"I'll bet," Annie said absently, frowning with concentration as she took his pulse. She looked around. "Anyone else hurt?"
Annie waits until everyone who looks injured is within 30 feet of her, then channels positive energy once again. 1d6=5 w00t for good rolls!

Spinnaker Jon makes his way to the Captain's cabin, kicking away empty liquor bottles, and begins poking around.
"Hm, If'n I was Capn', where would I hide a ring..."

Annie looked at Bryson. He still looked a little bruised, but the fearful state of his injuries was much improved. "Try not to get yourself in such a state, my friend!" she said, patting him on the shoulder. She looked around. "Anyone find anything? I'll help you look!"

So far the search is up to DC 16, unless I'm mistaken. I'll give anyone else a chance to assist for a little while longer before deciding your findings.
To Bindlplotz, the pirate woman says, "Vark spent most of 'is time yellin' at us, but whens he wasn't, he was in the cap'n's cabin with that hussy, Ketrana, do all manner of ill deeds that would make the filthiest bottom-feeder blush. If it's any consolation to ye and yer people, any wrong he done ye be visited back on his scabbard. Word be that Ketrana carries the pox in her pantaloons, if'n ye know what I mean."

First I'll cast CLW on myself to take some of the edge off. 1d8+1=3
If anyone else is injured, I'll use my second one on them, otherwise I won't cast it.
Then, I'll help to search the ship. Perception check 1d20+14=33
Once the ring is found, I'll stay on the ship to see to the animals. When the guard arrives, I will grill them to make sure that they will treat the animals well.
Just a reminder.

I was only counting that for the hold since that's where you were when you made the search. Jon and Annie decided to search the captain's cabin after that roll.
Given the nature of play-by-post and the fact that no one is currently under duress, it might be easier for Bryson to take 10 or 20 on a search of every room in the ship, if that's what you meant to do. With Annie and Jon's rolls to assist in the Captain's cabin, that would still be a DC 28 even if you were taking 10.
When there are time constraints, I'd like to remind anyone making Perception checks to search that specifics are important, especially when it's a large, many-chambered area. When there aren't time constraints, I would definitely advise taking 10 or 20 to minimize the number of rolls.
Description of the findings will be up shortly.

"Mmmm I don't know how many time could remains for us mates" the rogue shouts to his comrades while watching uneasely the docks to be sure no one is approaching. "If you have no success with this search perhaps we should sail away and find a peaceful place where we could analyze this mess with the needed time".
The scar on his face is again pulling his skin in a way Sneaky is starting to perceive as a warning of some difficulties approaching.

After rereading my post I see what you mean. I will take your suggestion on taking 10 on the search checks in each cabin.

The cabin of the Blue Nixie smells as if wild animals have been bedding here, much like the hold of the ship, although you all suspect that has more to do with Vark and his lady friend's personal hygiene and extracurricular activities than anything else. There are spent bottles of rum littering the floor and some exquisite linens that no longer appear as valuable as once they would have been.
There is a heavy seaman's trunk with some of Vark's personal affects--nothing valuable among the spare pants and shirts--save a small leather pouch containing 100 platinum pieces.
Bryson, Annie, and Jon also find a secret notch in the headboard of the captain's bunk. Once opened, they find a signet ring with a scroll of paper rolled inside the ring.
If the paper is read:

A group of guards approach the dock where the ship was meant to be moored, 100 feet away. In the the midst of the guards, there is an old man dressed in nobleman's clothing.

"Here, I'll lash the anchorchain to the capstan and haul the anchor aboard." Spinnaker Jon said as he rigged the anchor for hauling.
Profession: Sailor- (1d20+3=6)
As Spinnaker Jon turned away for a moment to get the capstan bars, behind him the ratchet seemed to lift away all by itself. The released capstan spins furiously as the anchorchain slithers over the side in a furious rattle.
Jon slowly stands up, turns around and nods to himself at his luck made manifest again.
Then he turns to the rest of his crew and spreads his arms.
"Good news mateys! The anchor be no problem now!"

Bryson Deepwinter |

"Hey, we should pay Miss Lavinia's debt with this money. It oughta upset the pirates to no end."
Bryson smiles when he recognizes his friend. "Hey, Annie, it's Keltar. I'll introduce you. He's a nice fella." He begins to wave, trying to get Keltar's attention. "Hey Keltar! Hold on, we'll be right over."

Spinnaker Jon |

But before they dock, Spinnaker Jon goes over to Sneaky and throws his arm around him.
"Sneaky my man!" then he lowers his voice. "Would ye do me the favor of not being seen by the guards? That way, if'n we are arrested, at least you can inform Lady Vanderboren and maybe bust us out if ye have to."

"Sure I'll do it, mate. I really think this is a good plan, I'll wait for news at The Plucked Parrot... If I'll hear you encountered some problems with the guards I'll see with Lady Vanderboren what we could do. Tell the others where I'm..."

if the group thinks it's better to take away the platinum consider as I've taken it with me

![]() |

Annie looked at Sneaky. "Hmm. We're here by Lavinia's request, and this is her boat. I think the platinum should stay here. It's proof, along with those poor animals, that Vark was up to no good - even if we get in trouble over the manner we found it. But the ring - that's small, easy to carry, and it's what Miss Lavinia most needs. I'd say take that if you take anything - but make sure you won't lose it! And be careful! Injured people were swimming in the water! You don't know what might be swimming around in there, attracted by blood!"
She looked over at Jon, who'd told them how to bring the ship in. "I'm glad you're here to help us bring it in! Let's talk to the harbormaster. Hopefully, with proof of Vark's wrongdoing in the hold and at the word of his friend we've kept with us here, and Miss Lavinia's word that we came at her request, this won't be too awful!" She swallowed a little nervously and squared her shoulders as she looked at the knot of official people waiting for them on the dock.

Bryson Deepwinter |

"There's no need to hide. Keltar is a nice guy. Aj know him. He'll see what we've done here and fire that villainous Vark on the spot. Don't you worry none, Annie. I got this in hand."
Bryson will follow Jon's orders as best he can.

Spinnaker Jon |

Struggling as we are, once we get close enough to the dock, Spinnaker Jon will shout to the shore party.
"BEAR A HAND THERE, YE LANDLUBBERS! OR WE'RE GONNA CRASH INTO THE DOCK!"
He will then throw a line to them.

Keltar Islaran grabbed the line like an old sea hand and passed it off to the guards, using their strength and his experience to guide the ship into place. With that done, he addressed the group assembled on the Blue Nixie's deck.
"Now what in the name of Voltang's armor is goin' on here? Eh?" The old man scanned the group for a particular face. "Where's Vark? Bryson Deepwinter, what in the nine hells are you doing on that boat? Somebody better give me some answers."
Anyone who wants to smooth things over with the harbormaster should make a diplomacy roll along with their answer.

Spinnaker Jon |

Spinnaker Jon replies, hat in hand.
"Wall, see Cap'n, it's like this. Lady Vanderboren was mighty put out that after she paid the back docking fees to this Vark fella, suddenly he denies he was paid at all! She hired us to find out what kind of crookery the swab was up to; and when he undocks, we catch him red handed smuggling dangerous animals! Giant spider-crab-things! Naturally he puts up a fight but we rout him handily and he jumps overboard and swims fer it. We was takin' her back to dock when you happened by."
He grins toothily.

Gull Street Annie |

Annie nodded along with Spinnaker Jon's telling of the events of the evening. "That's right sir! We came to try and talk with Vark on Miss Lavinia's behalf, but..." Annie rubbed the back of her neck for a second as she thought over bringing up her own recent run in with Vark at the Plucked Parrot, "seeing as how I saw him drawing blades on customers at the Plucked Parrot, we decided that even just talking with a man like Vark might require a certain safety in numbers."
Annie watched both the harbormaster and the guards with him to see how they were taking their tale. "We came to the dock, and saw it bring prepared to take sail! We took a gondola out to talk with him, and he even allowed us aboard - then before we'd even all boarded, he attacked the dwarf and I! We fought to protect ourselves and Vark fled with some of his...er....men. This woman, however," Annie pointed to the pirate that surrendered, still being watched by Bindleplotz's eagle eyes, "surrendered. We looked over the ship and found cages of animals below. One horrible creature actually attacked us from the hold! After we killed the creature we looked around the ship to make sure there were no other dangers. We found a pouch of platinum pieces in the cabin where it appears Vark had been...er...sleeping. It's on the ship. I think it may be Miss Lavinia's fee she paid."
Still nervous with all the official people staring at her, but sure they'd done nothing to be ashamed of, Annie clutched her hands in front of her. "Please, sir, check the ship. Question the woman, or us as you see fit. But Miss Lavinia has paid her fees, and was being robbed of her belongings! Please reconsider letting her see her parents' ship!"
I don't know if you want us to assist someone with diplomacy or roll raw. I'll list my sense motive and diplomacy rolls here, please use them as you think best.

Bryson Deepwinter |

"Yessir ,Mr Kelter, they speak the truth."
Untrained diplomacy to aid the roll 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5. Hopefully I get a small bonus due to background.
Well that roll sucked.

Bryson Deepwinter |

Bryson goes over to the harbormaster and offers both his hand in friendship and the bag of coin. "It is good to see you this evening, though ah do wish the circumstances were more pleasant. Ah expect that there coin will be enough to cover the Vanderboren woman's debt to you. Your man Vark took it and then used her boat over there to smuggle animals. And if'n you want to see proof, you come with me and I'll show you." Bryson turns around as he speaks, expecting Kelter to follow him. He goes directly to the hold. "Ah'm no sailor, but even I know that a boat is supposed to be docked and Jon over there is a sailor and agrees with me. So you might want to ask your man about why this boat was sitting 100 yards out. Though ah expect when you see the hold you'll know why. Without a doubt you'll know why."

Sneaky |

Dgrim keeps quiet and let's the others try to convince Keltar that they were not the criminals here. Meanwhile, the dwarf looks around into the water, wondering where Sneaky has ended up.
If things went as I hope I should now be in a dark corner of The Plucked Parrot with a hand in one of my hidden pockets touching a special ring, waiting some time before going out to search for infoes from the docks

After a long and somewhat chilly inspection of the ship, the Harbormaster grudgingly acknowledged that his man Vark was up to no good. "Give my apologies to the Lady Lavinia," Islaran said, accepting the bag of gold. "The Nixie's hers again and for as long as I'm in charge of this harbor, her credit's as good as gold with me."
He returned to the dock and stationed a few harbor guards on the deck to keep watch. "Pleasure seeing you again, young fellow," Islaran said to Bryson, saluting the druid. "You could do a lot worse than this crowd."
Once everyone has made their way to the Plucked Parrot and retrieved Sneaky, I'll pick up at the mansion.

Spinnaker Jon |

Spinnaker Jon thanks the Harbormaster and hustles his crewmates off the ship. The we go to the Plucked Parrot to pick up Sneaky and go to the Vanderboren Manor to report to Lady Lavinia.

Gull Street Annie |

Annie nodded with releif at the harbormaster's grudging acceptance of their tale. "Thank you, sir. We will tell Miss Lavinia of your help." She looked around at her new friends, eager to leave the harbor. "What do you think, a quick stop at the Plucked Parrot for a sip to calm our nerves, and then report to Miss Lavinia?" She chuckled. "I can't guarantee it's the best drink in town, but it's one of the cheapest, and I can guarantee it's drinkable." She swooped down and picked up a pebble from the ground, concentrating on it as she murmured thanks to Cayden Cailean. As she felt it warm and burst into a torch bright glow she smiled and sketched a quick bow to the harbormaster and started toward the Plucked Parrot. She hoped she hadn't read Sneaky incorrectly. She was sure he' be at the Plucked Parrot - as long as he made it out of the harbor and all the way there safely. She added another kick to her step to get there more quickly, then slowed as she realized she was outpacing her companions.

I'll assume there was some small talk during his inspection and that I introduced everyone (Annie) to the harbormaster.
"We'll let her know you said that, Sir." Bryson hurries after his companions.
Dgrim Urnidukr |

Dgrim moves off the ship, out of the way of the harbormaster, and waits to see how the man reacts. When all goes well, the dwarf makes sure he has all his possessions on him, ready to leave.
"Alright then..." Dgrim agrees to follow Annie to her spot, walking deliberately the whole way. Once at the Plucked Parrot, Dgrim doesn't hesitate to ask, "What've you got to drink, here?"

![]() |

XP and treasure from the night's encounters will be posted on EpicWords soonish. Assuming nothing too dramatic is posted at the Plucked Parrot before then, I'll post the next leg of the adventure tonight. Lavinia will be overjoyed that you were able to recover the ring. Give me an idea of when the group returns to her and I'll take over from there.

Gull Street Annie |

Annie smiled at Gertie as she sat down at one of the larger tables with her new friends. She looked idly about, hoping to spot to Sneaky as she nodded at regulars she spotted around the room. It was odd to be here as a customer instead of server.
She knew what was on the schedule from yesterday, and recommended her friends stick with poultry and seafood offerings. "We get fresh fish from the docks and chickens are easy enough to come by here, but we don't get very fresh larger livestock here," she explained quietly. They'd had a nice dinner at Lavinia's, but they'd also had a busy and stressful evening. Annie opted for a warm cup of soup and a small beer - nobody without purification magic tried to drink straight water in Sasserine, and she still didn't want to advertise her new magical abilities around town.
She leaned over toward the half orc, Ghirrak, and murmured "I'm too well known here to go over and collect Sneaky if he's hanging out in a corner. If he doesn't join us and you spot him, maybe you could collect him before we leave?" She laughed and joked with some long time patrons as they asked her why she would come to the Plucked Parrot on her night off, but she was restless as she finished off her small cup of soup and sipped at her beer. She'd like to get back to the Vanderboren estate and give Lavinia the good news.

Spinnaker Jon |

"Well, p'raps a bit of chowder and a beer would settle m' stomach. That was a right nasty sight, seein' that poor swab with 'is head chewed off. But we shouln't dally too long now."

"Will do."
Ghirrak closes his eyes for a moment, then smiles. As he opens his eyes, a faint glow seems to come from behind them as he stares into a dark secluded corner of the tavern.
"Got him."
Besides, if Sneaky's instincts were as right as they usually seemed to be, he was looking forward to thier next meeting with Lavinia as well.

Bryson Deepwinter |

Bryson sits with the group and eats his fill of the dishes that Annie recommends, but doesn't drink very much at all. He is cheery and talkative with everyone except for Bindlplotz, who he tries to stay away from.
