Rogan makes a quick search of the room for the (seven) arrows that missed their intended targets.
Perception Check: 1d20+11=20
Rogan finds only two of the seven to be in tact. The rest seem to have been damaged by hitting the stone walls, except for two which landed in the fiery portal in the next room.

I created a simple spreadsheet battlegrid with google's docs. I can't access it at work, but i could email it to myself as an attachment from home beforehand if it's up.
We don't need to do anything fancy except maybe make the squares we can't cross though (like.. oh.. walls!) dark, and then we can move around with battleship-like grid coordinates.
Like "I move from D6 to F9 and cast sleep on the kobold in G5."
Thought this might be a helpful, albeit simple, tool to aid us in our pbp'ing.

"This one suggests we go the way these... hrmmm... kobolds came from," as he points toward the eastern passageway. He'll kneel down and search the body of the kobold at his feet.
You search through the kobold bodies and find small-sized suits of leather armor along with small spears. On the two workers you find slings along with seven bullets on one and three on the other.
The popping and hissing of the molten pool in the eastern passageway gradually grows louder as you approach. The intense heat of the substance is felt on your face and the ash in the air slightly burns your eyes. As you enter the room, you spot three narrow chutes open in the ceiling directly above the pit. Two other narrow chutes open up on the other side of the pit that seem to curve upward toward the surface.

The Keeper of the Tomes |

Omen glances up to the narrow chutes set in the ceiling and offers a puzzled look before muttering, "Unnatural." He will shake his head in bewilderment before moving onward, keeping a wary eye on the lava.
As you keep your eyes on the lava pool below, you hear a screech as suddenly, a worm-like monster drops from the ceiling to the floor below. The creature has a body as long as a man is tall, with four tentacles a little longer than human forearms. The tentacles, located on its head along either side of its jaws, are segmented, as is the body itself.

Omen's Turn

Omenkalas Nariah |

Omen advances cautiously on the beast, drawing the hand axe from his belt once more. He approaches the grick and swings...
if a miss weakly, the blow glancing off the creature's rubbery hide.
if a hit evenly, the handaxe biting through the grick's tough hide. Damage Roll: (1d6+2=4)

Unfortunately Omen misses; the swing of the sharp handaxe was not enough to penetrate the rubbery exterior of the Grick.
Rogan's go. Please kill this thing.

Can we make it standard operating procedure that Rogan makes a perception check as soon as he enters a room/hallway? I'm sick of these easily avoided surprise attacks.

That's why 4th edition's introduction of "passive" perception (i.e. taking 10) is pretty handy. I'd be cool to say we're always taking 10 until we actively start scouring, and if we roll a 2 then, well you're just looking in the wrong place...

The arrow's bite is enough to fell the creature as it spasmodically twitches after it flops to the ground. A green ooze-like substance pours out of it's mortal wound.
OK, NOW you get 300 xp.

Rogan finds nothing more than a bubbling and steaming pool of lava intermingled with blood. Bloodstains mark the surrounding edge of the pool indicating it appears to be used for some vile, nefarious purpose.

Rogan Tane |

Rogan stares for a moment at the blood stains, muttering to himself, "I was afraid of that."
He turns from the fiery portal and strides purposefully back toward Omen. "I think I should bring Noctum down here to try and track the girl. We may not have enough time to wander these halls searching for her. I'm afraid we may already be too late."

Here's the editable/viewable BattleGrid

Rogan Tane |

Rogan will return to the surface via the stairwell we entered through. If Noctum is not immediately visible, he will give one short blast on the signal whistle. When he appears, they will head back down and Rogan will ask him to try to follow the scent.
The battle grid is sweet.

Rogan returns down the stairs with Noctum.

Noctum moves ahead of Rogan as he returns to the room with the foreboding lava pool. The wolf stays low to the ground and sniffs heavily for several seconds.

The wolf sits and makes a few low growling noises at Rogan.

Indeed it is. Unfortunately I cannot access it at work. I will update it when I get home though.

The Keeper of the Tomes |

Rogan and Omen
Rogan speaks briefly to his companion the wolf and then turns to Omen. "I think we should return to the main chamber. Noctum is not catching any scent here, though I think it a good sign that they were not taken into this chamber."

Yeah I agree with the Passive Perception houserule. I will implement that from now on.

I think we can keep aimming for once/month if that works for you fellahs. Hopefully I can keep it on the same weekend I'm Star Wars-ing with Goss.
Let me know your thoughts!

The Keeper of the Tomes |

"This one... hrmmm... agrees and will follow the lead of our wolf-brother and friend Rogan." He offers one last perplexed glance toward the chutes above the lava before following the elf and enigmatic wolf from the chamber.
Led by Noctum, you follow Rogan out to the main chamber. Noctum pauses and sniffs around a bit near the broken obsidian obelisk. Rogan seems to speak with him briefly and then turns to you.
"It looks like most of the tracks head down the eastern passage. There are other tracks which head north, but the scent is strongest with these." He points down to the few visible tracks made from the crushed fragments of obsidian.
With Omen's agreement, Rogan will head down the passage to the left keeping as quiet as possible.

Omen stares at Rogan stoically, then nods once in agreement. He will remain a short distance back (40 ft) to ensure he does not spoil their silence.
The hallway leads about 20 feet until it reaches another hallway which heads to the north. At the other side of the hallway is a set of double-doors marked in what appear to be dwarven runes engraved into the stone.
Rogan stops and you can see him peer around the corner to the right. He then turns and waves you on. You hear him whisper, "Coast is clear at the moment. The tracks continue north."
Rogan disappears around the corner and you continue to follow him to the next hallway. This hall is pitch black, however your keen orc senses allow you to see several beyond Noctum. They allow you to see a T-intersection up ahead.
Noctum continues slowly down the hall, keeping mostly to the right until he suddenly stops. Rogan follows suit, placing himself up against the wall as an evil hiss rises from the darkness ahead. A floating dwarven form shrouded in full plate rounds the corner. The air about this dwarven specter shimmers eerily, and the walls and floor sizzle and smoke where it passes. The thing's boots scorn the earth, gliding a full foot above the masonry floor. It drags a cruel bloodletter axe in the air behind it. As you take a closer look, it appears the armor and axe are encased in a large cube. It slides forward and gets ready to attack.

I do not have Rogan's character sheet so I am not sure what his stats/abilities are. We might have to pause until later.
As for the Adventure Path, I wouldn't mind running Legacy of Fire if you guys want to go in on that. I was actually considering running that before but felt a little wary because there are only two of you but I think we could work it with an NPC or an animal companion.

Omenkalas Nariah |

DM
Well after it rounded the bend, Omen finally notices the appearance of the dwarven figure. Confused by what he sees, Omen is caught off guard and reacts sluggishly.
After a few moments of delay, he'll bark a cautionary warning to Rogan as storm clouds begin to fill his eyes.
Pausing until later is fine. I'll be at a Prayer Meeting at church tonight from 7 until ??, so if things are rolling while I'm gone, you'll likely have my stats handy. If you don't, the relevant ones are in Omen's profile.

The Keeper of the Tomes |

"Rogan! There is no hiding from that creature! This one suggests we fall back to more advantageous grounds!" Omen's voice fills the passageway with urgency, alarm hinting at the edges of his tone.
"Agreed!" Replies Rogan as he turns around to head back to the main chamber. "What should we do, take the route through the pit chamber?"

The Keeper of the Tomes |

"Back to the first chamber at the least, this one hopes it will gorge itself on the corpses of the fallen," with that he turns and quickly retreats to the larger chamber they entered first.
You both return to the main chamber where the felled kobolds litter the room.
"Perhaps if we allow it to follow us here and then head through to the north passage, it may connect with that hallway. It can't be that intelligent."

Steve Wilson |

"It can't be that intelligent."
If those aren't famous last words, I don't know what words are. I have probably just doomed the both of us, Johnny.
I'll be at church until about 8:30 tonight, men.
Omen and KotT

The Keeper of the Tomes |

"Hrmmm.... we will try as you suggest."
Rogan and Noctum lead the way through the northern hallway into a t-intersection. Omen, as you look back, you spot a growing shadow coming from the eastern hall slowly moving into the main chamber. The cube seems to be moving quite slowly.
Noctum takes a left at the intersection and begins heading several feet until he reaches another t-intersection. As you pass down the hall, you see a sort of gooey residue left by the cube which then passes around the corner down the left hallway where you were when you encountered the thing.
Noctum pauses and sniffs the floor and then turns down the right passage. You both follow cautiously for several feet down the hall until you spot a light source several feet away. As you gain closer, you hear what sounds like a pitched battle. The sounds of the language of kobolds is heard yelling across a wide room along with what sounds like a small humanoid voice yelling in common,
"Back, you foul critters! If I must die here this day, then I shall do so! But, not until I dispatch as many of you as I can!"

Omenkalas Nariah |

Before charging into the next chamber, Omen will reverently call upon his ancestors for aid once more. Once White Ear materializes beside him, Omen will look to Rogan and nod, offering little more than a grim nod to his friend and companion.

Rogan Tane |

Rogan nods back and grimly sets an arrow to his bow. "Feast on the scale skinned to your hearts content, brother." He whispers to Noctem. (thanks for the correction, J-rod). Without another word, he draws the arrow back and steps into the room.
