"We've got maybe one hand of rooms to go. It won't take long. Then we'll roast the baboon."

Nice twist, Scranford.

With so little of the monastery to explore I can't see stopping for an hour or more to cook.

FW, when you're hungry it's all good.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn will take a shortsword, A heavy crossbow with 20 bolts, a backpack and some rations.

Make a list of general equipment and weapons and run it by me. I am sure that the Lady is well prepared. You each have a maximum of 100 gold to spend on top of what you already have or wear, and also the priest Father Zastoran will hand over 2 potions of cure light wounds and 2 scrolls of cure light wounds after Garavel twisting his arm a little.
Once that is done then we can throw you into the fi-, investigating.

Following Norn's lead: A dagger, quarterstaff, light crossbow with 20 bolts, backpack, waterskins, rations.

"Lets hope we can search the rest of this place before it gets dark, then we'll try the baboon courtesy of Shimei!"

The Exchange

Norn/Livvy

Garavel leads the two halflings out into the hot desert and heads east towards Kelmarane. He crosses several ridges and then the ground opens out below him showing the ruined monastery.

He takes out his scimitar when he sees the black smoke spiralling up into the sky. "It looks like they have started to clean out the place. Not sure how Sarenrae would feel about burning her church nave. Maybe that is just what see would want. Let's go."

He starts down the slope towards the burning nave.

Perception checks from Norn and Livvy, if you get 15+ you can just see the party heading into the eastern part of the monastery away from the nave.

Garavel moves well but still he is sweating from the exertion as he climbs down.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Perception

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

"Is that them there?" Norn asks while pointing in there direction.

The Exchange

"Yes well spotted Norn, you have the eyes of an elven archer there. Now let's catch up with them before they cook something else."

He changes direction and heads towards the eastern end of the monastery, calling out when he nears the ruins, "Shimei! Erizi! Nombir! I have two new recruits for you."

It seems a bit late to bother with the Perception check, so I won't.

Livvy takes it all in as they cross the ridge and first spy the monastery, but she misses the movement below.

"Oh, good eyes, Norn!"

Male Human Cleric 2

Nombir turns his head towards the direction of Garavel's voice. "Everybody stop!". "Look over there, it's Garavel with a couple of halflings, or two well armed children" says Nombir chuckling. "We had better see what he wants. "Shimei and Erizi, please keep watch".

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

"Typical, he forgot about me."

Shimei looks to the east and sees nothing manacing in the statue hall. "Dog, watch, " he commands. Then he turns to watch the approach of Garavel and the halflings. The dog sits down and begins scratching for fleas behind its left leg and ear.

When the distance has closed sufficiently to almost conversational, the halfling with the quarterstaff (probably more like an eighth-staff, but... gives the party a big wave and says, "Hi, I'm Livvy!"

Erizi looks at the two approaching halfings with curiosity, but sternness. He was just getting used to his new friends and now there were more.

He made the mistake once of underestimating halfings and it almost cost him his life in the arena. They are very hard to catch. Still he has heard many rumors about their culinary talents.

"Did you bring spices", Erizi hollers out at the approaching group, as visions of ginger infused Baboon flank with pepper sauce flash through his head. (There were benefits to being a famous gladiator)

Norn just momentarily stops in her tracks of all the greetings she could have received that was undoubtedly the strangest "Do we look like cooks to you?" she hollers back

The Exchange

Garavel grins at the interchange, wide and bright with those lovely white teeth.

"Erizi, this is Norn and his friend, Livvy as you may gather they are not cooks and do not have spices. But they are here to help you. Norn here is a Pathfinder much like you, Zaid and you, Nombir.

He looks around and then points out Zsithreminni and Shimei when he gets a chance. "These two wish to help the Lady. How does it go, is the monastery ours yet? Can I tell her to bring the camp tomorrow?"

Then the warrior points upwards at the large smoke signal from the nave. "I see that you have been busy, but I expect that the gnolls of Kelmarane will notice that too. I'd expect visitors."

Shimei waves once at the new arrivals. Then, remembering he is supposed to be watching looks behind him. The dog is gone. When Shimei looks back at Garavel and the halflings, the mangy, flea-bitten yellow canine is approaching them crouched low, and sniffing at their legs.

In response to Garavel's query, Shimei shrugs, "We have a hand of rooms left to check." He points toward the smoking nave. "There were more of the pugwampis."

Shimei almost bursts out to Nombir, "I thought the fire was a bad idea," but controls himself. They must maintain face before Garavel, not squabble. In truth Shimei hadn't imagined that the fire was an unintended signal to the gnolls. He had only worried about collateral damage to the structure and party. Very good, FW. I missed that.

Livvy grins and begins searching through a couple of pouches at her belt, but shakes her head 'no' and shrugs.

As the dog approaches, she starts "small talking" and crouches down to offer a tiny hand. "C'mere, boy, we're friends, just smaller. C'mere, I won't hurt you..." No Handle Animal ranks, just being friendly.

Disappointment clear on his scarred face Erizi turns and resloutly heads back towards the Monastery. "Well I guess we'd better get to in then". "If we're going to have company I'd rather have it coming at us from only one side". He then begins to trudge back towards the old building. "Besides the sooner we finish the sooner we can eat".

"Pleasure workin with ya Al" Norn says shacking Zaid's hand

Livvy steps up and takes his hand, also. "Zah-eed? I'm Livvy." Looking at herself and Norn, she asks, "How big is an annoying little pug-whatty?"

Would it be visibly obvious that Zaid is a spellcaster?

Male Human Cleric 2

Nombir nods his head at the halflings "I'm Nombir, servant of Abbadar. Welcome to the party". Nombir knows that he needs to respect small creatures after fighting the Pugwampis, but he has to ask " with respect, what can you do to help us? We are just about to search the eastern rooms of the monastery, so we need to know really. There are lots of baboons and dangerous little creatures called Pugwampis in this place. As for the fire, well that's my fault I'm afraid. It seemed a good idea at the time". Nombir looks knowingly at Shimei! "We'll just kill the Knolls sooner rather than later".

Nodding, Livvy replies, "A very good question. We actually didn't come here intending to join your group, but our group was ambushed by gnolls and your employer graciously has offered us the option of joining your efforts or returning whence we came -- and two of us, alone, in this desert, does not appeal. Besides, we owe the gnolls a thing or two.

"As for what I can do, only a little. I can do this," as she conjures up a set of four lantern-lights. She keeps them low to the ground, "No need to draw even more attention to ourselves, right?" and douses them after showing that she can control their movements. "If it's dark in the area you need to search, I think that would help.

"Do you know of pug-whatty things are bothered by acid? I can conjure some of that up, too, and throw it at them. Only a little at a time, but sometimes that's enough to cause someone to flee. Anyway, I have a few tricks like that. Norn has other tricks, don't you, my friend?"

French Wolf:

Spoiler:
I guess I should ask before I get carried away. I had another halfling sorcerer in another game and to avoid abuse of the Dancing Lights, we opted to require a move action to change the "programmed" motion of the lights. So I could tell them to move at walking speed forward and they would continue without any actions on my part, but if I wanted to stop them or change their direction of travel, it would require an action on my part. Thought I'd bring it up now so you could rule on it -- it's likely to be a major part of my contribution for this level.

"They might be bothered by the acid, but I found it very difficult to get my spells to hit them. Something always seems to go wrong."

"Oh." The halfling 'caster looks thoughtful. "So how did you handle the ones you've encountered? Do you think there are more?"

Erizi has turned and is heading towards the Monastery. "Less talk and more action"! "Zaid told you they are hard to hit...just like some of your type I have battled before". "We are not here to write a book about them, we're here to clear out this building". "Talking, takes too long, as we must wait for the occupants to die of boredom". He then turns and starts towards the building again, a little embarrassed at the amount of words he just used. He will have to go silent the rest of the day to equal things out.

FW, Garavel wouldn't be carrying arrows would he?

The dog slinks lower and closer and sort of bumps its head up into Livvy's hand then jumps back about half its length. It repeats the experiment a couple times, each time jumping less far back. Then it settles under her arm. Shimei looks annoyed at the animal.

Livvy Goldenscale wrote:

Shimei replies gruffly, "Just keep trying. Even the tortoise can reach its goal."

"We cleaned out their big nest. There may be a few others around. Erizi is right. We should get moving again."

Female Halfling Rogue 3

"Okay then" Norn replies jogging to pass Erizi "You want me to have a look ahead?"

Erizi turns to answer the halfling as she speaks, then out of the corner of his eye see's Norn fly by on the other side. Well at least that one seems eager enough...Erizi thinks to himself, as he follows the stranger at his own pace

To the dog: "Yes, that's a good boy." To Shimei, she says, "Your friend seems nice. If the key to pugs is to try, try again, I can do that. Thanks for the tip!" She smiles at the man.

Taken a little aback by the gruff Erizi, she starts, "But we have to talk if we are to know how..." Seeing Norn jog ahead, she shrugs and starts walking, probably alongside Zaid or Nombir.

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

"Actually, I am here to write a book about them." Zaid whispers to Livvy as they follow Eziri back to the monastery. "Or at least the book I am writing will have something to say about them. I find them to be interesting creatures, even though they are evil and disgsuting."

Zaid Al-Mahaudin wrote:

"Oh, how fun!" She's obviously thrilled to be in on the secret and makes a little 'locking key' motion over her lips and winks at the scholar as she walks alongside.

Livvy Goldenscale wrote:

Yes and No, Zaid doesn't wear armour or carry any major weapons, but then nor does a monk.

FW, what about my question? Is Garavel packing arrows or not?

Male Human (Keleshite) Wizard (conjurer) 2

Zaid wears a white keffiyeh with a beige turban covering his head. He doesn't advertise the fact he is a spellcaster, so it is probably not immediately obvious. He basically looks like what he says he is: a scribe and a chronicler.

The Exchange

Livvy

Spoiler:
That is fine by me. I hadn't thought about it before so its good to have a different perspective.

Zaid Al-Mahaudin wrote:

Ah, but Zaid's already told her "his spells" had trouble against teh pugwampis, so regardless of how he looks, he is now a kindred spirit for her. ;-)

Male Human Cleric 2

Nombir addresses the party. "Ok lets move out". "Livvy, may I suggest that you walk with Zaid and I please?". Nombir turns and moves after Erizi, smiles at Livvy and says "don't worry about Erizi, talking's not his strong point, but he's a fine warrior and good to have around".

The Exchange

Shimei of Merraketh wrote:
FW, what about my question? Is Garavel packing arrows or not?

Keen PC's or what? I feel very lucky all of a sudden. Garavel hands over a box of 20 bolts and a quiver of 20 arrows.

Garavel hands over the equipment. As everyone heads indoors following Erizi and Norn, the warrior turns back towards Almah's camp. It may be a while before anyone else notices that Zsithreminni isn't with the adventurers any longer. She must have gone with Garavel.

French Wolf

Spoiler:
Yeah, with 3.5 rules, it wouldn't really matter, but in Pathfinder, I could cast it as a cantrip every round -- I could potentially have nine active spells and the ability to modify it as a free action is a little much, we felt. By putting some cost in the act of changing the motion, it seemed much more reasonable.

On the other hand, I'm unlikely to abuse it, so if you don't care, I don't care.

The Exchange

Livvy

Spoiler:
My only concern would be when the cantrips get abused. But I haven't seen that is any games yet, although it has come close a couple of times. Lets wait and see.

Reposted - The Monastery

Soon the party are back where they started, next to the winged statue of a woman near to their fight with the baboons and pugs. They are all just outside a one time dormitory. Ten bunk beds can be seen in various stages of disrepair, they fill the room with a central walk between them leading through an archway at the far eastern end. The place is dark thanks to the roof being in good condition still, but the door appears to be covered in moss and mushrooms. There is a door in the western way which probably goes straight back into the mess hall where everyone rested before.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

"Any of these rooms not been searched yet?" Norn asks looking around

The Exchange

The dormitory room described above and its far door is part of an area that the party haven't adventured in. Unless that was an rp question only?

Male Human Cleric 2

"Let's look in the dormitory area. Somebody check for traps and the rest of us need to be ready. Erizi and I will go in first with Zaid and Livvy next. Somebody keep an eye on the rear, just in case!". Nombir draws his greatsword and waits for the door to be checked.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

Norn glances around for traps and enemies

Perception

1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21

The Exchange

None visible, the only thing that is out of place is that the door ahead is festooned with grey lichen and greenish lumps of fungi, they seem to run all around the door itself like glue oozing from a crack.

The place is quiet.

Female Halfling Rogue 3

"Looks clear" Norn shouts back to the others as she slowly proceeds in

Male Human Cleric 2

"Hang on a moment Norn, does anybody know about fungi? This stuff looks odd to me, but it may be nothing"
