With a seldom-used incantation, Lavender conjures a cloud of whirling shards of force among the ravens, to no avail as the creatures easily dodge.

Tavar casually blasts divine light at the ravens, hitting them solidly and sharing The Raven Queen's grace with one of his allies. He moves briskly towards the stricken sorrowsworn.

Now clearly failing fast, the ravens refuse to give up, slamming beaks, claws and verminous feathers at Genryu.

Genryu backs cautiously away from the swirling mass of feathery doom and smacks at them with his maul. Another raven falls, concussed by the reverberation, but the blow just misses the bulk of the flock.

After taking a moment to catch his breath, Theren returns to Morthalet and holds his fullblade a few inches above his foe's head. He motions to Tavar. "Awaken him. We have much to discuss."

Tavar uses healing skill to revive M.

"You got some 'splaning to do. Answer our questions and your death will be peacefull."


Morthalat crouches miserably on the ground. He doesn't look remotely happy at being hauled back to life.

Morthalat gropes short-sightedly for his spectacles, only to find they've been broken in the battle. He sighs.

"What is it you want to know?"


Two surges, 169 hp

Lam leans on the handle of his fullblade and lets his friends do the talking.

"You will tell us all you know of The Winter Witch, her plans and allies we have yet to face"


Morthalat huddles on the ground, holding his cloak around him. He seems happy enough to tell you what he knows.

"Koliada? She is part of Lord Orcus's grander plan. They have a bargain. He will corrupt the Sun's Sliver. In return, she will move her winter far to the south. There is a crater lake on a still-active volcano. You know the one."

He looks at the blank faces of the group and shrugs.

"Or possibly you don't. Not just vandals. Ignorant vandals. One of the great primordials is trapped there. He remains trapped as long as the lake remains liquid. Cold spells, prayers and invocations have failed to freeze it and Lord Orcus is of the opinion that the nature, being primordial herself, may be his best ally in freeing another primordial. Koliada controls winter."

"My job, as you have realised, was to find the Sun's Sliver. Which has taken months. And you have destroyed the one mechanism capable of doing so. I hope you're pleased with yourselves."

"If you are planning to confront the Winter Witch without the artifact, you can't defeat her. Not that you'll get to her anyway. She's got ice trolls, icelings, frozen treants and that damnable dragon of hers guarding her. Quite apart from being up a mountain and through a fey portal."

"It's white, ancient and has an unpronounceable name. What else is there to say about a dragon?"

"What exactly do you mean 'without the artifact, you can't defeat the Winter Witch'?


"You need the Sun's Sliver to defeat Koliada. That trinket is sealed under there guarded by an angel."

Morthalat looks smug.

"Unless you know some way of opening the seal, that magnificent piece of gnomish techology was the only thing capable of breaking the seal, freeing the angel and letting you get your thieving hands on Koliada's doom. Destroying it doesn't look so clever now, does it?"

Spoiler:
Morthalat isn't actually lying. As far as he knows, that's the only way of opening the seal.

There is a soft squelch as Theren drives the point of his fullblade through Morthalat's throat.

Good aligned characters standing by and allowing a helpless (and comparatively speaking, helpful) prisoner to be slaughtered?

Who is casting this ritual? It will take 10 minutes of chanting and incense burning and a DC35 Religion check, followed by a DC35 Arcana check. You may aid each other.

A lot of this party is unaligned and unlikely to care much for Morthalat's demise - I just thought it was worth mentioning :)

The sigils glow and fade as the seal breaks. As it does so, there is a sharp cracking sound and fissures start to form on the stone and gold of the seal. The ground rumbles as it blasts in all directions and a huge angelic form armed with a pair of icy katars bursts forth.

Rising into the air, Remliel speaks.

"Mortals, look upon me and despair. Though it was hoped that this day would never come, prophecy also foretold it must. Know that the light that lies below can be removed only over my lifeless body. Only through this trial by combat can I give up the Sun's Sliver."
