U.K. Parliament dissolved, general election to be held 6th May.

Am I reading this right? The equivalent of dissolving the entirety of the U.S. Congress to be followed by a general legislature election in one month's time? O.o

Originally there was no fixed limit on the length of a Parliament, but the Triennial Act 1694 set the maximum duration at three years. As the frequent elections were deemed inconvenient, the Septennial Act 1715 extended the maximum to seven years, but the Parliament Act 1911 reduced it to five. During the Second World War, the term was temporarily extended to ten years by Acts of Parliament. Since the end of the war the maximum has remained five years. Modern Parliaments, however, rarely continue for the maximum duration; normally, they are dissolved earlier. For instance, the 52nd, which assembled in 1997, was dissolved after four years.

The current Parliament had to be dissolved by the first week off June

The real question is, off course, does anyone outside the UK actually care who is running our country

Why do people put so much extra s$*& in their coffee these days? Why can't they just drink it black, or if they want to make it taste bad, put a little milk and/or sugar in it?

I can't stand black coffee. All I put in mine though is a pinch of Splenda and a tiny splash of milk.

Black is how I prefer my coffee. My favorite is Gevalia's Antico Caffé Greco blend; I get three pounds each month. It is unsurpassed superiority.

Aside from Pathfinder, my only major monetary indulgence is high-grade coffee. Preferably Grounds for Change Dark Roast, or if I'm feeling especially wealthy, Café Britt Fair Trade Shade-Grown.

Mainly because most coffee is basically burnt, requiring flavoring to make it palatable and cooling (milk or equivalent) to make it drinkable.

The whole "let's burn the s##~ out of our beans to make them taste better" thing has got to go. F%+~ Starbucks. There's a local coffee place in Savannah that serves two kinds of coffee: regular (which is quite good, actually; I'm going to miss it), and "dark," which is what all the Starbucks-oids drink. The "dark" coffee, without any flavoring, tastes rather like burnt bacon.

You know, I'm not to thrilled about the Church's actions in the hole perv priest scandal. Something definitely needs to be done. I'd say the best thing is for Benedict to step down (if possible) and turn himself over to a responsible authority for trial - perhaps the Italian courts.

That being said, I think this guy Dawkins is an ass, and an attention seeking jacknut who needs a good b$+@% slap to the face.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. Whatever zealous, anti-religion mission this guy or Hitchens or any other militant athiest might be on, making a scapegoat of any religious leader (even one as prominent and implicated as the Pope) isn't going to do anything to prove that all religions is inherently "wrong" as his book argues.

I tend to agree. but in the end if he does do it I will be plesed. Only becuse covering up the molestation of a child and then instead of condemning, and turning over the pedophile to the authorities you try and shelter and deny all charges. Well thats just inhuman. I do apologize to all those catholics out there, but pedophilia is one of those things that makes me sick to my stomach, I have a young nephew and niece, and if anyone did tht to them I'd be a murderer. I'm not a violent person but I honestly would even if it was priest.

Word. The Catholic Church has to deal with pedophile priests ravaging their reputation, and the atheists have to put up with Dawkins and his dogmatic and hysterical crusade. If there was some sort of Atheist-Pope, I'm sure Dawkins would have been transferred quietly to that research station in Antarctica that's out of contact with the rest of the world for 11 months a year...

I think they're fine with it. Pedophiles come in every color.

And in fact all the Catholics I know want the guy to resign.

I agree, and it's one of the things that has made me stopped practicing. I just don't trust the church. Individual priests - maybe. But not the church as a whole.

+1 without a doubt

This is just my opinion, and I don't intend to offend anyone's beliefs, but on the whole, the Roman Catholic church is responsible for more human suffering than any single cause in the past 1500 years. The institutional hypocrisy is beyond staggering. It's amazing that such an organization has been allowed to remain such an integral part of so many societies, let alone not collapsing under the weight of its own crapulence.

I'm not religious in any way myself, but I don't identify at all with the neo-atheistic line of thought either. Each of us has to pick our own path through this world, and belief in a higher power obviously helps some people make sense of the absurdity of existence. I don't have enough time to crap all over someone else's ethos, and I expect the same from others. The thing that makes the whole catastrophe worse is the *Satanic* deceit the Church employs, has employed, and will employ--among other tenses--to cover its ass. I say Satanic in the historical sense of a profound evil being perpetrated under the guise of monolithic morality and ethical orthodoxy.

Once again, I have no intention to offend and I'm sure my own moral outrage is a mere shadow of that of the betrayed faithful.

You should read Dawkins' books. On numerous occasions, he himself has blown that particular accusation out of the water. So have Jeff Smith-Luedke, L. Aron Nelson, and Phil Hellenes, for that matter.
