I'm planning a new campaign, which is set in Golarion. It's a war-themed campaign; PCs are soldies/spies/special ops for their organization. (Notice I didn't say country.)
Anyway, the game starts 3-6 months after war has been officially declared between two countries and their allies. Any suggestions for said countries? Right now I'm looking at Andor, Cheliax (of course), and Taldor.
Which countris would you have at war and, most importantly, why?
joela |
This can be done even without a war going on, as there are border incidents all the time between the two.
Thanks. I'll check them out. I could always rein in the official declaration of war, campaign-wise, for a few months or so. Border skirmishes will increase in frequency, get larger, more bloodshed, etc., it will be glorious!

If sticking to countries in Avistan and Garund, I would likely go with Taldor/Qadira as well. Or, I would have Cheliax attempt to claim Abasalom. It has happened many times in the past with other nations and is bound to happen again. Some nations could ally with the aggressor while others would help defend the city (Andoran is high on that list).
Both of those scenarios involve major powers at war that can influence far-flung nations and religions. Heck, just protecting the Starstone would be a priority for a number of faiths. Who wants Cheliax potentially flooding the Outer Spheres with gods pulled from their trusted citizens?
Now, I have been wondering lately what the Githyanki Invasion from Dragon #309 and Dungeon #100 would look like. I used that scenario for Greyhawk and I would think Golarion would be a good match.

Funny that you mentioned that.... ^_^

Thanks for everyone's interest. I'll do my best to keep y'all posted.
Regarding the Qadira/Taldor. I have the my supps but it's been a while since I read them. As I familiarize myself with their situation, any suggestions on what'd be some good "triggers" to get the two fighting? Assassinate a prominent merchant? Kidnap a prince/princess? Blow up one of the cities? Castrate one of the other side's ruler's precious pet? (Hey, people have started wars for less.)

Okay, the PCs are starting at first level. A couple of the players are now asking what system to build their PCs. I'll probably go with point-build but what level? High fantasy? Or do we want to go more gritty?
More gritty I would think; lower ability scores means the PCs don't have so much of a 'comfort zone' in terms of hit points, spells, etc, to operate from.
And you could make it a three way thing, where Taldor is trying to invade Galt, against a background of revolutionaries who don't want Taldor in and people fed up with the revolution who would welcome Taldor as 'peace-makers', whilst Taldor has to maintain a careful balancing act between forces commited to Galt and watching the southern border with Qadira...And Andoran might have any number of possibe interests in the conflict, ranging from 'we must support our revolutionary brothers in Galt at all costs' to 'while Taldor and Qadira are preoccupied, we can strengthen our position with agents in their nations' to 'frankly good luck to the Taldans as the revolution in Galt is something of an embarrassment to the cause and we just wish it would finally go away'. Of course there might be several factions actually in Andoran, each holding any, all, or none of these views, and it could be a game within a game, manipulating Andoren policy with regard to intervention in the conflict.
Edit:
Don't forget Veddic, master of the codex who saw a rewrite after the Superstar contest, and who is a villain with an interest in wars.

Well I forget his name but from what I recall the ruler of Qadira is looking for a excuse to start a war with Taldor. So maybe he makes one. Like hire merc's have them dress up as Taldor soldiers and attack some of his people giving him his excuse to start a war. Or maybe he bribes a Taldor general to really do it or something.

You can also run a Campaign Where the Wizard-King Nex returns to rule His country named after him, and the Lich-King Geb re-starts the war between Geb and Nex.
Would be a battle of High Magic, deep political Intrigue and Undead!

I like the Varisia - Cheliax dynamic.
Cheliax abandoned Varisia years ago to play at home and play with their new Devil friends. Now they are looking for new wealth to fuel their vices and the Asmodean Inquisition is heading to Varisia to stamp out the church of Iomedea.
Intrigue, politics, conquest and the Inquisition! What more can you ask for?
Naturally Cheliax could squash Varisia like a bug but most of the lords could care less and it is up to the Hellknights to stir up anger against poor little Varisia.

Just pulling the quickest suggestions that I recalled from the Campaign Setting...
Molthune and Nirmathas could work in my mind. But their conflict is a bit more expected as their have been several invasions over the years by the Imperial Molthune to take back the land from the Rebels of Nirmathas.
Brevoy could be used if you feel like a civil war. Almost a decade ago the rulers that united the two different factions that make the country vanished. With them gone tensions could easily break into a civil war.

Thanks. However, I'm going to borrow heavily from published mods, especially Pathfinder's stuff, with minimum conversion. I'll probably adjust most of the humanoid NPCs like orcs, etc., but little on lamias, demons, and the like. And the PCs will have access to magic items via their organization.

Nice. It's at, the very least, a way to introduce lots of undead to a PC party bereft of clerics. (Paladins can only do so much).
Huh. Maybe the PCs will have something to do with the return of Nex...! (Where's my Expedition to Castle Ravenloft...?)

[Bold by me.]
I was looking for an excuse to run War of the Burning Sky.

Ack. They don't even sound familiar :-(

joela wrote:Ack. They don't even sound familiar :-(Makes sense given the number of countries and that all the information I have on them comes from the Campaign Setting book. Here are PathfinderWiki links if you are interested in more info on them.

Hugo Solis wrote:Oooh... I love war-themed campaigns... I'll have to watch this thread carefully :DShall I post summaries of the PCs' actions? I generated this post originally to get ideas/brainstorm/sounding board, but will consider expanding it almost like a PbP.
That would be great feedback!

If this is going to be like a World War, one idea you might toy with is having a specific cause for he war. World War I was started because Europe and the Middle East had formed alliances and when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated the allies went to war with each other, resulting in the bloodiest war in all of history (I think. I think there were fewer deaths in WWII, I'll have to double check).
So suppose that the war starts as the result of some stupid incident like this between two second-rate countries and everyone gets pulled into the conflict whether they like it or not. Now suppose that the characters are involved in the action that causes the war... maybe they act as assassins, maybe they try to protect the person whose assassination causes the war, or maybe they're doing something completely unrelated and they witness some arbitrary act that sets it off.
Just food for thought, but it seems like the players would be more invested if they're involved at the earliest stages.

They'll definitely be approached about joining a side. And guess who'll have the unenviable position of diplomacy.... ^_^

An adventure where the PCs need to gather the spell components to animate the Field of Maidens would be really nifty.

The second world war was bloodier by about a factor of 4.
I like this idea. PCs are involved in the domino effect that escalates the hostilities until a full war erupts - with them in the middle of it of course.

Hmm, Wikipedia seems to agree with you. It says that WWI total deaths were about 37 million. The total dead in WWII was somewhere between 50 and 70 million. I guess I should check these things first before I assume that I know something. Stupid facts!

Don't have time to give this thread a good read through but I would suggest, if you have the coin, that you hunt down a copy of the Black Company RPG from Green Ronin's Mystic Vistas line. Good rules for war and playing in a war torn land.

I have them. It's one of the inspirations to my campaign. Heck, they may even pay Golarion a visit ^_^
