Round one
Hru utters a low hoot as the ferocity of his swing causes his sword to take a chunk of wood out of a stallpost. He stares briefly at the man's rictus scream and the feathered shafts protruding from him before setiing into a low crouch and moving forward to help Sir Manfred.
I said he was "still moving forward, stumbling under Hru's greatsword in his agony" not that he was dead.
As Liandra takes care of the last guard outside and Knotty knocks out the second last guard inside, the guard that Eria popped two arrows into manages to give voice to his scream. Liandra and Galadar, silhouetted by the light coming from inside the stable, are sure that the scream was loud enough to attract attention if anyone is paying attention in the towers.
Round 2 -- only one guard alive inside the stables.
Knotty Ashe
Round 2
"Hru, take that guard out, he's going to bring the whole guard on us!"
Knotty swings his arm back in a vicious little chopping motion and the air near the girly screaming guard forms into a chop to the back of the neck.
Telekinetic Fist, Ranged Touch 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16, damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Moving away from the stables, I examine what I can see of the keep-house for possible upper level entrances, looking for windows, balconies or even tower parapets.
There are two very narrow shuttered windows on the second floor of the keep-house. There's no way that Galadar could get through those windows, althouh a much smaller person might be able to.
The windows on the tower of the keep-house are equally small. In fact, Galadar can't see a single window large enough for a human to move through.
Tarren the Dungeon Master
The luckiest guard in the world survives getting knocked in the back of the head by a telekinetic fist, but it pushes him forward underneath Hru's greatsword. Feeling the 'wooosh!' of the sword he brings his shield up reflexively and deflects Eria's arrow.
Manfred, you've got one chance to shut him up. ;-)
Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg
Sir Manfred steps to the last opponent and attacks again.
Longsword attack:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Longsword damage:1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Shield bash attack:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Shield bash damage:1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
IF that drops the last opponent, he will extinguish the light.
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Manfred finishes off the last guard whose luck finally ran out. He stumbles forward driving Eria's shafts deeper into him. The light extinguished, the stable is quiet except for some exciting restlessness from the horses and the breathing of those who just saw combat and lived.
Outside, Liandra sees no attackers but hears some chatter on the guard towers. The noises in the stable have aroused their curiosity but they evidently haven't realized intruders are within the walls.
Knotty Ashe
Knotty moves to the nearest window or door and casts upwards towards the guard tower and a bit higher.
silent image
A large red dragon with fire pouring from everywhere hovers silently with its mouth opening and closing as it stares at those tasty guards.
"Dragon!" shouts the halfling wizard.
"Let's run guys and gals, like that thing is real," he whispers to the party.
He starts off towards the nearest door in the main keep, screaming dragon.
Galadar
|
"Oh, no, he didn't...."
I slap my palm to my face with a groan, wanting to cry...
"There's goes the stealthy option," I whisper in frustration to Liandra, and then move towards the side of the front door, hiding in the shadows so as to not make myself a target while the rest of the group moves across the keep-yard.
Stealth: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27
Making yourselves look like guards walking from the stables to the keep might have been more practical. Just saying. ;P
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Shouts of "dragon!" rise from every tower. Guards from the other towers begin to run towards the illusion. A few fire crossbows at the illusion putting their fellow guards in danger.
You've got two rounds of action before the next consequence of this event occurs. It is 80' from the stable doors to the keep-house.
Knotty Ashe
He did. At a full run, Knotty reaches the door in one round. But I'll wait for the others before I do anything silly. Ahem, I didn't think that two halflings and a half-orc could pull off the sneaky stuff even at night. Hopefully the guards will concentrate on what is happening in the sky for now. But we should definitely get inside quick though, don't you think?
Sir Manfred VonFalkenburg
For a few seconds, Sir Manfred stood over his last opponenet, almost physically ill from the way he has had to bend his code until it was almost unrecognizable. Disguises, lies, attacking through a tunnel, under cover of darkness...
Sir Manfred sighed just a little and said a brief prayer to Iomedae. Perhaps the sacrifice would be worth it, to prevent more people from being enslaved by the Dukes of Hell.
Hearing the commotion outside, Sir Manfred changes his disguise to resemble his last victim, and he charges outside with the others.
Hru Gorumgrag
"Do not fear, Gorum is with you !" he calls to Eria as she reteats "You'll do no good outside the walls in any case...I will protect you mistress" he comtinues sincerely. But seeing his path clearly he goes on "crazy wizard!" Hru is heard to mutter as he charges out of the stables behind Manfred
Tarren the Dungeon Master
The door to the manor house flies open. Six guards stumble onto the steps and stare up at the dragon. They point up at the sky. "Warn the baron," one yells to one of them. To two others he says, "Stay here!".
Three of the guards run towards the dragon.
Stealth checks from anyone running toward the keep-house who doesn't want to be seen.
Pssst. Which guard tower did Knotty cast the dragon at? Map.
I assume Knotty is still concentrating. If he does run full-tilt, I think that would call for a concentration check (vigorous motion while casting 10 + spell level) to maintain the illusion.

stealth: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (4) + 17 = 21
I wait for the first three guards to rush out the door and gain a little distance before rushing into the house behind them, attacking the first guard I come to and again trusting Liandra to follow my lead. I move as quickly as I can, wanting to get the guards before one of them can run to tell the Baron.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29
confirm critical: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26
damage and sneak attack: 2d4 + 4 + 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4) + 4 + (5, 3, 1) = 21

I'm going to assume that Hru and Manfred are with Eria behind a wall of obscuring mist. As Knotty is shouting orders to the guards, I'm going to ask for a bluff check from him.
Galadar and Liandra have taken down the two guards in the entrance. They can see the entrance hall beyond the guards is now empty.
Hru Gorumgrag
thanx for taking control of that craziness
Hru will rush forward to the Baron's house as easily as possible with guards, dragons and mist, keeping Mistress Eria well protected and Sir manfred in front of him. (provided no one hostile crosses his path)
I guess that would be at double move pace

So the guard that went to warn the baron has already gotten away - I was hoping to shoot him with a crossbow. :)
Seeing the empty hall, I turn my attention quickly to the doors. As soon as the rest of the party is through them, I will shut them and then bar them from the inside.
"Watch the halls," I say to Liandra with a rueful grin as I manage the doors, "We don't want the enemy to be surprising us more than our allies. See if you can't figure the best way for us to go. I'm thinking upstairs is probably best."
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Bluff check 1d20+2.
The halfling tries to look bigger and more commanding but without the hat it's a bit difficult.
The adventure gives the PCs -10 to any bluff checks against these particular guards, but I'm going to reduce it to -5 due to the distraction. So, they have to beat 15.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

I assume you waited long enough for the three guards heading to engage the dragon to move off in one direction, that would have given the guard going to warn the baron about the same amount of time. Give me a perception check to see if you hear which way he went.
Tarren the Dungeon Master
I did, but one could hope the guard lingered. :)
Perception: 1d20+8
Galdar hears a door being thrown open and some footsteps to the north.
Edit: I am dreading the law of averages catching up to Galadar as we enter the harder parts of this adventure. :)
If you didn't want to be held to the law of averages, you should have made your character chaotic.

My posting will become erratic over the holidays. I'm off tomorrow on a road trip and might be offline for a couple of days.
I think this may be a good place to take a pause. You're outnumbered, on foreign territory, and in a few moments every guard in the place is going to know something is up. I see some every-roll-counts-please-let-this-be-a-crit action in your near future.
Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas:
Tarren the Dungeon Master
Back ... Let's recap.
Several of the guards went out after Knotty's illusion. Knotty strode across the courtyard and ordered them to hurry and, to even Knotty's surprise, they did. Liandra and Galadar have slipped across the courtyard in front of the keep-house and taken out some of the guards. Knotty, Hru, Manfred, and Eria, shrouded in fog and protected by darkness, have a chance to follow Galadar before this 'dragon smoke' clears and the illusion fades. Already some of the guards are beginning to realize that their crossbow bolts are going through the dragon like it wasn't really there.
Galadar has heard a man running around the corner to the north.
Liandra Nightwind
Liandra dashes around the corner after the fleeing man. As she comes within sight of him she skids to a halt, dropping both her khukri (Free action), and whipping her loaded crossbow forward, (Quick Draw) to fire at the man's back.
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25
