But next time you see a halfling that's good with their hands think before you speak. We're not all thieves. There's just as many different personalities and inclinations among halflings as any other race. If more take to thieving, well, it doesn't help that they're accused anyways. I've had more than a few friends decide that they may as well commit the crime if they're going to be blamed regardless."

Your conversation is interrupted by the return of the attendant carrying a small coffer, together with a tall, slender elven woman who sweeps into the room with a confident smile. The attendant stands quietly by the door as the new arrival takes a seat at the head of the table, placing a sheaf of documents beside her as she greets each of you by name before she addresses the gathering.

“My name is Jalden Krenshar. Thank you all for coming,” begins the elf brightly, “I’m sure you have a good idea of why I’ve asked you to come. Nonetheless, please allow me to outline recent developments here in Osirion and to present a proposal to you for your consideration.”

“As you know, Osirion is plagued by the khamsin – a vast, elemental sandstorm which sweeps through the desert each year. This year was the worst in living memory. The elementals driving the storm went beserk, shifting tons of sand and literally burying whole towns and oases in minutes. At the same time, new valleys and canyons have been left behind and ancient wonders have been unearthed for the first time in centuries.”

“Already expeditions have returned from some of these ancient structures and the rewards for those prepared to brave the journey have been enormous.” Jalden pauses as her eyes move steadily from face to face. “Now, although the Pathfinders are always interested in new discoveries,” she continues, “we are more than mere treasure hunters.” Leaning forward slightly, her eyes seem to shine with excitement. “We have very good reason to believe that one of these resurfaced structures towering out of the desert floor is none other than the legendary pyramid complex of the Four Pharaohs of Ascension,” she announces quietly. “A discovery of such magnitude...that is something worthy of the Pathfinders interest!”

“If you are willing, we would like to sponsor you on an expedition of discovery, exploration and research. I have here,” she continues indicating the documents on the table, “official papers authorising you as representatives of the Pathfinder Society and licensing you both to explore the recently uncovered structures and to retrieve items for your personal use, provided they are not deemed to be of national significance to the people of Osirion. We also have information and contacts which should ensure you are well ahead of any rivals in discovering the pyramid complex.”

“In return, the Pathfinder Society will expect a modest proportion of the value of any antiquities you manage to retrieve – one part in ten. You will also be required to provide us with a journal, documenting your journey, for the exclusive use of the Society. What do you say? Do we have a deal?”

Douena leaps to her feet on her chair and waves her arms wildly; being Small, she's used to having to go to great lengths to attract attention to herself. "Who are the Four Pharaohs, and where did they ascend to?"

Douena Trestleben wrote:

"They were rulers of Ancient Osirion," answers Jalden before continuing with an apologetic smile, "during the third age of the black sphinx, I believe although I must confess to being something of a poor student of history. Although they were bitter rivals, they formed some form of alliance and ruled jointly for many years. I'm afraid I don't know how they came to be called the Pharaohs of Ascension. You'd need to ask a true historian."

"Pharoahs that powerful, I bet they were buried with lots of sparklies. I like sparklies. I wonder what other interesting things there will be to find. Maybe they painted stories on the walls. I bet it's some really interesting stuff. I wonder what else is in there? Oh, this is just so exciting. When do we leave? Are we supposed to sign anything? Oh, I can hardly wait."
Elysia is literally bouncing with excitement.

Garai frowns slightly at the behaviour of the gnome and halfling. "Please little ladies, quell your excitement a moment. The tomb of a single Pharaoh would be expected to be well warded, and defended by things of great evil. The tomb of four, if that is what this is, could well be even greater. What dangers can we expect to face on this trip? Or are we the preliminary investigation?"

"As for your terms, they sound reasonable enough, though I would cap that 1 in 10 at a reasonable value myself. I do hope that not many have to read my journal, I have never written other than to keep records of transactions."

Spoiler:

I don't know if you have access to any more information about the pharaohs or not, but hopefully there are some details in the module. Considering Kimu is an historian, I'd like to make a knowledge: history roll to see if he knows anymore about the Third Age of the Black Sphinx, the alliance, or the individual pharaohs.

Knowledge: History = (2+14) = 16

Spoiler:

The four Pharaohs of Ascension were bitter rivals whose feuding nearly brought an end to the Ancient Osirion Empire. Eventually, they realised that their rivalry would destroy the nation and so agreed to be bound by a magical pact which bound their fates. From that point, although they continued to despise one another, they were destined to live together, to rule together and to die together. The four pharaohs were:

Anok Fero - the Cerulean Pharaoh
Hetshepsu - the Fiend Pharaoh
Ankana - the Radiant Pharaoh
The Pharaoh of Numbers, whose name you do not know, you suspect that nobody does.

They each had differing strengths and weaknesses, but once their pact was formed they ruled as equals, cementing a long period of Osirion dominance over the ancient world.

“Rest assured you will not be examined on literary form,” replies Jalden with a quiet laugh. “We seek accurate information, not bedside reading. A simple recounting of what you see and do is all we ask.” Turning more serious, she lowers her voice again as she continues in a more conspiratorial tone.

“With regards to your first question, as far as most know this is indeed the first expedition inside the fabled pyramid. However, one of our agents has learnt of a previous, failed expedition several decades ago. Further, she has managed to track down the sole survivor of that expedition, a man who still lives right here in Sothis. There will be many seeking the route to the pyramid, hopefully this added information will give you an advantage over all those rivals.”

“Whether someone beats you to the prize is entirely up to you,” she says with a smile towards Douena. "You'll have to win that race if you truly want to be the first to see what treasures wait inside."

Kimu seems to have been thinking deeply during the past minute or so. Suddenly he turns to Douena. "I've studied a bit of ancient history, and although it's not one of my specialties, I do recall a bit of information on the four pharaohs. In ancient days, these four pharaohs vied against each other for dominance of the Osirian Empire. After a long rivalry, they began to see the damage that their fierce competition was causing to the country and people of Osirion. According to some accounts, the empire was on the verge of fracturing into different political factions, and the internecine violence that began to rend the social fabric was what finally caused the four pharaohs to realize the dire situation that their rivalry had created. To reverse this political disintegration, the four made a magical pact, binding their fates together, ensuring that they would rule together and die together."

Kimu pauses here to look around the table, as if surveying the attention of his audience. After a moment, he continues speaking. "The four pharaohs were known as The Cerulean Pharaoh, the Fiend Pharaoh, the Radiant Pharaoh, and the Pharaoh of Numbers. Although the true name of the Pharaoh of Numbers has been lost to history, scholars have determined the proper names of the other three. The Cerulean Pharaoh was named Anok Fero; the Fiend Pharaoh, Hetshepsu; and the Radiant Pharaoh was called Ankana."

Kimu smiles at his audience, then turns his attention to the Venture Captain. "I've got a good amount of parchment, and was planning to keep a detailed record of our exploration at any rate. I would be happy to provide you with a copy of it when we return. As for the treasures, surely the more valuable and historic artifacts should be put in museums, don't you think? I know I would not feel very proud of myself if I hoarded away some ancient inscriptions or documents in my own personal library, and certainly, if we were to discover a staff of the pharaohs or some other such artifact, that belongs to the citizens and historic preservation of Osirion, not say, in the hands of a mercenary." Kimu looks across the table at Garai as he concludes, raising his eyebrows provocatively.

"This is certainly a historical opportunity that I would be remiss to not take advantage of and I for one would be glad to ensure that the people of Osirion received what is rightfully theirs. Do we have guidelines as to what constitutes an item of national significance or will the status of an item be judged upon our return?"

"Our times could use more rulers like that. Four individuals who might not have liked each other much but realized that by working together they could accomplish more good for their people. By the blessings of Iomedae there is a good sermon there and I'll be glad to have someone along who knows some of the history of Osirion."

"Rest assured, the agents of the Ruby Prince will be sure to seize any item they feel belongs to the people of Osirion," answers Jalden. "Although if that happens, they will be sure to compensate you fairly for anything which they claim. The authorities are keen to avoid allowing a black market to develop."

Allovin Dar wrote:
"Who would this individual be and what has he/she been doing for the last decade?"

"I haven't met him myself. The agent I spoke of is known as the Mithral Scarab, she will be able to take you to him. The Mithril Scarab has proved useful to us in the past, although she prefers to remain aloof from the Pathfinders as much as possible." Motioning to the attendant, Jalden accepts the small coffer he is carrying and opens it, revealing several neat rows of platinum pieces stored inside, fifty in all.

"The Mithril Scarab has indicated that she will meet you at an auction house in the Malhitu Bazaar this evening. Several treasures from recently uncovered minor pyramids are being sold. Such auctions are not strictly legal, but the authorities tend to tolerate such things - the benefits to the Osirion economy of this flood of treasure has been considerable."

"I'm sure you know the Kemeserian's pavilion," she remarks to Allovin. "The Mithral Scarab has asked that you rendezvous with her there. These funds will allow you to register as buyers and to purchase any of the lots you see fit - obviously the Pathfinder Society will ask that anything you do buy with our funds be turned over to us at the conclusion of your mission."

"The Mithral Scarab has asked that you make yourself known through your manner of bidding. Before making a bid, she has asked that you inspect your funds carefully before you do. Once you have identified yourselves in this way, she will contact you and lead you to meet this lone survivor."

"Clearly, speed will be of the essence, however it may take a few days before you are able to leave Sothis. In the meantime, you are all welcome to stay here if you have need of room and board. I'll leave that to you." Making as if to leave, Jalden indicates the papers on the table.

"Unless there are any questions, I'll leave you to your mission," she says. "I'll stress once more that you will not be alone in seeking this tomb. With luck, the information from the survivor you will be meeting later tonight will give you a few days head start on any rivals. By the time they discover the exact location of the Pyramid, I hope you will have been long gone." Inclining her head to each of you in turn, Jalden makes to leave, although she will answer any more questions if required.

Garai looks through one of the windows to get some idea of the time, "As it is still so early in the afternoon, may I suggest that we make arrangements for the next days food and lodgings, and then do a little investigation of this person we should meet? I my self am not a very investigative type, but I am sure one of us will have such skills? I shall be staying here in the lodge, as the offer has been extended. Garai looks momentarily startled, though this is quickly replaced as he decides that Kimu must be planning to steal the cash later, then he looks confused as he wonders just how the fop would steal from such an obviously capable person, even if he is much taller....

All of this is most likely hilarious to the rest of the group, though Kimu no doubt isn't impressed. Garai is just that bad at hiding his thoughts.....

"Yes, the paladin is the best if he will oblige, although it may be that the cask is too heavy for him lug about, perhaps there is a strong box here, and we could collect the cask later?"

"So the paladin gets the platinum, and the rest of us get the afternoon off," Douena exclaims, jumping down from the chair. "But who are we asking around about, the Scarab person or the man who's been to the pyramid? Because we probably shouldn't ask around about him, in case we tip someone else off that he even exists. Kimu smiles at the energetic gnome. "Now, that's a good idea. It may be best if we travel at night. The desert will be cooler." The half-elf pauses for a split second, then adds, "Hopefully not too cool."

"First things first, though. Let's all meet back in this room this evening. Perhaps we could all get dinner together and then head to the auction to meet our contact, the Mithral Scarab."

When you head out into the afternoon, you can feel the desert heat beginning to fade. As evening approaches, more and more people can be found on the street running errands or taking care of other business having avoided the oppressive heat of noon. Many of them are heading to the Malhitu Bazaar – a sprawling, raucous maze of tents, stalls and semi-permanent buildings. As well as the usual market offerings, there are many unscrupulous traders hawking “genuine” Osirion artefacts supposedly liberated from ancient pyramids. Equally prevalent are a number of Sothis locals selling maps to previously undiscovered tombs and temples, all (they claim) bursting with vast, undiscovered wealth.

On the edge of the great plaza which houses the bazaar is a grand looking inn catering to visitors to Sothis, The Pharaoh’s Rest. They serve quality, local dishes at a reasonable price, although those who choose to spend the night there pay a considerable amount for the spectacular views from the first and second floors – the windows in the rooms look out across the bazaar and then over the rest of the city, giving a breathtaking view of the giant scarab beetle carapace which rises above the city skyline.

Allovin can easily lead you to the large, white pavilion where the Kemesarian conducts his business. For now, it is closed, but the two Eunuchs at the door inform you that prospective bidders will be admitted one hour early if they wish to view the items prior to the auction commencing. You have a few hours before then if anyone has any specific plans for the afternoon.

Douena would be happy to have Elysia along. She has never spent any time as a merchant and enjoys hearing stories about the jeweler's shop.

Honestly, given their shared exuberance and liking for shiny things, I'll be surprised if they aren't braiding each other's hair and painting each other's toenails while they're supposed to be on watch before this adventure is over. :)

Kimu will return home for the afternoon and spend some time reading. He's particularly interested in finding out some information on this Mithral Scarab.

Knowledge: local = 1d20+15 = 18

After perusing his books and resting a bit, he'll return to the meeting room. He's also interested in getting to the auction early.

Kimu:

Spoiler:
There are very few references to the Mithril Scarab that you are able to find. The only scrap of information you are able to dig up doesn’t tell you much more than what Jalden was able to convey. One of the more recent Pathfinder missives makes passing reference to her in relation to a recent exploratory journey to the source of the river Sphinx. Tobias Darkweather, the pathfinder who made that journey, commented that “The Mithril Scarab was invaluable to me in finding reliable guides through the mountains. She went to such lengths to remain unknown to me – all of our meetings involved a complicated charade almost verging on the paranoid. Nonetheless, for those seeking to find a guide through Osirion, I can recommend none better to ask than this enigmatic broker.”

Douena and Elysia:

Spoiler:
Douena and Elysia spend the afternoon seeing the sights of Sothis. Besides the Black Dome which looms over the city, they also take in the spectacular Council of Sun and Sky – an enormous glass-domed building in the centre of a huge, paved plaza. The centre of Osirion’s government, the Council is situated close to the Palace of the Forthbringer, home of the Ruby Prince.

At one point, as the guards’ attention is drawn by a heated argument on the steps, the two diminutive women somehow find themselves inside the halls usually reserved for the nation’s rich and powerful. They only enjoy the wide, marble halls for a few minutes – fascinated by the ornate decoration and the many ancient relics on display. Before too long they are discovered by a patrol of guards, slightly flustered at the breach in security. After a brief interrogation, it becomes clear that the interlopers pose no serious threat and the halfling and gnome are ushered outside once more.

As evening approaches, you all assemble at the Pathfinder Lodge. When you are all ready, Allovin leads the way, confidently guiding you through the streets of Sothis towards the Malhitu Bazaar. Noticeably cooler now, the crowds are busy and vibrant, shaking off the lethargy that was brought on by the oppressive, afternoon heat. The bazaar is in full swing, throngs of people pressing through the maze of tents as traders offer you all manner of goods and services. Without pause, Allovin leads you to a more secluded, out of the way part of the enormous, open market. There you find a very large, white pavilion rapidly filling in preparation for the evening’s auction. At the door are two well armed and keen eyed guards who politely ask whether you are here as an observer or as a bidder.

“Entry is free to those who are just here for the show,” the guard informs you courteously. “However, if you wish to be a participant in the auction, you must pay a ten gold coin registration fee.”

Peering inside you can see a small stage with a semi-circular roped off area around it. Those who choose not to register are allowed no closer than the barrier. Those who have paid the registration fee are clearly permitted to have a small entourage, so only one of you would need to register to gain access for all of you. Most who are entering the tent remain in the public area behind the rope, however a few groups of registered bidders are beginning to filter in. Under the watchful eye of half a dozen eunuchs, they are permitted to examine the various lots which have been displayed on the stage.

Garai looks at his companions, and especially at Kimu"Yes, friend Kimu is certainly dressed for such an action."

"Oh, I'd be happy to bid on something in the manner prescribed by Jalden for this charade! I am quite intrigued by this Mithril Scarab and am keen to see how she reveals herself to us. From what references I was able to find this afternoon, she seems like quite an agent of schemes and plots! This should be a vastly entertaining evening, folks, and the beginning of a wonderful journey!" Without pausing, he adds, "Oh, and I don't think that Jalden intended for us to pay out-of-pocket for registration; or am I recalling incorrectly that she had budgeted the entrance fee into the 50 platinum which Allovin holds?" At this last phrase, the bard's voice descends into a whisper, lest a cutpurse or similar vagabond be lurking, listening for such an opportunity to acquire the goods of others.

Stepping forward with a bright smile and a small sweep of his cloak...

"In that case gentlemen, here are your ten gold coins, as I am here to bid on this evenings offerings. My name is Allovin Dar, servant of Iomedae, and my four companions will be accompanying me. Is there a list of the items being offered for auction tonight?"

Diplomacy check for the guards at the entrance to the auction. (1d20+11=27)

Garai also whispers, though possibly a little too low, "Indeed, that was the impression I was given in the short meeting we took part in this morning."

The guard accepts your payment with a smooth bow, presenting you with a small silver broach shaped as an ankh.

“Good evening Sir Allovin,” he says “the items are all being displayed on the stage, you and your companions are welcome to inspect anything before the auction begins in around half an hour.” Leaning forward conspirationally, he lowers his voice to prevent his next comment from carrying too far.

“If I may say, sir,” he murmurs, “the collection of papyrus scrolls are the true treasure here from what I hear. They are reputed to have been written by the Pharaoh of Numbers himself! They would fetch a fortune to the right buyer. The collection of charcoal rubbings is another lot to keep an eye on, at least if you’re more interested in academic research than objects of fine art. They were taken from the inside of a recently uncovered tomb. Who knows what secrets they may reveal if they were accurately deciphered.”

The two guards motion for you to enter the roped-off, restricted area. There are several other groups who have also registered as bidders, although it is much less crowded around the stage than in the packed, public part of the pavilion. Clearly the auction will have a very large audience.

If anyone else wishes to register as a bidder in addition to Allovin, the guards will take your fee. Otherwise you are all welcome to enter the restricted area but only Allovin will be recognised as a potential bidder.

Douena hesitates at the entrance to the pavilion, chewing her lip, shifting her weight from foot to foot, and generally appearing on the horns of a dilemma. Finally, she blurts, "Here! Here's 10 gold! I want to bid, too!"

I have the feeling Desnans and their money are soon parted. She probably can't even afford anything at the auction. Although, from her point of view, if money can't buy you a new experience, what good is it?

At least she gets to keep the ankh - another shiny trinket for her collection.

The other guard accepts Douena's payment and also presents the gnome with a silver broach, pinning it to her tunic before allowing her into the private section of the auction house.

Elysia's eyes widen as she sees the things exhibited for sale. Oh, look at all the shinies! I bet each and every one of those things has some incredibly fascinating story behind it. I wonder what it is. Do you think they come with stories, or are you just supposed to guess? I've never been to an auction before. My dad took me to a few estate sales now and then, but nothing this posh.

As you move into that section of the pavilion reserved for the auction participants, you get a clearer view of the various lots arrayed around the stage under the watchful eye of half a dozen eunuchs employed by the Kemesarian to keep the items safe. The guards on stage are supplemented by another ten or so agents moving unobtrusively through the crowd, continually scanning the assembled onlookers for trouble. As registered bidders, you are allowed to inspect any of the lots up close, although you are forbidden from handling anything. Many of the other bidders are taking advantage of this, conferring quietly with companions as they each size up the competition. Examining the various items up for auction you see:

Lot One:
A weathered stone figurine depicting a slumbering noblewoman reclining on a divan. She is holding an intricate staff underneath her crossed arms.

Lot Two:
Seven large gold coins, far bigger than any currency currently in use.

Lot Three:
A stack of several pages of paper, obviously produced recently. They have been held against some unknown carvings and then lightly rubbed with charcoal producing a passable reproduction of the original, stone symbols.

Lot Four:
Eleven green-speckled veinstones (a beautiful, light green stone shot through with dark green fissures). They are in the shape of small disks, around four inches in diameter and one inch thick. Inspecting the surface closely shows a smooth, fine sheen with subtle, sparkling highlights.

Lot Five:
A six inch tall bronze sculpture of a muscled man with a cobra’s head and a serpent’s tail. There are some faint etchings on the figure’s chest.

Lot Six:
A collection of eleven papyrus scrolls. They look ancient and quite fragile, arrayed in a small velvet lined, darkwood carrying case, each scroll is individually tied with a silk cord.

Kimu pauses at the entrance, pondering the opportunity to bid personally on the items. When Douena excitedly purchases an ankh for herself, he comes to the decision not to buy his own token, although with some obvious resignation. He catches up with Douena inside the auction. "Remember," he whispers to her, walking half-bent so as to speak closer to her ears, "Allovin will be bidding for the group in a certain manner. I know it's tempting to participate in the auction, but if there is an item that you think would be useful for our expedition, tell Allovin and he can bid on it for us with the funds that Jalden gave us." Before the gnome can respond, Kimu paces forward to catch up with Allovin.

The half-elf whispers conspiratorially to the halfling, "Definitely bid on the scrolls reputed to be written by the pharaoh! I would also like to take a look at those charcoal rubbings. I have a hunch that they might prove useful to us! I am going to check them out and then get back to you--they might be something worth bidding a portion of our platinum on, good paladin!"

Kimu will seek out the rubbings and see if he can make anything of them with a quick inspection

As the auction approaches, the pavilion is filling fast. There are hordes of onlookers behind the ropes, under the close eye of the heavy security. Within the restricted area, a number of chairs have been set out in front of the stage, however most of the prospective bidders are preferring to stand, dotted around the area in small groups as they murmur quietly amongst their small groups. The exception to this is a haughty, finely dressed man with a neatly trimmed beard who sits right in the centre of the front row. His robes are richly appointed and he holds an ornate, metal rod casually as he makes the occasional comment to the companion at his right. This second man is smaller, with dark hair. He wears no armor and cradles a strange wooden device, decorated with fine metalwork. He seems to be attending to the taller nobleman and the two of them are flanked by half a dozen Chelish legionnaires.

Continuing to look around the restricted area, you see a woman with the hood of her robe pulled up, despite the heat, standing off to one side with her hulking bodyguard. The large, bare chested man wears a small gemstone on his forehead. His skin seems grey and leathery, almost appearing to be a statue when he stands still. Not speaking to his mistress, he remains close, his gaze continually sweeping the room, moving to intercept anyone who seems to be approaching his charge.

DC 10 Local Lore:

Spoiler:
He is a living monolith, a rare form of fanatical warrior who are sworn to protect.

DC 15 Local Lore:

Spoiler:
Living monoliths undergo a secret ritual and swear themselves to service as protectors and guardians. They gain many mystical powers in exchange for this servitude, some even whisper that they are immortal – living forever as tireless guardians of their chosen cause.

There is a loud group of three nobles, together with half a dozen retainers, who have congregated together, laughing loudly and boasting of their intention to buy everything on offer at this evening’s auction. All three of them wear ornate, extravagant clothing and each has a silver ankh pinned to their tunics.

In another corner, near the stage, there is a quiet looking man in dark robes. He is accompanied by seven obvious guardsmen holding a small strongbox and glaring at anyone who dares to go near them. He watches new arrivals calmly, without showing any real interest on the items on display. As you enter, another man walks up to him and they have a brief conversation. It is clear that the two of them are not on the best of terms and after a few curt sentences, the single man moves to the chairs, taking a seat a short distance from the imperious Chelish nobleman and his entourage.

Other people you can see include a contingent of learned looking sages, discussing some of the items in urgent whispers. They peer intently at the various lots before huddling together urgently to discuss what they see, clearly very animated and excited to be here. A short distance from them is a woman who also seems to be dressed as a sage, although she is clearly not part of the group beside the stage.

The final two who have been admitted into the private section make an odd couple. One is a bald-headed halfling, and a small one at that, lounging next to his hulking half-orc companion beside the gap in the rope where you have all entered. They appear oblivious to everyone around them, completely disinterested in proceedings as they talk quietly, occasionally laughing together as the public galleries continue to fill.

Although the sun is rapidly sinking, it is still hot in the pavilion. The hint of a cool breeze has begun to flow through the city of Sothis, but with the tent walls firmly down it has not yet had much of an impact in here. Together with that, the press of humanity who have come to watch tonight makes the large room quite stifling, although at least in the private area you have enough room to move. Behind the barriers, people are beginning to be pressed shoulder to shoulder. The occasional short, irritable argument breaks out as the close quarters and the heat causes people to snap at one another. Within seconds of any disturbance though, the professional, vigilant guards are on the scene, smoothing over disagreements and ensuring nothing disturbs the proceed

Believe it or not, Kimu has not trained linguistics. I don't suppose there's some knowledge check that could be substituted?
