I love these boards. I enjoy the witty and sometimes biting repartee of many of the people on these boards. But I do not enjoy the constant snarking of some members against other members all in the name of which version of Dungeons and Dragons they love and prefer to play.

I, myself, am not a 4E fan, but rather than downplay what I realize is a decent game for those that do enjoy it, I would rather praise the game I have chosen to play and support it with positive statements and posts. I try not to take digs at 4E, though I will recommend things from 3.5 and more specifically PFRPG as that is my preference and where my knowledge base lies.

All I'm suggesting, nay, pleading, is if you are going to post, please, please, please, stop the constant sniping and bickering and derogatory statements about the game you do not like. We all get it, it is not your cup of tea, so get over it and on with the game you do like. Because while you may have something pithy, interesting or just plain enjoyable to say and for me to read, there are far too many names that are on my own personal list of "skip this one, I don't want the bile along with whatever they are trying to say".

This includes all the left-hand complement specialists that are here ... you may be saying it rather politely, but to my ears, you are still coming off rude, condescending and, to use the boards own terms, being a jerk. If the comments particular irk, I flag, but normally I just ignore you. For the most part, I stay out of those sections that hold no interest for me, and self-ignore all the baiters and flamers by skipping over their posts entirely.

We don't need to fight and divide. We can live peacable together. Some of us like 4E. Live with it. Some of us prefer 3.5 or older versions. Deal with it. Many of us are salivating for PFRPG and what it is bringing to the game we love. Stop snarking at us and splitting hairs on terminology. Play your game and let me play mine without your bloody attitude.

Maybe we won't agree, but we should be adult enough to grow up and play our games nicely. Thank you for listening.

... and yet ...

I find that I have a sudden urge to go to the 4th Edition Forum and make some rude comment about ... Dragonborn Boobs.

Silver Crusade

Gamer Girrl, this was a very well written appeal. I do hope all of us can take it to heart; however, don't be disappointed if things change very slowly. As humans, we have a tendency to defend very fiercely the things we care deeply about against any slight, whether real or imagined, intentional or not. It's simply in our nature. Dealing with deeply rooted feelings such as these involves a great deal of patience, tolerance, understanding, and, most of all, time.

On an aside, I really hate to be "that guy", but I believe the term is spelled "detente". A thousand apologies, but my inner Francophile was awake and felt the burning desire to comment.

.....

OK, that was a weird post. Discussing of the human condition and French spelling? This is what happens when you have to go to work on Saturday night...

Aye, and the "real" meaning of penultimate.

Those were the days. *Sniff*

I completely agree with GG. I play 3.5, PRPG, and 4E, all for the same reason: fun. I wish I had the energy to constantly post about how somebody should enjoy what I enjoy because I enjoy it, and then post how they can't possibly enjoy what they like because I don't like it. And then for good measure I'd add that it's not an attack, but anybody that criticizes anything that I do enjoy is obviously not just wrong, but also a smurf.

Lately I've been noticing the threads where certain certified edition warriors will post in a thread entirely disengaged from the edition debate, and out of nowhere, they'll throw one of their sworn enemies under the bus.

And then there are the self-high five threads, where everybody comes in to say that the game they like is the best. Inevitably somebody says, they're wrong because the other game is better. And then everybody jumps on that poster for trolling, whether or not it's true, which gives them leave to be a smurf to this smurf.

What's the benefit of all the smurfiness? Is internet cred really that great to have? Or do some of these people feel like they are on the front lines of a war and they are saving souls by defending the game they play?

If you play 4e, you need to realize that D&D has had a lot of stops on the way that contributed to the new game and a good number of players don't agree with the changes. 3.x (or PFRP) players need to see 4E as a game they don't like, but that's what is currently supported by the publishers. And all sides need to recognize that liking or not liking a game doesn't make a person more or less smurfy, so let it go.

Well said Gamer Girrl. Pity people on both sides of the divide can't just chill.

I'm willing to entertain this idea, so long as everyone admits up front that I'm right all the time about everything. There's really two sides to this story as well. I am right all the time about everything; other people are angry that I am right all the time about everything. I can't seem to stop being right all the time about everything, so the only solution seems to be that everyone else acknowledge that fact and come to terms with it.

Seriously, I do think things in the 4e threads are generally better and getting better all the time. There are still some flare-ups and threadcrappers, but most of the hardcore haters and avengers have moved on to greener pastures.

I think we also have to recognize that saying something critical about a game isn't necessarily taking a dig at it or its players. We should be free to make critical comments about the games we play and, at times, use them to explain why we don't play something. I've seen plenty of times on this board and others where heat has come from someone reacting poorly to reasonable criticism.

Incumbent in all this is the presumption that we should be acting like mature, reasonable people whether posting a positive comment, a criticism, or rebutting either.

Agreed.

For others who may want to know (yeah you, you know who you are), the Celery on Peter Davidson's lapel (he was the fifth or sixth incarnation of Dr. Who - methinks sixth) was used as an indication of inhabitability of the planet atmosphere/air etc.

I don't recall if they ever did much else with it in the series, though.
