1d20+4 perception
Erizi will go back to the mouth of the cave for watch, but will not go inside.
I had Erizi at the mouth of the cave as per your post above. That may be where your confusion comes from. the gnoll pack is fifty feet outside the cave and Erizi is leading the rest, not attacking from the far side.
Perception check DC14 (Erizi) and DC28 (the rest)
Over to Shimei, Norn and Livvy. Then back round to Erizi again.

Norn
Norn is gone, headed left and into the almost darkness.

OK. I remember posting that, but I was thinking in the area of the cave mouth, not really there...but no biggie. I'll go with it, he would spend a lot of time there with a suspicious eye on the prisoner anyway.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21 Perception

Erizi the Landless |

"Come back in, make them come to us!"
"Do you mean come back in and let them trap us in there with one of their tribe, until the whole tribe gets here"? "I don't think so". "Besides I hear movement over there", Erizi nods with his head in the direction he heard the noise.
"If anything you should all come out, and we make a retreat until the odds are better".

Livvy Goldenscale |

Does Rova have an initiative roll yet?
"I have to agree with Erizi. I don't want to start a protracted battle in a hole. We need it at our backs and we can retreat into it, but we need to make them pay for that retreat. Rova, it's time to prove your allegiance to the pack. My pack. Come with me. Quietly."
After noting which way Norn disappeared, Livvy opts to move stealthily out of the cave in the opposite direction. Noting where Erizi is as best she can and listening for threats, she will prepare to conjure up some Dancing Lights. Whispering, "Rova, now we hunt. Quietly, where are they? Where would you expect them to be?"
With her speed and moving stealthily, she can't be far from the cave entrance.
Stealth 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Perception 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

Shimei of Merraketh |

Shimei crouches against the left wall of the cave. He scoops up a small stone and asks, "Bow-father, grant us light that we may better hunt these walking hyenas." He throws the stone out into the rocks, hoping that he doesn't accidentally shine a light on his allies.
Cast light on the rock. Try to throw it 70 feet straight out from the cave, hopefully at least 40' from Erizi and Shimei's best guess at Norn's position. Since I go before Livvy she ought to stay out of the area of effect.
If you need a roll for the throw,
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 (added BAB and dex)
Hopefully that creates a nice kill zone that splits them up and if they rush the cave they'll be silouhetted.
Light:
You can only have one light spell active at any one time. If you cast this spell while another casting is still in effect, the previous casting is dispelled. If you make this spell permanent (through permanency or a similar effect), it does not count against this limit. Light can be used to counter or dispel any darkness spell of equal or lower spell level.

Nombir follows Shimei, making sure the others are following. When they reach the ambush site he moves to the position Shimei allocates for him. Once there he whispers "Abaddar, bless our fight against evil this night and protect my friends"
Nombir casts bless on the party
Wrong! Nombir has used at least one more spell that I can find straight away. Mate, its up to you to know how many spells you have used. Use the profile to record them and what I do is italicise them when used. Since that ambush fight and waayyy before Nombir has had no rest. So now I'll rule he is on zero first level spells (I'm not going to waste time checking all the thread back for 500+ posts) and zero channels (something which Nombir has used alot). After this fight IF Nombir manages to get about three or so more hours sleep then he can prepare a full complement of new spells and channels.

Erizi the Landless |

Assuming the first Gnoll went to doggy heaven, Erizi will turn his attention to the pesky hyena Did the Hyena miss last time? I noticed he rolled a 20 which I think is a miss if you start at 1% or is High a miss?

Shimei of Merraketh |

In the hopes of heading off any possible animosity, I skimmed Nombir's posts for spell use. I found the following, since we renewed spells yesterday morning:
cure light on Shimei during flind attack at monastery
bless before ambush of the gnoll patrol
cure light on Zaid just now,( burning another spell )
and 2 (?) channels. (I might have counted one twice while going back and forth.)
As a 2nd level cleric with 16 wis Nombir gets 2 + 1 first level spells and gets a bonus spell for wisdom. His 13 wisdom gives him 4 channels.
To be perfectly fair, Nombir was first level when he prepped spells. We leveled after that.

Yep, the hyena missed and thank you Shimei. Brett is a plain speaker when he runs games and I know he understands that language. I doubt I'd speak so bluntly unless he was such a friend. If we don't get this sorted now then in a few levels time the problem will become more acute. Nevertheless Nombir has his domain spell and 2 channels left until he gets that rest. I'll put this round together when the kids have left me alone.

No worries FW and thanks Shimei. It seems so long ago that I used the light spell I had forgotten all about it! FW is right I should keep track, but I tend to post in a hurry and use my memory, so age must be creeping up on me.

Livvy Goldenscale |

Bit frazzled with real life and my social secretary has several plans for this weekend, including last night. Somehow DnD didn't figure in them. Anyway I hope to have better luck tomorrow. May even get my hands on the Bestiary 2.
Funny. My social secretary keeps forgetting D&D on my calendar, too. Perhaps they trained at the same school...

Livvy and Rova head off to the right down the slope and out of sight of the cave entrance. Rova pulls the light-challenged halfling along below the level of the fighting heading towards the rear.
"They be behind us soon."
He pulls out the greatsword as he crouches. Then points into the shadows, towards the two large rocks. They have been highlighted by a sudden lofted light from Shimei. It doesn't quite reach the back end, but does back light Erizi. -10 to hit a spot 70 feet away, so Shimei's stone doesn't quite make the distance.
Miss chance for Erizi 1d100 ⇒ 44
Just as the earthbreaker clips the hyena, almost crushing its head. But the large dog fights on, snapping at his leg but its back leg flops and collapses under the movement. The hyena wobbles back to its feet and stares up at the pit-fighter.
Attack on Erizi 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7, damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6, miss chance 1d100 ⇒ 12
Shimei's light spell creates a pool of light on the large rocks, but no one can see any gnolls. There is plenty of other cover in the shadows. Maybe they are hidden behind those large rocks?

This morning in game time was months ago in RL. It's really hard to keep track over so long a time, no matter how good your memory.
"Dog, stay, " Shimei commands in a low voice. Bow in one hand, morningstar in the other, Shimei circles out of the cave toward Erizi. He stays low and dodges behind rocks to stay hidden and protected from javelins.
I want to stay clear of the light and get into position to watch Erizi's back, within about 20' of him.
Perception on the way, 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Stealth 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

Its not daylight yet, nowhere near for at least another two hours. That is how Zaid has almost finished his hour learning spells. I have a picture in my head of where everyone is and I'll try to convey that when I wrap up the round. Imagine any lefts and rights are based on looking from the cave entrance towards Erizi and then the two large rocks, each the size of a wagon.
Nombir and Zaid stay in the cave entrance, using the rock at one side to provide cover and watch the shadows. Now that Shimei's torchlight has landed the moonlight and starlight vision is masked.
Perception check DC13 Norn
Perception check DC19 Everyone else
Shimei heads out directly towards Erizi, using the available cover but there is not so much before him. However he takes up a position central to everyone without realising it.
Livvy and Rova to go. He will do whatever she wants.

![]() |

Livvy
Just need something from Livvy then its Erizi. Norn you can still act too, in case I didn't make myself clear.

Shimei of Merraketh |

Nombir and Zaid stay in the cave entrance, using the rock at one side to provide cover and watch the shadows. Now that Shimei's torchlight has landed the moonlight and starlight vision is masked.
Oops. May have been a tactical error. Of course the gnolls' vision might be masked also. Maybe it will work out.
Shimei crouches behind a rock with his bow in his left hand and his morningstar in his right. He peers into the surroundings, epecially the left, trying to see or hear something.
And I've lost where we are in the initiative count.

Erizi the Landless |

"Bad Dog"! Screams Erizi swinging at the beast again.
Tempest Miss Chance (1d100=59)
Assuming this takes out the mangy mutt, and Erizi sees no apparent targets, he will look for somewhere to take cover, and catch his breath, before beginning to call out the cowards
The sweat obviously stinging his already tired eyes.

Right, Brett came over this weekend and Nombir's profile is much more useful now. And Shimei, I noticed that you missed the first Perception check but this is for something else.
Livvy/DM
End of the Round
Zaid and Nombir watch from the entrance to the cave with the priest shouting out that there is movement to the left.
Shimei is in the centre of the group, just twenty feet behind Erizi who is about to smash the hyena into the ground with a sickening neck crack.
Shimei
Erizi after his massive blow heads for the shadowy cover of the large rocks ahead and ducks between the gap, hunched and in full darkness to everyone now.
Norn
Okay, I wont do all this fight in such conditions but this is a gnoll speciality and they are hunting one of you at the moment. Erizi has gone for this round, now it is Nombir and Zaid to act (my gnolls have acted too).

![]() |

Zaid's spell lights up the rock and scrub to the left of the cave, and everyone's eyes are drawn to the pair of gnolls stood stock still with raised javelins. They both scatter further to the left out of sight and away from the party dropping out of sight in the darkness.
The dancing lights create a bobbing weaving set of torches that throws the rocks and other shapes into strange reliefs and odd patterns. Briefly Shimei and Erizi see a large and small shape waver and duck away beyond the two large rocks that the pitfighter rests against. Again they hide in the night.
Shimei to act. Then Livvy and back round to Erizi only after them. Ta.
