Quick question:
Am I correct in the assumption that in Pathfinder a Keen weapon doubles its threat range - So a Keen Rapier would possibly crit on a roll of 15 to 20 ?
Any suggestions for tweaking out a Rapier, giving it more bang for the buck ?
A keen weapon does double the threat range of a weapon. For a rapier, which normally threatens on 18-20, a keen rapier will threaten on 16-20. Although a keen weapon must have at least a +1 enhancement bonus, that bonus does not apply to the threat range, it has to come up 16 or higher on the die.
As far as tweaking out a rapier, you can add other special properties to it, eventually. You would not be able to do so right now, as you're only allowed to buy an item worth 1/2 your level allowance, and a +1 keen rapier (to be keen, it has to have at least a +1 enhancement) costs 8,000 gold. Keeping under the 1/2 value guideline, you would need to be 9th level before you could up the value of the rapier by adding another property to it (a +3 equivalent weapon costs 18,000 gold).
You can tweak the amount of "oomph" you weapon deals by smartly choosing and applying feats and buffs, however. You can also buy boost items that will enhance your strength and/or dexterity.
Edit: corrected wrong information about costs of adding magical properties.

Ok let me get this straight...
A weapon with a +1 enhancment and an additional enhancement would cost 8,000 gp because it effectively has +2 bonus and +2 costs 8,000.
Or would it cost 2,000 for the +1 and and additional 2,000 for the sencodary enhancement totaling 4,000.
If the top is the case a couple of us need to rework weapons.
Edit:
Also how much extra would a bow made of horn cost. They are possible. They work very well actually. Looking into my deity, his symbol is a horn bow. It makes this so much easier when your weapon doubles as your holy symbol.

The former is correct. A +1 weapon with a +1 equivalent enhancement would be the equivalent of a +2 weapon in terms of cost.

sorry about the delay guys. I've been having IP issues, but they seem to be ironed out. I'll post my spells, and equipment tonight, (Tomorrow at the latest), but don't wait on me. This wandering Bard could show up whenever its convenient.

I'd say it would depend on what kind of horn you're wanting it made from. Ivory is more costly than, say, antler horn from deer, bison, sheep or cattle. If you wanted it made from some of the more common horn, I would say it would cost 1.5 times the normal amount. Ivory would cost about three times the normal amount.

By the way, everyone, when buying magical armor and weapons, you only have to pay the cost of the weapon itself and the enchantment. The masterworking cost is already figured into it. You only have to pay the masterworking cost is you buy the item and have it masterworked to be enchanted later. But if you're buying it pre-enchanted, then the masterworking is part of the whole enchanting process.

![]() |

I take it that cost would be aplied before adding enhancements or would it multiply the cost of the enhancemnet too?
IE
would a +1 Horn Composite bow cost 2150 (1.5(100)+2000) or 3150(2100x1.5)?BTW. I'm ready to go.
The cost only affects the price of the base item itself. The enchantment cost is unaffected, so it would just cost you 2150.

A note on locale:
The main points of interest at this point in the game are Drellin's Ferry, which is located on the river south of the town marked on the map as Skelt. The Spirit Wood, which will figure into the first part of the adventure, is located on the Nirmathas side of the Fangwood Forest, in the southern part of the forest. The Wyrmwood Mountains, which are where the goblinoid hordes are believed to be operating from, is in the section of the Mindspin Mountains just south of the area marked as the Bloodsworn Vale.

NW, is there anyway to make that map a bit bigger? A lot of the text is difficult to impossible to read as is.

So we are not paying the market price for weapons and armor? We are instead going with the cost of item creation? That changes things significantly.

No, it's not the same cost as item creation. Item creation usually costs only about half of the market price, depending on the item. With merchants in my game, you're paying the market price, it just doesn't include the masterworking cost (which is 300 gold for weapons, 150 for armor). Let's say you buy a suit of Chainmail +2. Chainmail has a base cost of 150 gp. +2 armor enchantment costs 4,000 gp. So you would pay 4,150 gp for a suit of +2 chainmail, and the merchant swallows the cost of masterworking (sort of how many sellers offer a slight discount in the real world if you buy a package deal). But if you buy a suit of chainmail that you want to have enchanted later, you would have to buy the chainmail and pay for the masterworking, then later pay for the enchantment, so in the end you will have paid 150 for the armor, 150 for the masterwork, and 4,000 for the enchantment. Therefore it is slightly cheaper to just buy it enchanted outright.
The item creation cost for a suit of +2 chainmail would be 300 for the masterworked armor (unless you also craft the base item itself) and 2,000 gp (plus an XP cost).

Hmmm, I guess Photobucket must compress the photos a bit. The original was a lot larger. I'll post a more closeup photo tomorrow. Right now, I just got back from my real-world game night, and it's late and I'm bushed (yeah, I know I was posting in the early morning hours a lot last week, but that's because my sleep schedule was way out of whack after recovering from the flu).
I should mention, by the way, that Sunday nights and Wednesday nights I have real-world game nights, so I won't be posting on those nights, but you guys can still carry on your conversations ingame while I'm gone.

Hope all had a good weekend.
Nightwish, if you like Jack Sparrow I should have brought in my Second Darkness character. But I’ll keep my redhead girl for our Red Hand of Doom epic.
I’m tempted to ask if I can take dirty fighting (from Low Templar) as a feat; it’s not that strong but would fit in with my character’s concept. Hmm…

Working and finalizing character today. How large is the forest compared to the mountain area ? I think forest as a favored terrain would fit my character a little bit better but I get a little bit of a spine tingle every time you say 'goblin hordes pouring forth from mountain range'. Any advice on Feats and Magic items welcome from the group; and I can’t wait to start. I'll look at 'Art of the Duel' pdf later.
I love reading the posts of the our participants in the regular discussion forums; can’t wait for us to get clobbered going through this module. I’ll take point in our first TPK !
: )
I'll reread the thread above but in case it's not covered, do we get to use racial hit point bonus for first level ?
By the way I want to use a red head for my avatar (hence ‘Claret’ in the name, well that and it’s reference to wine) but can’t find a proper avatar – and this avatar reminds me of my mom, so when I play her as a bi@tch please don’t read into that too much : ) my mom is a very giving woman. And one scary 20th level dentist.

At least all this talk is starting to make me feel young again.
Not that i'm really that old to begin with, but I'm one of the oldest in my group of friends and being a mom maked you feel even older.
Yes, I miss my high school and college days already.

About age. I am 36.
I was born on the 25th of March, 1973.
First played D&D in 1981.
Favourite fantasy game is Earthdawn.
Favourite system is nWoD.
The best games of my life have been the ones crafted by Paizo, and the rambling improvised games of Vampire the Masquerade I used to play with my best friend when we were poor in Africa.
I live in Taiwan, and am expecting my firstborn child in June.
He will be called Merlin.

I'll be 49 in 20 more days...ahhh! How did that happen? And yes I still have the original (Well second release anyway) of D&D in the little white box with all the supplements...Including Swords and Spells. Started with Basic D&D sometime back in the late 70's when I finally found some more people to play.

![]() |

I was born July 28, 1967, in Neosho, Missouri, then moved to Northern Ireland when I was but a wee lad, and lived there until the age of 10. Moved back to the US and lived in various parts of the Midwest (Tennessee, Arkansas, New Mexico, finally settling back in Missouri).
I have lived in St. Louis since 2001.
I started playing AD&D in about 1986 or 1987. I remember the red box version, and even the "Chainmail" title, but didn't actually start playing myself until the came out with AD&D. Once 2nd Edition came out, I stuck with that all the way through the mid-2000s, only finally switching to 3.5 (and skipping 3.0 entirely) a couple years ago. And now I've found Pathfinder, and have to say I'm liking it better than any of the previous systems.
I don't know who the oldest player here is, but I'm 41. Though some folks would assume I'm younger, since my screenname is taken from a Finnish symphonic metal band of whom I am a huge fan (and will be seeing live again in May), and since metal tends to be a young man's game, people are sometimes surprised I'm in my 40s and still headbanging.

It looks like the feat requires some aspects of knightly knowledge and demeanor, so you wouldn't be able to take it just routinely. However, you haven't chosen most your feats and skills yet, and you have the BAB to qualify for the Low Templar PrC, if you also choose the requisite feat (Mounted Combat) and skills (Bluff 4, Ride 4, Knowledge [Nobility & Royalty] 4), (and given the aspects of your background that we've discussed by email, that PrC might be right up your alley).
Working and finalizing character today. How large is the forest compared to the mountain area ?
The mountain range in totality is much larger, but the section of the mountain range that is known as the Wyrmsmoke Mountains is about the same size as the Fangwood Forest.

As may be obvious from my chosen screen name, I'm fond of 2nd Edition. Like Nightwish (NW) ;) , I like the PF system, and am a late convert to 3.5 by way of 2E--no 3.0 for me either. As a matter of fact, I hadn't played any D&D in about a decade until late last year, when I was overwhelmed by the urge to purchase the 1E Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide. And then I had to pick up copies of the 2E books as well (I had gotten rid of all my books several years ago during a cross-country move). My attention was drawn to 4E, but everything I read about that made me feel like it wouldn't be for me. I'd always been biased against 3E; without trying it out, I just felt like another edition was a money-making scheme--after all, what was wrong with 2E? ;) I really did like 2E for my own irrational reasons, but now that I've stumbled onto Paizo and PF I'm quite impressed with the direction taken by 3.5 and PF. I'm happy to be reclaiming my D&D roots.

Okay, let's see if this map is easier to read. It doesn't show as much of the surrounding area, but it shows the area that is immediately involved. I added a few markings to the screen print of the Golarion map, to add Drellin's Ferry, the Witchwood (which I may have inadvertently called The Spirit Wood earler), and the Wyrmsmoke Mountains.

RED FEATHER and CALUMBRUST
Okay, Red Feather and Calumbrust, here's what I'm thinking for the two of you. Calumbrust has earned some renown among his military peers in Molthune, and although Cal may have retired from military service, his former captain still holds him in high regard. Having heard some rumors of not only monstrous activities along the Nidal/Nirmathas border, but also knowing of the unrest between those two nations and some stirrings of malcontent in Cheliax, the Molthuni government would like to know what is really going on out there. So he will ask Cal if he would mind looking into it, and taking along a visiting Chronicler (Red Feather) to record what they find. You can outfit yourselves at Fort Ramgate, on the northern border between Molthune and Nirmathas, and move easily overland around the southern edge of the Witchwood, and that will put you on a course to pass right through Drellin's Ferry, unless you meet the other characters on their way to the Witchwood first. Does that sound okay to both of you?

AMIE
Judging from your character bio, after you left home for a nearby town, that town would most likely either be Skelt, which is a small village about a day's travel west of the forest and about three days' travel south of the border with Lastwall, near the foothills of the mountains; or Tamran, which is the capital city of Nirmathas, about three days' travel south of Lastwall, and a day's travel east of the forest, on the shores of Lake Encarthan; or Vellumis, which is in Lastwall, about three days' travel north of the border, also on the shores of the lake, and about three days east of the northern section of the Fangwood. Or you could have bypassed the two more northerly Nirmathas towns and gone all the way to Drellin's Ferry. The two Nirmathas towns, which are on opposite sides of the forest, will put you closer to the rest of the group, and Drellin's Ferry will put you right with some of them, but you can also choose to start from the Lastwall town, and we can still figure out a reason for you to travel south from there. If you go with Tamran, you'll most likely either meet up with Tate during an excursion directly into the forest, or with Calumbrust and Red Feather on their way west. Do you have a preference?

![]() |

Not really. What ever is easiest for you works. I guess we could make the small town Skelt. I've been there and around the area for 8 years "learning" how to be a cleric. You could say I'm just now exploring other areas. You can start me from anywhere really.
I edited my post and added a spoiler, so make sure you check that out. As for starting you out, I think I'll put you in the forest itself. You've never been very deep into this part, and most of the forest's inhabitants you've met have been humans and half-elves, mostly rangers and some druids. The true elves keep to themselves, and you've not met any of them, but you know they are in there somewhere. Perhaps it was a burning desire to find out about your true heritage that brought you into the forest.

Yeah, I do that to encourage people to make their characters more personal. Keeps them from being "fast food" characters, if you know what I mean. Sometimes it'll be a feat, or a skill boost, or possibly even an ability score boost, or an item that is very personal and useful to the character (not necessarily a magic item, but you've never had it identified, so you don't know).

Ok couldn't get the Invisablecastle dice roller to work for me on my computer (no idea why, its an ordinary pc) but I have experience with another dice roller that emails results to the GM and yourself so I used that instead (hopes it ok, better than the honor system atleast).
I rolled a 20 (NEVER have this much luck with online dice rollers)
Perception is +2
Sight or Sound based +4
So my total is 22 or 24.
I assume I passed?

Hi guys, my apologies for not having my character’s magic items done, but part of my job is dealing with studio people and there are three movie premiers in Manhattan this week, and this weekend looks rough on me as well. I don’t have the Pathfinder Beta not the DMG in front of me and since I’m not a 3.5 guru (but could play a rules lawyer for the red box, Ad&d, and 2nd ed if I had to be) would some of you consider throwing me suggestions for magic items per NW’s guidelines ?
I do want to tweak out my Rapier as much as possible (maybe Keen?), and need armor or bracers (thinking mithril shirt + 2) and want a solid miscellaneous magic item that either I or the party can get milage out of. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks all.

A keen blade is gonna cost you 8,000 for enchanments alone because it has to be +1 first. Total would be 8,020.
+2 Mithral shirt would be 5,100 gold.
That would leave you with 2880 gold left, which really should be engough for any equipment you want as long as it isn't magic or enchanted.
Personally one of my favorite magic items its the Ring of Sustenance for 2500. No carrying around rations and you only require two hours of sleep per night.
I also rather like the Handy Haversack for 2000gp. It can hol 120 lb of stuff (or about 12 cubic feet) and still weighs only 5lb. Also what ever you are looking for in the bag magically turns up at the top so no digging around.
Thats about all the advice I've got.
Oh and I think I’m too young to be a geezer yet. I'll only be a quarter century come the next solstice.

Thanks for the advice ! If anyone else woul dlike to chime in today please do.
Some of my favourites:
Eyes of the Eagle (+5 to Perception, 2500 gp)Wand of CLW (750 gp)
tanglefoot bags (50 gp each)
a reach weapon of some kind
potions of protection from evil and invisibility
By the way, don't forget your spellcasting.

![]() |

Thanks, I was thinking 'big ticket items' and I think my perception will be at + 12 in most cases as it stands, but a Wand of CLW is definitely the game's best buy.
Thanks though. Hmmm tanglefoot bags.
