After a few panicked blinks Karrn can see clearly once more, while the alien venom again proves weaker than Sundered Heart's rage-fueled physiology.

Both saves made, SH regens 3 HP

Determined not to let his prey escape, the grell who has captured Sundered Heart tightens its grip. The entwined barbarian hears a rib snap under the pressure, but deftly catches the downthrust beak on the heavy wrought-gold torc that adorns his upper arm.

Sustain Grab (minor), Tentacle Grab (standard) 31 vs Fort, 12 damage. Venomous Bite (minor) misses. SH is yet again Bloodied.

On the western edge of the square, just outside the newly opened business offices of the Northern Breeze Trading Concern, the looming grell slaps suddenly at the ancestral Galad, now all too clear to its otherworldly senses. The blow lands hard, and the spirit dissipates soundlessly into thin tendrils of mist. A soft grunt of pain can be heard from the nearby Deva.

Active Perception Check (minor): 29, Tentacle Rake (standard) vs Galad's Spirit Companion: 29 vs AC, 24 damage. Galad takes 10 damage.

Madda:

Spoiler:
The wall in the alley is 5' high, climbable with a DC 5 check. The square beyond it is debris filled, counting as difficult terrain. more importantly, the wall would provide Cover, giving you a +2 bonus.

Keening triumphantly, Setil's marked foe shifts position and lashes out again, snaring the badly wounded Deva in a mass of barbed coils. Gabbling madly, the grell lunges awry, the envenomed beak snapping far too close for Setil's comfort.

Deep Speech:

Spoiler:
Dine! Dine! Fine! Fine! Fine! Retreat! Retreat! Meat! Must eat!

Shift to S16, Tentacle Grab (standard) 32 vs Fort, 13 damage. Setil is Grabbed (move action to attempt escape). Venomous Bite (minor) misses.

As the grell's mad gibbering ceases, the philosopher raises its voice in a horrid, thunderous croak, before unleashing a crackling bolt of brilliant - but errant - electricity at the entangled swordmage.

Deep Speech:

Spoiler:
KNAVE! SLAVE! FIND IT HERE, HE WANTS THE TEAR! KILL KILL KILL, YOU WILL!

Psychic Storm recharge: No. Lightning Lance misses Setil. Moves to Z16

UPDATED MAP

8.14: Galad: 57/76 HP
8.13: Madda: 59/88 HP, Slowed and -2 to attacks (save ends both)
8.13: Setil: 17/91 HP, Bloodied, Grabbed (move action to escape), Dazed (save ends), Slowed and -2 to attacks (save ends both), choose Random Melee target (save ends)
----------------------------------------------------
9.27: Karnn: 65/87 HP, Resist Force 10, Prone (Move Action to stand)
9.19: Sundered Heart: 50/101 HP, Regen 3, Bloodied, Grabbed (Move Action to attempt an escape)
9.17: Horrid Grell 2: -57HP, Grants Combat Advantage until Movement, +2 AC bonus
9.17: Horrid Grell 3: -129HP, Bloodied, Grants Combat Advantage until end of round 8.14
9.17: Horrid Grell 4: -94HP, Marked & Shielded, +2 AC bonus
9.16: Grell Philosopher: -96HP

I've half a mind to see how many more debuffs I can load poor Setil down with before he expires... or escapes. I guess he could hypothetically escape.

DM Grumpysauce

Spoiler:

On her turn, subject to change if Galad comes up with something special. Madda will try the following.

Shift to S5 - move
Tremor on G2. If that hits, G2 is prone and presumably has to drop Sundered Heart in the process - standard
Go wolfhound - minor

Tremor (Fort) v G2 (1d20 11=28, 2d8 8=16)

... and of course, try and make a save. What round would be complete without that?

Save v slow and -2 (1d20=11)

... and glory be, she actually does, so there's at least a chance of her taking a full set of actions at full strength if she can get through this next round.

Male Deva Swordmage

Setil uses what little strength he has remaining to break free of the tentacles wrapped around him. He staggers to the ground next to the dragonborn and manages to pull himself up to a fighting stance. He says to his newfound ally, "If I drop, try to prevent them from eating my brain."
Athletics 27 vs. Fort and shift to R14
And then he makes all of his saves! 20 vs. dazed; 20 vs. random; 10 vs. slowed

Setil wrote:

Woohooo!

Male Deva Shaman 2

Galad clutches at his shoulder as the spirit dissipates. "It will take more than that to defeat me." The spirit suddenly reappears next to the grell and lashes out once more.

Spirit in R6, Stalker's Strike(vs Fort): 23, 10 damage Also, remember that Madda can shift 1 square as a free action when she starts her turn adjacent to my spirit.

Karrn whips himself to his feet and looks for the large floating mass that blinded him. Finding that it moved he shouts "HEY GET OVER HERE AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN... eer, flying squid-brain!"

Knowing he can't get to the philospher he forms a marble of energy and launches it at the nearest grell

Chaos Bolt on G4, 1d20+13=27 vs Will; Damage 1d10+13=19 psychic damage. Rolled ever so secondary attack on G2, 1d20+13=15 vs Will, doubt that hit; Damage 1d6=1 psychic damage. Rolled even, so again another attack. This time on G3, 1d20+13=31 vs Will, not only that Crit (thanks to daggers as my implemments); Damage 1d6=6 psychic damage, plus 2d6=8 (high crit), and 2d6=8 (enchancement bonus). 22 damage total and I'm not done yet! Rolled even have to make another attack, but here's the bad part only Madda and Galad are in range... and on a roll of 3 it's Madda, 1d20+13=19 vs. Will, hope that misses; Damage 1d6=4 psychic damage

Rolling even I get a +1 to my AC.

You interest me strangely! Where is your spirit pal at the moment? Can't see it on the map.

IF Galad's spirit warrior is next to her...

Drawing strength from the ancient spirit drawn into being by Galad's power, Madda shifts away from the grell and grins evilly at the floating brain.

"Better luck next time." she mutters optimistically and crooks her finger at the ground beneath G2. "As for you - you're going down.... DROP! Sundered - get the hell out of there or kill or something. But do it nooowwwwwwww!" Her last word ends in a howl as she transforms into wolfhound again and leaps over the wall behind her. She can't fail the DC5. Athletics +9, Acrobatics +7.

The ground beneath the grell trembles and turns as though writhing away from the horror standing on it.

Triumphantly, she also throws off the last of the grell venom poisoning her mind.
Save v slow and -2 (1d20=11)

IF spirit pal isn't adjacent, then it's all the above bar the jump over the wall.

Tremor (Fort) v G2 (1d20 11=28, 2d8 8=16). If that's a hit, G2 is prone and presumably must drop Sundered Heart in the process.

And that is much, much more like it. Could the tide be turning? Karrn's latest effort won't affect her - Will 24. But she might have something to say about targeting allies who are already in trouble.

That is because he was dissipated on the bad guys turn, and I haven't updated the map since Galad resummoned it.

Galad's Ancestral fragment reappears in the nick of time, blade already whistling down at an angle the gloating grell was clearly not prepared for. The misty sword cuts deep, eliciting a croon of pain. Stern and silent, the spirit sets his blade to a defensive stance, buying time for the young druid to safely step away.

G3: -10 hp, free shift for Madda.

The ground beneath sundered Heart and his captor trembles and rolls at Madda's urging, cobbles skewing and bursting like a mouth of broken, wayward teeth. The grell, his movements constrained as they are by the dancing wind-demons, cannot avoid the seismic backlash and tumbles in a heap, a nest of bramble-like tentacles. Sundered Heart rolls cleanly free to a position of advantage, mayhem flashing in his eyes.

G2: -16 hp, Prone (grants CA to melee, +2 defenses vs non-adjacent Ranged attacks, -2 to attacks until standing). For flavor purposes, Q12 is now difficult terrain

Not far away, a desperate lunge twists Setil free of the grell's clutches. He shakes his head, summons the last shreds of his resolve and banishes the alien maledictions that afflict him as he limps slowly to stand back to back with the enraged dragonborn.

Nice batch of saves! Very heroic little snapshot as well, IMO!

Karrn, forced to settle for a lesser target than the Philosopher, watches as his summoned mote surges into the unexpecting grell, exploding in a wave of psychic chaos. The grell shudders, convulsion-wracked as the mote ricochets off to sail over the form of the tangled, writhing heap that is Sundered Heart's opponent.

G4: -19 hp, Bloodied. The Chaos Bolt miss on G2 prevents any further bounces, unfortunately (Power description specifically states that the secondary target is One creature within 5 squares of the target last hit by this power).

UPDATED MAP

9.19: Sundered Heart: 53/101 HP, Regen 3
9.17: Horrid Grell 2: -73HP, Grants Combat Advantage until Movement, Prone (Move Action to stand)
9.17: Horrid Grell 3: -139HP, Bloodied
9.17: Horrid Grell 4: -113HP, Bloodied, Marked & Shielded
9.16: Grell Philosopher: -96HP

9.13: Setil: 17/91 HP, Bloodied
----------------------------------------------------
10.27: Karnn: 65/87 HP, Resist Force 10, +1 AC until beginning of 10.27

Very nice comeback guys and gals! Sorry about the stolen crit, Laz. :(

Now that he is no longer hindered, Sundered Heart turns the full fury of his rage upon G2.

Rage Strike (9th level daily power expended) 1d20+15=32, Damage 5d10+10=49

If SH has an action point to spend then

Hp now at 56.

Kill Point plunges deep into grell flesh, releasing a stream of oily ichor as it emerges, twisting. Sundered Heart shifts the spear in his hands, slashing sidewise in another bloody arc. The grell screams and struggles to rise, shunting alien gasses to the oddly veined sacs that keep it aloft. With a spasming of the tentacles, it floats triumphantly upward... and Madda's conjured wind-demons explode outwards with a vast whoooomp, tumbling the closest pair of opponents to the rain-dampened cobblestones of Estered's Square.

Croaking madly, the grell sends a bevy of flailingly errant tentacles at Sundered Heart, desperately trying to regain its prey.

Nothin' like a panicked grell to upset all the DM's best laid plans, IMO! Rise from Prone (Move), Tentacle Grab (Standard), Action Point, Tentacle Grab (standard) again misses. G2: -68 hp, Bloodied, -2 AC. SH uses his Action Point and gains 3 HP. Note to Self: Apparently Standing up doesn't provoke in 4E.

Hooting furiously, the grell closest to Madda gathers itself and rises, searching fruitlessly for the proverbial thorn in its side, before floating closer to the protected sheepdog.

Rise from Prone (move), Perception check (minor), shift to T6. Note to Self: Standing does not trigger Spirit's Fangs, only leaving a square w/o shifting does.

Rising from the ground at the base of Estered's Monument in eerie silence, the grell lashes at the pale Deva with several cruel tentacles, striking unerringly. The deva spins, trailing a rain of crimson droplets, then topples soundlessly.

The sound of his bondblade hitting the cobblestones is discordant, inordinately loud among the other clamor in the square.

Rise from prone (move), Tentacle Rake (reach 2) vs AC 28, 20 damage. Setil: -3/91 HP, Unconscious, Dying (Death Saving Throws Failed: 0/3), Prone, Bloodied, Slowed and -2 Attack Rolls (save ends both) I'll need a Death Save, Setil. Your Swordmage Warding is also down until after Short Rest.

Voicing what can only be a congratulatory shriek, the philosopher unleashes a sizzling torrent of lightning at Galad, bobbing happily in the air as it connects.

Recharge: No. Lightning Lance (vs Reflex) 32, 10 Lightning damage and Blinded (save ends).

10.17: Horrid Grell 4: -113HP, Bloodied, Marked & Shielded
10.16: Grell Philosopher: -96HP

And things get interestinger!

Male Deva Shaman 2

Galad clutches his eyes, and shakes his beads in Setil's direction. Setil feels his wounds gently caressed, and the spirit stabs at the grell again.

Spirit of Life on Setil (last of my healing for the fight), move spirit to T5, and Defending Strike: 18, 10 damage, Saving Throw failed

From a great distance, Setil hears the faint beating of wings, feels a soft caress, as if of feathers brushing his wrecked body. He feels great weariness, a myriad of aches and hurts fading, lessening. He feels the raindrops cool on his forehead, and opens his eyes.

Setil: +23 HP, no Surge used. Still Prone, Bloodied, Slowed and -2 to Attacks (save ends). Spirit misses.

UPDATED MAP

9.13: Madda: 59/88 HP, +2 AC & Reflex due to cover, free shift as first action of 9.13
9.13: Setil: 23/91 HP, Prone, Bloodied, Slowed and -2 Attack Rolls (save ends both)

Can I shift back over the wall? I'm guessing probably not, but I need to ask. And does the jump back over cost anything more than the one square of movement?

Madda wrote:

Can't shift, but the jump is only a square worth of movement.

female Human Druid 11 (Adroit Explorer 1)

Springing lightly over the wall once more, Madda the dog snarls to get the grell's attention and chomps down hard on the nearest set of tentacles, nearly gagging on the flavour. Still snarling and hoping that her sudden attack will daze her foe, she darts away behind the nearest building, suppressing an urge to wipe her paws over her mouth. Once there, she concentrates hard and changes again. This time into a tiny black raven.

Natural weapons are not all they're cracked up to ...

Predator's flurry. On hit target is dazed to end next turn. Effect (regardless of hit) can also shift 3 and make secondary attack on different target. (1d20 13=25, 1d6 5=10). Can't make a secondary attack, but I guess I can still use the shift effect.

Move - over the wall
Standard - attack using Predator's flurry, which may or may not daze G2 and shifted 3 as part of the power
Free action - used Black Harbinger and to the end of the encounter can go from beast form to human or raven in any order as a minor action.

Leaping cleanly back over the low wall, Madda is a snapping maelstrom of teeth and fur, bewildering the grell with her furious assault. By the time it recovers, she is gone.

Madda: Which specific square are you headed to with your Shift3? If you're headed to a different one than P6, let me know so I can adjust the map. Also, it looks like you should be doing some additional damage: +1 vs Bloodied foes, and +3 enhancement bonus from your totem, for a total of 14 hp to G3.

P7 please. Forgot to mention that in the flurry of shape changing and good spot on the damage. I did forget to add the totem in for that attack. Amended.

Karrn:

Spoiler:
Good news this time! It looks like you forgot to roll your +4d6 crit damage for your implement. (PHBIIp204: 2d6 for the +2 enhancement, and 2d6 for the High Crit property of your Katar) I'll roll it if we need it to move on, otherwise feel free to roll and post!

Madda: Thanks! Map amended (may need a refresh.

Male Deva Swordmage

Setil blinks his eyes and sees the hilt of his sword, then everything comes back into focus. He grunts and rises to his feet, "Pelor's buisness here is not done yet." he says to nobody in particular. As the dragonborn makes a backswing with his weapon, Setil quickly touches it and it begins to glow as bright as the sun. And then Setil focuses on his body, regaining his poise and will to fight.

Stand; Weapon of the Gods on SH's weapon (Until the end of the encounter, all attacks made with the weapon deal an extra 1d6 radiant damage. When the weapon hits an enemy, the enemy takes a –2 penalty to AC until the end of the weapon wielder's next turn.); and use my second wind (+23 hp, +2 to all defenses).

DM

Spoiler:
I'm currently having computer issues that will hopefully be resolved in a day or three. I'm using a neighbor's computer right now. If my posting is holding up the game in any way feel free to npc me. Also, I accidentally rolled an attack that I couldn't make. Can I use it next turn? Here

Setil: No problem on either point.

4d6=13

DM, I have a splitting headache at the moment. If my turn comes up, can you just DMNPC SH for me? Thanks.

Karrn races towards the retreating philosopher, a broad grin on his youthful face. "Hey, you forgot about me!" he shouts, coaxing a ball of chaos into his grasp and hurling it with devastating accuracy.

The grell rocks with the impact, wheeling drunkenly and clacking its beak in either fury, pain or dismay. The lightning that crackles around it surges in response, hurtling into the young sorceror with a sizzling crack. The boy's hair stands on end and his vision flares and again goes eerily black.

Big crit from Karrn! G1: -36 hp and Bloodied

G1: Lightning Lance vs Reflex: 27, 17 damage and Blinded (save ends). Move to DD13

In response to the power called by Setil's unobtrusive touch, Kill Point begins to radiate a sunlike warmth in Sundered Heart's grasp. The dragonborn spins the mighty spear in his grip, howling his fury and delivering a strong backhanded blow to the badly wounded grell.

Minor: Activate Heart Strike stance. Standard: Howling Strike vs G2: 33 vs AC, 26 damage. Apologies for the weak damage :(

The grells in the center of the square squork in their horrible tongue, and both slap barbed tentacles at the weakest of their two foes: Setil the Deva, who stands calmly, untouched amid the profusion of tentacles, centering himself.

G2: Shift to P13, Tentacle Rake Reach 2 (standard) vs Setil misses. G4: Shift to R15. Tentacle Rake Reach 2 (standard) vs Setil also misses. Saving Throw vs most recent bout of Slow and -2 Attack (save ends) for Setil, who forgot earlier:6. Sorry.

On the western front the grievously wounded and exceedingly frustrated grell, having now misplaced both recent targets, screams its dismay and continues searching with its alien senses.

G3: Active perception check: 18. Not good enough for the grellish Blindsight to notice Galad's spectral companion. Poor grell.

female Human Druid 11 (Adroit Explorer 1)

Madda lets out an inadvertent croak of dismay as she sees the Blue Shields approaching.

They're not equipped to deal with this... - she casts wildly around to think of some way of protecting the brave, but hopelessly outclassed watchmen.

DM, can I have a ruling on OAs if Madda overflies the grells?

Based on the way the grells are built, the only way they would be able to OA you is if you fly directly overtop of one of their squares. If you gain more than 5' vertical separation, you're totally safe as well.

Note also that in Raven form, I believe you must fly 2 squares/round or crashland, unless you are able to hover. (DMGp47)

Karrn shakes his hands trying to get feeling back in them "Great... blind again"

"I AM REALLY GETTING ANNOYED WITH YOU SQUISHY!" he yells in the last direction of the grell.

"Knew I should used the killing blow when I had a chance" he pouts while figuring his next move

Male Deva Shaman 2

The spirit lashes out again, as Galad tries to clear his vision.

Stalker's Strike: 27, 19 damage, Failed Saving Throw

Another telling blow from Galad's ancestral remnant and the grell shudders, croaking balefully at the here-again-gone-again spirit.

Minor. Shape change to wolfhound
Standard. Charge G3

Pounce G3 (1d20 14=30 (Ref), 1d8 8=16)

Like a black shadow, Madda flies to flank G3, transforms with a shake of her head into her wolfhound form and unleashes herself on the grell, determined to end the aberration.

Madda the wolfhound streaks into the fray, leaping to snare a mouthful of tentacles. Slashing with tooth and claw she drags the grell to the ground with her, where it does little but spasm weakly, opening and closing its beak in a series of silent croaks, until it shudders once more, and is still.

Nice going folks. Three more to go!

I'm not sure if I need to make a perception check or not for the attack to really hit. If I do here it is 1d20+5-10=13, what a waste of an 18... - 10 to perception hurts!

Male Deva Swordmage

Setil ignores the grell at his back for the moment, and thrusts his sword into the one that the dragonborn has wounded. After that, Setil's body begins working at normal speed again.

Shift to Q14, Strengthen the Faithful: 30 vs. AC; 13 damage and Sundered Heart and myself may spend a surge and heal an additional 1 (24 for me). Save vs. Slow and -2 = 13

Uttering a solemn prayer to Pelor the swordmage moves swiftly back into the fray, sidestepping neatly to assist Sundered Heart against his foe. A precise lunge exploits a lapse in the grell's defenses, and is rewarded with a gout of oily ichor.

Added +2 to Setil's damage due to SH's Inspire Ferocity. Grell 2 looks like it is on it's last erm... legs?

Karrn: Yes, you'll need that perception check to enable you to guess the correct square for your attack, since the grell has moved from where you last saw him. For ease of modeling, given such a large relative distance between you and the grell's 36 stealth, we'll both roll d10's. If the results match, you've guessed the right square. Your target number is: 1d10=5.

Spoiler:
The roll link you posted was to a twitter account, so I searched Invisible Castle and found this instead: 1d10=8

and will proceed with your turn accordingly.

Brief Game Timeout!

Looks like my previous post got eaten... <sigh>

Apologies in advance, but could everyone please visit the discussion thread and either offer an opinion or an abstention before we move on.

Thank you.

"Blind or not I can still try to kill you!"

Karrn conjures another handful of raw chaos, forms it and sends it hurtling to where his grellish nemesis used to be. No sound of impact is forthcoming, neither is there an anticipated shriek of pain... the youngster stamps his foot on the rain-slick cobbles, then blinks in surprise as his sight clears.

"Figures..." he mutters, flashing his best scowl.

Chaos bolt misses. SH is up

Blue Shields and constables will begin trickling in every other round or so now, in singles or pairs. If we're still going by round 20, (ye gods, I hope not!) you can expect a significant force of Blue Shields deploying on the southern edge of the map.

I'm still a wolfhound unfortunately. Could someone with human speech tell the Blue Shields to stay clear of the Grell Philosopher in particular. OK. Outside of D&D that's probably not a sentence I'm going to be writing often. I shall relish the moment.

Spoiler:
Since I won't be around tomorrow and Setil is healthy again, if the philosopher hits me with a ranged attack I'd like to use dimension dodge to negate the hit and teleport next to the philosopher (DD12 if it hasn't moved).

Howlind Strike vs. G2 1d20+15=27, Spear Damage 1d10+14=16, Additional Damage from Howling Strike 2d6=10, Radiant Damage 1d6=4

"Yer dead!"

Sundered Heart's thrust is ferociously savage, Kill Point emerging in a spatter of thick ichor from the horrid creature's brain-analogue, accompanied by a burst of sunlight. Shucking the grell's dead weight with a shrug, the barbarian feels his temper surge, already looking for his next foe.

Hit. Very, very dead grell. Killing blow triggers Rising Fury (+3 dmg til end of next) automatically, and can also trigger Roar of Triumph if you wish, SH.

A quavering, wordless howl escapes the lone remaining warrior-caste grell, as it swats halfheartedly at Setil, neatly avoiding his surprised riposte, before moving unconcernedly into the roiling field of otherworldly energies to loom over the sightless Galad.

Tentacle Rake: misses. Move to V10, provoking OA from Setil, which misses.

Pleased by the timely arrival of a lackey, the Philosopher hurls another sizzling bolt of lightning at the beleaguered Shaman, who spasms in pain as the sparks dance over him. Hooting with perverse pleasure, the philosopher floats placidly into the swirling vortex of Far Realm reality.

Recharge: No. Lightning Lance (reflex) vs Galad. 22, 14 damage. Galad is Bloodied and remains Blinded (save ends). Move to AA12.

The Blue Shields move cautiously into the square, settling in at range and loosing a volley of crossbow bolts that fly unhindered into the night sky.

BS1: misses, BS2: misses

FYI, moving into a Psychic Storm zone (purple squares) subjects normal folk to a Daze (save ends). Currently 3 zones up, centered at R14, T11, AA12

Blue squares are Galad's Hawk's Wind zone, letting you use a Move action to shift 4 squares, ignoring difficult terrain (but not the storms)

Can I raise a question about how you all think the following should be used? Spoilered for not-breaking-the-mood purposes.

Spoiler:

Feast of Fury Beast form, implement, primal; melee touch, one creature
+13(Ref), 2d8+8
Effect - make a secondary attack (+13(Ref))on target other than primary target. 1d10+8 damage. Attack deals additional 5 damage if primary attack hit.

The effect is that you can make a secondary attack, but there's no indication of what the secondary attack can be on. Can I use it to attack G4 and then make a secondary attack on G1 even if G1 is not adjacent? Obviously I'm thinking of using it, but I don't want to waste the thing.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

My thoughts

Spoiler:
The secondary attack has to be on one creature with in range, that being melee. So unless you have reach of some kind your only option for the secondary attack would be, depending where you moved to attack from, Galad or yourself (being that the attack clearly states "One creature other than the primary".

Kinda like I could target myself with my secondary chaos bolt if need be

After a bit of digging, I found this:

Spoiler:
PHBp56:"A melee power that has a range of "touch" can be used against any target you can reach. (Some creatures larger than Medium size have a reach of more than 1 square.)"

Thus, I would tend to agree with Laz.

Activate Roar of Triumph.

"I have the power!"
