Ditto here. Luckily we're right at the beginning, so restarting is no big problem.

Please see the discussion thread.

After finding no detection of evil, Maracus looks back and forth between his two companions. "May the virtues guide us." He readies his ransuer in case something comes from either room.

"Did you hear that, I think the time lock has released, let us try our door again."

I began to open the door just a peek again

Male Human Fighter 1

Kellith decides that discretion might indeed be the better part of valor, and does not open the door before him. Instead, he focuses his attention on the door that his small companion is peeking through, throwing axe in hand.

F Human Wizard 1

"Try not to get flanked", Lyria calls to no one in particular, then positions herself in the back of the corridor, ready for anything to come out of the doors.

I just realized that Rurik hasn't posted since before Mal disappeared. I hope he's still around somewhere...

As Uran pushes open the door, the light from the group's torches spills into a dark room. It smells of mold and rot, and dank air seems to seep out into the larger hall. Through her tiny crack, she can see rotten, moldy crates and barrels stacked along the walls. She can't see the entire space, but the area she's peering into looks to be about twenty feet across (north-south) and at least thirty or forty feet long (east-west). She sees no sign of movement.

Tikk snorts by her side, then gives a loud sneeze as the moldy air hits his sensitive nose.

Male Dwarf Rogue 1(Favored Class: Wizard)

Rurik looks into the darkness. "I'll lead." As he enters the room, he carefully searches the floor for traps.

Search, Spot, Listen: 26, 6, 21

Rurik finds no traps, but he gets a much better picture of the room as a whole as his darkvision pierces the gloom.

Survival, Knowledge (nature) or Knowledge (dungeoneering) check, DC 15, from anyone looking into the room (the Survival check may be made untrained):

Spoiler:
The mold in the room is likely to produce poisonous spores if disturbed; the the spores would be inhaled, so holding one's breath or covering mouth and nose should keep anyone in the room safe if the spores are released.

Untrained Survival check (1d20+1=20)

Kellith agrees with Sevegny, "Hold your breath and cover your mouth if they are released. You SHOULD be okay. Hmmm." The fighter takes a deep breath and follows the dwarf into the room.

Even as Kellith steps into the room, those still out in the main hall are shocked to see the next door up on the left open, and a motley group of humanoids spills out into the chamber. There are three goblins, two kobolds, and two humanoids that look somewhat like humans, but with heavy brows, receding chins and extremely heavy builds (think Neanderthal). They are armed and armored, and all shout in anger at the party, calling "Die in the name of the Beast God!" and "Blood! Blood for the Bestial One!" in Common, with what you assume are similar cries in Goblin as well.

Initiatives!

Okay, since this is the first fight, we're going to try to see how we can work battlemaps. I'm going to steal from Aubrey's Eberron and Runelords games and use coordinates - you can make a decent map with Excel this way, so hopefully everyone will be able to follow along.

The map has A-H across the top and 1-20 down the side. The central area is C-F/1-18, with side areas at A-B/15-18 and G-H/15-18. The stairs you came down are at D-E/19-20 and points south. There is a door at A15 (leading into the room where Rurik and Kellith are), and another one at H15. There are also doors at C9 (where the attackers just appeared), F9, C3 and F3. If you're confused, remember to check the map; hopefully that will help this make more sense.

When combat begins, the two degenerate humans are in C9 and D9; the kobolds are in C10 and D10; and the goblins are in C11, D11 and E10. The one in D11 is wearing a unique chest plate with some claws on it, apparently an emblem of rank.

Place yourselves wherever you like, as long as you are behind row 14; Rurik and Kellith start out off the map, but may consider themselves to be in A14 for the purposes of movement when their turns begin.

Any questions?

Male Human Fighter 1

I am sorry, Shisumo, I am having trouble with the map you're describing. Is there any way you could create the excel sheet and post it here so that we're all looking at the same thing?

Initiative (1d20+1=10)
Kellith will wait until a foe comes within 10' and then throw the axe. (Throwing Axe attack (1d20+2=22); Throwing Axe crit confirm (1d20+2=10); Probably not a crit; Throwing Axe damage (1d6+3=9)) He will then draw his rapier and take a 5' step to close with the target. Note that he is carrying his shield so his AC is 16.

Well, this isn't perfect - the letters and numbers went away - but maybe it will help some. I'd rather not have to do this every time, but I do know this is a confusing idea (and a confusing map to boot).

Battle map

It's via GoogleDocs, but hopefully you should be able to all see it...

Kellith is around the corner from the bad guys - you'll probably need to move out into the main room in order to have a target.

Tikk gets his own initiative, but isn't likely to attack until a) he's told to, b) he gets attacked, or c) he sees you get attacked. have you picked the tricks he knows? You can start with him trained, and he should have 7 total tricks.

ok, just to clarify, I'm in the room of the door I just opened right, so I haven't seen any of this yet, so my action is thus

"Tikk, who shouting?"

Moves out to the door way and looks to see who is causing all the ruches?

Sweet - I'm rubbish with Excel, or any spreadsheet stuff for that matter; thanks for the assist. If you login, you can modify the sheet and save the changes, so if everybody could put themselves on the map, that would be great...

As the goblin is flat-footed and within 30 ft., you get sneak attack damage as well.

male Human Paladin 1

Marcus readies his ransuer against the first creature that comes within range.

Initiative:1d20=17 AoO Attack/Damage and Redied Attack:1d20+3=18, 2d4+3=9, 1d20+3=5, 2d4+3=6
Marcus is added to the map.

Final initiatives:

Rurik 23
Uran 22
Kobolds 20
Goblins 17+
Marcus 17-
Sevegny 14
Kellith 10+
Lyria 10-
Tikk 8
Degenerate Humans 5

Rurik reacts with astonishing swiftness to the sound of danger, racing out the door and around the corner to fire his crossbow. The bolt takes the closest goblin in the throat, dropping it with a wet gurgle. Behind him, Uran moves into the room, still trying to determine what is happening.

Sidenotes: Rurik gets a +1 to attack the goblins. Uran can't share a space with Tikk unless she's riding him.

The kobolds react first, rushing toward the group, with the goblins right behind them. The first kobold, however, gets caught up in what looks like a primitive trap, a string that stretches across the hallway with bells attached on either end. They set up a loud clinging, and the little kobold has to waste a moment getting free of the string before it can keep going. This costs the kobold another move action. Nevertheless, the two move forward: the one that got caught in the string can only step up to threaten Rurik, but the other stabs at Marcus. The paladin easily knocks the spear thrust aside, however.

Flat-footed characters can't make attacks of opportunity before their first action without the Combat Reflexes feat.

The goblins attack next, primitive-looking swords, apparently forged from scrap metal, waving in their hands. One charges the priest, but its sword gets caught in the broad stones of the floor, causing the blade to snap clean off. The goblin stares in shock at the remains of its weapon before looking up with trepidation at Sevegny. The other closes with Rurik, but its strike - while keeping its weapon intact - nevertheless produces no effect whatsoever.

The map is updated.

Marcus is up - do you want to make your AoO as a standard attack against the kobold in front of you?

Male Human Fighter 1

Kellith backs out of the room, moving quickly to try to flank their opponents. He drops his throwing axe and draws the rapier in a smooth motion. He moves over to the more distant goblin and attacks. (Drop Weapon; Move action and draw weapon; reusing my previous rolls, because they were sweet. Rapier attack on G1: 1d20+4=24; Crit confirm 1d20+4=12; if it's enough here's the new rolls for damage: Rapier damage and crit damage (1d6+3=8, 1d6+3=8); if Goblin G1 drops I will Cleave to kobold K2 Cleave Rapier attack (1d20+4=24), Holy Crap! Crit confirm (1d20+4=22), Crit damage! (1d6+3=4, 1d6+3=8))

male Human Paladin 1

Forgot about the whole AoO when flat footed. Just use the attack like that.

Marcus takes a step back and very nearly cleaves the kobold in front of him in half, leaving room for Kellith's rush to follow. The paladin tries to carry the swing through to hit the goblin threatening Sevengy, but the blow goes wide.

Using Marcus' second rolled attack for the cleave attempt. Sevegny's turn.

The priestess jabs her spear at goblin menacing her.

1d20=19

1d6+1=5 damage

Sevegny's thrust pierces deep into the goblin's chest - though grievously wounded, it does not fall.

That is, until Kellith rushes in behind it and cuts it down with a quick flash of his rapier. Almost in the same movement, the warrior spins and does the same to the final goblin, stabbing straight through the heart.

Technically, the first shot wasn't a crit, but with only 1 hp left, the difference is purely academic.

I adjusted Kellith's position slightly so he'd still have a target for his cleave attempt. Lyria's up.

F Human Wizard 1

Lyria sees the kobolds and goblins fall down quickly and decides to keep her spells for a later encounter. Instead she loads her crossbow and shoots the only standing kobold left, hitting it in the chest. Grinning, she turns her attention to the humans, which are still far away.

Atk (1d20+1=19)
Damage (1d8+1=5)

Lyria has to take a step to the side to avoid cover (Rurik is tall enough to grant it to the kobold, but Tikk and Uran aren't), but there's still a shooting into melee penalty. However...

Lyria's shot manages to just slip past Rurik and over the kobold's leather armor, the bolt burying itself deep. The kobold falls with a wet cry, bleeding across the floor.

Tikk doesn't have any orders yet, so he delays until Uran tells him what to do.

Behind the kobold, the two degenerate humans - undismayed by the speed with which their companions fell - raise their clubs, crying "Protect the Temple!" and "Blood for the Beast God!" as they charge forward. Their clubs smash down with brutal force on Rurik who takes 8 damage and drops and Kellith who takes 11 damage. Their bestial roars echo through the room.

That was an actual charge, in case anyone is interested in a reduced AC. Rurik needs to make a stabilization check, and it is Uran's turn.

Male Dwarf Rogue 1(Favored Class: Wizard)

Rurik crumples to the floor under the force of the blow.

Stabilization: I didn't. Down to -2HP. On a side note, I checked and rogues are proficient with morningstars.

Giving orders to Tikk is a free action - what else you wanna do?

Tikk leaps over Rurik's fallen body to rip and shred at the human's legs.
