The Red Button

Off-Topic Discussions

Walking through a forest, you find an ancient tree. Embedded in the tree's trunk is a big red button. It's not glued or nailed to the trunk, and it's not an object that the tree has simply grown around; it appears to actually be a part of the tree, somehow. The button is round, smooth, shiny and...well, irresistibly pushable. Beside the tree is a powerful telescope pointed at the sky. Looking into the telescope, you see a planet that looks much like Earth, though its continents are different. Below the button is a sign that reads PRESSING THIS BUTTON WILL DESTROY THIS PLANET, AND THE CIVILIZATION WHICH INHABITS IT.

Do you push the button?

The beautiful shiny button! The jolly candy-like button!

Walks into the thread, taking a break from the RPG'ing, arm in arm with her prince.
Ooh, look darling! A shiny, pushable, button.
Pushing it, if the sign is correct, will end that world over there.

It's a trap!

To Aritha:
Well that is what appears to be the situation, dear. But sometimes these are just setups by goblin pranksters, devised solely to get you to look at the telescope - which is of course treated to leave a black ring around your eye.
Produce his own immensely powerful pocket spyglass/scrying lense, and procceeds to examine the remote planet through it.
Hmm.
Passes the spyglass to Aritha.

Examines remote planet.
Oh dear. I see what you mean, darling.
Passes the scrying lens back.

Well that settles that I would think.
Folds spyglass up and puts it away.

Oh yes, darling. (She speaks brightly and cheerfully.)
Even if the information about the button were true, so much more cruel and more fun to leave them to suffer like that, rather than put them out of their misery.

Arm in arm, she giggling slightly as he tickles her under the chin, the pair wander off out of this thread and back in the direction of the RPG threads...

Indeed! THIS planet (the one you are on, not the one the telescope is pointing to) is the one that would be destroyed.

I think I'd feel pretty bad about myself if I destroyed my own planet.

*pushes the button*
Now I'll be able to see if there really is a doG.

Hmm.

Any super-duper seeig-device aimed at that spot in the sky reveals the same distant planet.

"Must...not...push...!!!!"

Liberty's Edge

This was a great Richard Matheson story! But you have to offer something in return for pushing the button, like $1M; then give it a solid Monkey's Paw-ending.
