Male Human Expert 1

The chamber before you is bedecked in moldering splendor. Stained tapestries, lit by flaming tapers and bronze braziers, glisten with mold and rainwater. Pillows and blankets, black with mildew, cover the floor. Cracked mirrors and tarnished copper shields hang from a fishing net strung along the ceiling. The air is thick with incense, but no amount of scent or perfume could conceal the oppressive reek of sweat and spilled wine.

At the far end of the chamber, past a low table strewn with half-empty jugs of wine and nibbled sweetmeats, is a divan hung with furs. Asleep in a drunken stupor atop the divan is a portly figure in an embroidered robe. A glittering crown — topped with gems — sits nearby atop a small gold coffer. A trio of hooded guards, dressed in the formless gray cloaks of executioners, stand watch over the sleeping form.

None of them seem to have noticed Dannad as he peers through the door.

Male Halfling Rogue 2

Dannad holds a hand out where his companions can see it and extends three fingers. Checking to make sure his allies were coming, the small thief sneaks further inside.

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16 Stealth check. And can we get a map?

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Dagobert waits for the lighter footed of the group to go past him, carefully bringing up the rear.

M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

Hawkseer follows Dannad in perfect silence.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29

Male Deva Shaman 2

Galad follows the others with a surprising amount of stealth, and the wispy outline of the spirit can be seen whispering into his ear.

Stealth, using Speak With Spirits to add +4 to my roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Male Human Expert 1

Next update may not be 'till late tomorrow. I'm working until midnight and then have another shift at 8AM the following morning plus homework to do. I'll post as early as possible, probably between 3PM and 9PM EST. Sorry for the delay.

Male Human Expert 1

NEW MAP

Hawkseer and Galad make their own way up into the loft. The guards still don't seem to have noticed you, perhaps due to the dim, smoky conditions of the room.

Currently the whole room counts as him light.

Feel free to use the map to move around now.

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Dagobert awaits developments with interest.

How many movement points to climb the ladder?

Male Human Expert 1

The ladder is a about 3 meters high, so it'll cost 4 squares of movement to get up.

Male Deva Shaman 2

Galad looks to the others, waiting for them to make the first move.

Initiative, since we're probably staring the Beggar-King right in the face: 1d20 ⇒ 3 EDIT: That's a 4, forgot the +1.

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Init - 1d20 ⇒ 13 - no longer -1, let's see if this improves matters. Regardless, he'll still delay for clambering purposes.

Dagobert listen expectantly, but doesn't move.

M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

Hawkseer draws a fresh dagger in his offhand, and points to himself and then the sleeping figure.

Init: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Male Human Expert 1

Still waiting on some action from all of you.

The room remains still except for the fluttering of braziers.

Male Halfling Rogue 2

Dannad sidles to his right, slipping behind the curtain.

Moving to U-40, 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (2) + 11 = 13 stealth check to do so.

As he does so, he draws his magic dagger.

EDIT: Gorram it, that's like the first skill I've failed....

Male Human

Vandis stands guard at the bottom.

Male Human Expert 1

Boards creek under Dannad's slippered feet as he circles the room and sneaks behind the hanging tapestry.

The guards remain still.

Male Human Expert 1

24 Hour bump! Hope everyone had a good Valentine's Day.

Is Hawkseer advancing towards the person on the divan?
Is Dannad continuing to circle around?

M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

Would we have a surprise round at this point? I need to count actions.

Male Human Expert 1

Sure thing. Just need initiative from Vandis and Dannad, and we can start proceeding by rounds if you'd like.

Male Human

Initiative
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Male Halfling Rogue 2

Sorry. I are smrt. 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Dannad breathes a sigh of relief from his hiding spot.

Male Human Expert 1

Dannad hides behind the nearby tapestry and Hawkseer stands poised with knife in hand as the party prepares to use their surprise.

Everyone make sure and double-check your hit points on the tracker page. Remember, this is the official location for all your hit points, and is used by myself and the party leader for healing and damage.

Likewise, including after signing in

Male Human Expert 1

I got the same error but it went away after I signed in and reloaded the page. Please try again.

M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

I had done those things with no luck, but it worked this time. Yes, Hawkseer is bloodied. I'll save my one surge for when somebody heals me from dying. Where's a paladin when you need one?

Minor action: Name Oath target on apparent beggar-king

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Dagobert waits for Vandis and Galad to take whatever action they decide on.

Delaying. On his turn he'll use his move action to climb the stairs if it's possible at that point.

Male Deva Shaman 2

For his surprise round action, Galad moves to W40.

Wait -- just realized the hp tracker isn't updated for leveling. Not bloodied.

Good point Pat. I haven't personally updated anyone's hit points for them on the tracker. Everyone please do so ASAP.

In other news, today is my 11+ hour busy day on campus and I don't have time to post for Dannad and make all the updates right now. Regardless of Dannad's posting, I'll try and move things along later this evening.

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Can't get it to work at all. It no longer recognises me. I hate technology sometimes.

EDIT. Works. He's on 31/31 with 4/9 surges left to his name.

Male Human

OK, done. Vandis finally added as a PC as well.

Dagobert the Luckless wrote:

Coincidentally, so am I.

Male Halfling Rogue 2

Dannad whips his blade at the guard diagonal from him.

Sly Flourish vs G1, 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (8) + 11 = 19 vs AC, for 1d4 + 2d8 + 9 ⇒ (3) + (6, 5) + 9 = 23 damage because of First Strike.

Male Human Expert 1

Many apologies I couldn't keep my deadline. This is the worst part of the week for me and this could be an important encounter. I want to give it the attention it deserves. I will try and get through my studies tomorrow morning and post ASAP. Just wanted you all to know you haven't been forgotten.

Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Don't fret. We've all been there and done that. Post when you can.

Male Human Expert 1

In a flurry the party explodes into action. Hawkseer declares his oath on the target from across the room.

Hawkseer:
Through your newfound bond with the figure across the room, you realize it is in fact alive, but doesn't seem to reciprocate your enmity in any way.

Dannad whips a dagger at the standing guard and it strikes expertly into its neck with a strangely dull thudding sound. The guard teeters back and forth for a bit until falling over on the floor.

Perception DC 10:
The guards, or at least that particular guard, is an obvious fraud, no more than a mannequin with a large formless executioner's cloak thrown over it with weapons hung from its shoulders.

Galad moves to the edge of the tapestry to allow some room by the ladder for his companions and Daggobert heavily climbs to the top, which creaks under each step he takes. He manages to make it to the top, however, and sees the guard lying stiffly on the floor.

Vandis keeps watch at the bottom, having noway to join his companions at the moment.

As the dust begins to stir from the activity, a dagger snakes out of the shadows in the rafters above, and spins towards Galad. It flies a bit wild, however, and stakes into the wall next to the shaman's head.
Basic Ranged; 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 vs. AC for 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 damage.

Those with low-light vision can make out a small humanoid shape perched on the beams above. Currently very little can be seen of him other than his eyes, as the beams and shadows provide him with decent cover. He says nothing, the the glint of his blade can be seen once again as it reappears magically in his hand.

The figure on the bed remains still.

Questions: What's 'BS' on the map? And what would be the drawbacks of melee in the rafters? Thanks.

BS is the newcomer who threw their dagger at Galad and is up in the rafters.

Melee in the rafters will require DC 10 Acrobatics checks when you move and will count as difficult terrain. I'll start putting brown borders around anyone in the rafters with the next map update.

    M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

Thanks. Hawkseer can't fail a DC10 Acrobatics, so here goes!

Growling at himself for falling for the decoy, Hawkseer immediately steps through the feywild, emerging in the rafters near the small shape. He then launches his dagger at it, shifting grip to his falchion immediately afterward.

    Square S33. Ranged basic vs AC. Miss. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 111d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

    Male Human Expert 1

Hawkseer appears on the other side of the room with the scent of the Feywild on him and misses with the dagger throw, which falls down onto the matted covers of the nearby bed.

    DANNAD

    Male Human Expert 1

Dannad stands unsure for several seconds from his spot beside the tapestry, and allows opportunity to slip by.

Your actions are rather important during this fight, so I don't wish to take your turns if I can help it.

  • The rafters are about 10 feet up, and provide partial cover. All creatures with a brown border are considered to be in the rafters.

  • Male Dwarf Invoker 2

Frowning slightly, Dagobert contents himself with bringing light to dark places, sending a beam of scything flame into the rafters. He shuffles clear of the top of the ladder to let Vandis through.

    Move to W38
Avenging Light (Fort). If a bloodied ally is adjacent does +3 damage on hit.
    1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
    1d10 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

    Male Human Expert 1

    Vandis?

    Male Human

    move to X40.

    Male Human Expert 1

Dagobert lights up the corner, revealing what is definitely a sharp featured human with a face covered in knife scars, a face that winces in pain as Dagobert's invocation sears him.

Vandis clambers up the ladder in his heavy armor and sees the scene laid out before him.

  • Male Deva Shaman 2

The spirit forms in the rafters and slashes at the rogue. Meanwhile, Galad draws a sunrod.

Summoning the spirit in the rafters of Q34(I can do that, right? 6 squares away from me, 2 above me, and it's within range without getting into the Pythagorean Theorem), using a sunrod to get some decent light in here, then using Stalker's Strike on the mysterious man(vs Fort, add +2 if he's in bright light when I attack him): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 201d10 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

    Male Human Expert 1

    Galad:
I'm definitely okay with the spirit being in the rafters. To be fair, though, your spirit is still somewhat subject to gravity. Therefore, it's still considered balancing and can only move at half speed. I won't require any acrobatics checks from it though.

Galad's companion slashes through the dark figure's cloak after materializing balanced among the rafters. The figures eyes open wide with alarm and pain as the spirit draws blood.

The figure slashes at the tottering spirit companion with expert precision, banishing the creature with a precise strike to it's ethereal throat.
    Dagger Attack; 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20 vs. AC for 1d4 + 2d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + (2, 4) + 5 = 12 damage; -5 HP to Galad

Placing his gleaming dagger between his teeth, he then hops around the rafter with practiced ease and grins down at the party, giving a sly wave to Galad as he does so.

The figure on the divan continues to rest comfortably.

The room is now brightly lit by Galad's sunrod and the grime and dirt of the squalor is even more obvious.

  • M Eladrin Pursuing Avenger

Hawkseer moves nimbly around the rafters, looping partially around the knife-wielder, before slashing with his falchion.

Move to U34, avoiding OAs from BS. Bond of Pursuit vs AC. On hit, if target ends its turn non-adjacent, I can shift 4 (net 2) as a free action to end nearer it.

    1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 222d4 + 4 ⇒ (2, 4) + 4 = 10

    GM:

    Spoiler:
I will use Avenger's Resolve if triggered by BS -- if he hits me, I interrupt to gain resist 5 all TEOMNT.
