Which doesn't change the fact that the DM allowed them, and even if they aren't a legitimate hindrance, they're perfectly legal if the DM approves.
Well, everything is perfectly legal if the DM approves. That doesn't make the DM any less of a chump for doing so.
Systems problems propogate when you have poorly-written and/or easily exploitable rules, coupled with players who gleefully exploit them, combined with a DM who approves them without thinking about it. None of those conditions alone is sufficient. Ideally, rules would be well-written and carefully vetted in advance, thus sparing the players the temptation, and sparing every DM all of that work -- but alas, that's not always the case.

I find your use of the word "exploit" here somewhat inappropriate.
If the DM allows flaws, the DM is saying, "Go ahead and use flaws." If the player then goes ahead and uses flaws to acquire abilities appropriate for her character, that's use. Not abuse. And considering this is a group where the players feel they have to make extremely powerful characters just to survive, using flaws to gain very powerful feats is merely playing the game as it has to be played, as they were taught to play, as they were trained and required to play, at that particular table.

Taking a flaw "hated by elves" in Tolkien-land is legitimate use. Taking the same in a campaign world with no elves is abuse, not use. Also, my remarks were general in nature, not confined to one particular table at which the DM vs. player animosity seems a far greater issue than any particular rules quirks.

Why did that feel so much like the "It's not you, it's me..." breakup speech?

He seemed somewhat confused with his badly written posts. Good riddance to him. Now he can go to BG and get yelled at for not being clear with what he means.
