appealing, we must draw our conclusions carefully. Appearances, as they say, can be deceiving."

He examines the bodies as well as the surroundings.

I'm not sure what racial bonus dwarves get in Knowledge Engineering. I'm rolling it as an untrained check (bardic knowledge feature.)

Spoiler:
I assumed that the DM was generously letting us apply Dwarven stonecunning (+2 perception vs stonework traps) in this situation, since it involves a cave-in. I could imagine the same bonus to Knowledge (nature) to identify rocks. Even if it's ruled as a +2 circumstance bonus, I like the idea of applying stonecunning to anything having to do with stone.

EDIT: Anyway, if the DM makes a special allowance, why argue with it? :)

EDIT: Unrelated: I noticed that you have an owl familiar. It seems like that would be really helpful for scouting ambush locations.

EDIT: Oh, and it looks to me like you're short 4 skill points, since you didn't apply your Int bonus to your 1 level of bard (I think that level should have been 6 + 4 = 10).

The tiefling cast a glare at de Fermer. "We know nothing of these men and women, except that they were branded heretics. Unless our work is wanton slaughter of dark elves whose hearts will now and forever be unknown to us, then no one's work has been done here." Greene walked past the paladin to kneel before the body of an open-eyed Drow woman. He closed the eyes and looked around for something to cover her violated flesh. "Try and remember which of us is more capable of mercy. "

Thanks Huergar! I'll get my sheet fixed up.

Sir Basil de Fermer wrote:

Need the DM to return before I can reaaly answer that. I suspect RL may be interfering.

Huergar:

Spoiler:
You see that the cave in was caused by some outside force, as the cavern within is very sturdy, and would hold up quite nicely to mining. This may have been a rockfall trap of some sort, at least at one point in time. Perhaps it was a way to cover an escape route?

Onyx:

Spoiler:
While Huergar is doing that Onyx turns to look at the circle on the ground. It's really easy to tell that the circle was a something special. It summoned both fiends and something from this plane, likely drow given the particulars of the scene around you, possibly a modified Gate spell. It seems that the religious invocations on the circle match up with some cities' wish to destroy their enemies, especially surface dwellers. Thankfully, this type of circle requires a long ritual and does not seem active. It can be destroyed simply by erasing a single line from the circle, preventing any further danger.
The 'heretic' brand, in conjunction with the circle speaks of a possible civil unrest among one of the many Drow cities. There could be a religious upheaval among the Spider Queen's faithful going on here, but this alone is not enough evidence of this. Perhaps it's an interfaith dispute?
As to the cave-in, Huergar seems to be taking a number of notes to share with the group soon.

Finrod and Kara

Spoiler:
Finrod and Kara turn up no tracks other than to the cave-in. There are no other drow around, although there are a couple of hawks flying in the sky today, or perhaps they're vultures (hard to see from where you stand).

Kara:

Spoiler:
The only things you can really tell about the markings on the ground is that they are some sort of summoning spell dealing with Lolth, the Spider Queen

Basil:

Spoiler:
The bodies have been here three days total, and the markings in the circle have something to do with the Spider Queen's Worship.

The search around the day continues throughout the afternoon. The results aren't terribly fruitful, and it will be sunset very soon. There is a chill wind in the air, it feels... unpleasant.

Sorry for the delays, it has been a busy couple of days. RL is indeed catching up to me.

Male Elf Slayer Level 1

Finrod narrows his eyes as he gazes skyward and tries to identify those birds.

Knowledge: Nature-- (1d20+9=12)

Seeing that it is close to sunset, Finrod starts looking around for a defensible campsite.

Survival: (1d20+9=15)

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae1 (Warrior of the Shining Light) FC

"Whatever and whoever was responsible this happened at least 3 days ago given the state of the bodies..though I find it strange that scavengers haven't been at them. The circle is associated with Lolths worship but whether these drow created it or their killers did I cannot tell."

"There's nothing we can do here..I suggest we move on"

Onyx responds to Basil.

"The circle was part of a gate spell. I imagine that's what allowed so many of these drow to come out of their underground realm. Not all of these inscriptions along the circle are magical; some of it is political graffiti. I can't say for sure what it means, but my guess is the drow have been fighting a war over religion."

No problem DM. This is a great game, thank you!

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae1 (Warrior of the Shining Light) FC

"A gate?..that is powerful Magic indeed..and all the more reason for us to move on as quickly as safety allows"

Liberty's Edge

M Dwarf Ftr8/Rog1

"I was just wondering why someone would block this cave entrance from the outside. The cave is sound, and the entrance did not collapse on its own. Is it to prevent someone from getting in, or from getting out?"

Huergar climbs the rocks (take 10+15-3=22) to see if any can be safely removed from the top to allow entrance to the cave. If so, he begins dislodging them with his crowbar.

"Someone might want to try detecting if there is something nasty in there, before I let it out."

Onyx scales the rockfall as well, though with far less dexterity and confidence as Huergar.

"Detection, you say? Aye, my cousin, that's what I'm good at. All I need is a small opening ..."

I'd like to cast Arcane Eye to see around the landslide. This requires a hole at least one inch in diameter to the other side. I'll roll a Perception check to find it, if it's there

Finrod:

Spoiler:
You see that the creatures above are vultures, with certainty. It is odd that they are avoiding the bodies, as the bodies should be in much worse shape than they are.

Huergar and Onyx

Spoiler:
As Onyx searches fruitlessly for a hole to see through, Huergar begins to attempt to move some the cave-in boulders with his crowbar, the rocks all begin to shift. There is a loud rumbling noise, and the cave in begins to grow, causing both of you great discomfort if you don't get out of the way! Reflex saves, please

Finrod begins searching for a defensible campsite, and finds one a mile down the road, which is a nicely small cave with merely one entrance. He returns just in time for all of you to hear a rumbling from the cave that Huergar and Onyx are in!

Male Tiefling Rogue 4/Paladin 5

Greene drew his weapons and said a prayer to Sir Andress' god, "Lathander, give me eyes to see into the heart of evil. If what comes deserves no pity or mercy, it shall have none."

Spoiler:
Greene activates Detect Evil and points it toward the rumbling.

Greene:

Spoiler:
There is no evil in the rumbling, this sounds more like a landslide.

Onyx:

Spoiler:
I'll be posting your and Huergar's situation once he posts his save. Also, doublecheck your REF modifier, it looks like it's one point too high, as you have no dex modifier. No need to reroll the save, I'll keep the result and modify as necessary.

Off to work now, I'll try to post again tonight if I can.

Male Elf Slayer Level 1

Coming back up the road, Finrod hears the rumble and immediately darts into the lengthening shadows of the treeline.

Stealth: (1d20+29+4=47)

Yup, my Ref is too high by one point. Fixed it, thanks

IC is down. I'll try again later.

DM:
I wonder if I should have searched for a trap, rather than merely saying I would dislodge the rocks only if it appeared that it could be done safely. I don't know if this counts as a trap. I'm not asking for a different ruling, just for future reference. (I need another level of rogue to get automatic trap spotting.)

Liberty's Edge

M Dwarf Ftr8/Rog1

IC is still down. In case you need a result before tomorrow night, I took out my blue Frosted(tm) Chessex dice:

Reflex 1d20+3=16

Huergar's balance is poor, and he totters ridiculously on the shifting rocks. He casts one worried glance toward Onyx before desperation demands his full attention. Not letting go of the crowbar, he tries to grab anything with his free hand.

DM:
EDIT: In case it matters, Huergar wears a ring of feather falling (he has a terrible fear of falling).

Ready to rumble.

Onyx:

Spoiler:
You deftly maneuver yourself and are only hit by a couple of boulders. The cave seems to be wildly unstable, and the rockslide is not visible due to all of the dust from where you just fell. The rocks themselves are still sliding down, but you react and are not buried. You take 12 points of damage (and yes, you did make the save)

Huergar:

Spoiler:
The crowbar slides into the boulder, and you realize that this part of the cave in was a linch-pin (so to speak), holding a much larger amount of rock behind it. It is most certainly not safe here, and you should expedite your running away as soon as possible. The cave seems to be wildly unstable, and the rockslide is not visible due to all of the dust from where you just fell. The rocks themselves are still sliding down, but you react and are not buried. Unfortunately, as with all accidents of this nature, you aren't able to dodge everything. You take 19 points of damage (and no, you did not make the save)

From the cave mouth, you are able to see a puff of dust flying out, and, moments later, both Onyx and Huergar emerge, looking a little bit injured, as well as coughing and gagging on the dust they've come out of. Not far behind them, the cave mouth eventually collapses, and a small rockslide happens outside, fortunately everyone is well out of the way by this point.

Is the investigation complete here? If so, let me know.

Male Human Paladin of Iomedae1 (Warrior of the Shining Light) FC

Basil blinks as Finrod vanishes into the undergrowth..as the two Dwarves rejoin the party he raises an eye brow..

"I think we are done here..don't you" he says adressing nobody in particular

Coated in dust from head to booted toe, Onyx plops down on the ground and continues coughing. When he recovers, he takes a few drinks of water, gets up, and reaches into a small sack tied to his belt. He plucks out what seems to be a glass eye, which he rolls between his stubby fingers as his hands trace arcane symbols in the air.

I cast Clairaudience-Clairvoyance at a point fifty feet past the main bulk of the landslide facing us. If successful the spell will last 8 minutes.

Kara barely supresses a laugh.

"Dwarves causing a rock-slide... I have got to start writting this stuff down!"

"How badly are you two hurt?"

DM:
First you said "the cavern within is very sturdy, and would hold up quite nicely to mining." Then later "The cave seems to be wildly unstable". Also, you said that the rockfall was caused from the outside. When I tried to move the rocks from the outside of the cave (and from on top of them), suddenly I was inside the cave and almost buried alive. Do I still have my crowbar?

"Silence, please."

"Our foes are probably observing us as we speak."

Though Onyx's eyes are shut, he moves his head about as if he were observing new surroundings.

For DM_Darkmeer

Spoiler:
Sunaj plots the relative distances from his present position of the open spaces so he can dimension door without fear of obstruction.

Male Tiefling Rogue 4/Paladin 5

Greene sheathed his weapons and scanned the treeline for evil hearts or evil intent.

DM:

Spoiler:
Concentrating long enough to do a full 360 and detect evil at my maximum range. Assuming I detect none(and I realize it wouldn't pinpoint foes for several rounds or detect anyone hiding behind a thick enough tree)...

"Kara, if you want to conserve your healing energies, I can spare a little of my own to help them. Onyx, are you all right?" He noticed the dwarf seemed preoccupied.

Huergar:

Spoiler:
I see how you read that. You were about 10 feet into the cave, which, given the terrain, should have been very sturdy. Believe me, the cave is sturdy, and with the notes I had made was trapped. The trap itself was triggered, and the part of the cave you were in was holding back the rest of the trap. As to being outside the cave I said it was caused by an "outside force," which could have been a trap or some sort of spell (move earth or similar). The cave in, unfortunately, came from deeper and above, something that was blocked until after your character was moving rocks. Sorry for the confusion. And yes, you still have your crowbar. Dwarves remember their tools, even in cave-ins.

Onyx:

Spoiler:
At the point you are looking, straight above you is some sort of pin, which is now broken due to the cave-in. This rockslide was definitely part of a greater trap of some sort, and below you, you do see a dark hand peeking from under the rocks and boulders. Someone did a great job in making this, as it would force rocks further out from the point of the trap, and trying to mine back in would be met with utter failure, at least for the first couple of times. It would be better to mine from above, rather than where you and Huergar were trying to go. Sadly, this was not visible from the other side, and you and Huergar are very lucky indeed to not have been caught in the secondary landslide. Further into the cave, you see nothing. There are no bodies, no exit, to speak of, and no other runes along the walls floors, or ceiling.

Sunaj

Spoiler:
There are a number of places to Dimension Door to, most of which have a mild amount of rocky cover (treated as 1/4 cover). Simply put, the rest of the area is clear. However, it is very unlikely that you are being scryed on, given the scene around you.

Finrod:

Spoiler:
Given that it will soon be dark, you may want to push everyone along to the defensible campsite soon.

Greene Tanache wrote:

DM:** spoiler omitted **

Greene:

Spoiler:
You detect no evil, except the residual evil on the Drow, and the evil of the circle.

Eyes still closed, Onyx's bushy brows furrow. He is obviously upset at something.

"They set two traps here, the cunning devils! The first one buried the drow. The second was meant to bury rescuers. Huergar and I are lucky to be alive."

He blinks, rubs his eyes and looks up to Sunaj.

"There's nothing in the cave, not even a tunnel."

"If there is nothing in the cave, I'm going to try to break these accursed circles."

Carefully, Kara tries using here boot to rub away the lines, hoping to ruin any chance they have of being used again. She then steps back to see if it worked, casting a spell under her breath...

Detect Magic to see if any magic remains in the circles, if so, she will follow it up with Dispel Magic

"Damn them."
