As the PC Sable Company Marine in tbug's CotCT campign I've run into issues communicating with the rest of the party on the ground when I'm aloft on my hippogriff, Dagger. Any spell we can think of has either too short a range (Message) or is not targeted well enough to serve the purpose (Whispering Wind).
This seems like it would be an issue for the Marine patrols as well. Trying to communicate between hippogriff riders in the air would be just as difficult.
Right now we've had to resort to a primitive system of sign language/semaphore. In a world where magic is so prevalent, you'd think there would be a solution to this.
Any suggestions? Is there already a system in place for the Marines that I'm unaware of?
Thanks!!

The 5th level wizard spell Rary's telepathic bond is pretty nifty, you must be close when you cast the spell, but after that the spell let's you communicate telepathically with the entire party at any distance. There is a lesser version of this spell in spell compendium which allows for telepathic communication between the caster and one other creature. For a non-magical solution simple signals using a mirror, colored flags, flaming arrows or sunrods could also work. For a slower solution the wizard could use a flying familiar or Majenko (if the pc's rescued him) as a messenger.

Something my party had discussed at one point, is to have Majenko riding with the ranger/marine, and passing messages back and forth between him and the wizard ... once the wizard gets his Improved Familiar Feat and bribes Majenko into a long term relationship.

Psionics is great at this kind of thing (the level 1 power Mindlink and using a psicrystal to pass messages both work well). I suspect those aren't an option in your game, though.
Note that the Expanded Psionic Handbook also has a spell called Lesser Telepathic Bond; it works the same as Rary's Telepathic Bond, but it only links the caster to a single target instead of a group.

Yep, that's the spell I mentioned earlier. It's reprinted in the spell compendium. I agree that psionics is great for these things, but isn't allowed in all Campaigns.
