My players reaction when they met Vencarlo (Spoilers)

Curse of the Crimson Throne

So my player's met Vencarlo Orisini for the first time whereupon the first thing one of my players, a brash and cocky swashbuckler, said:

Spoiler:
Are you Blackjack?

I had barely gotten to describing the guy, so this caught me somewhat off-guard.

*Sorry about the double spoiler tags, but I know that some players lurk here so I want to play it safe.

I had a similar situation but just had Vencarlo laugh it off, as though it wasn't even a serious-enough question to deserve an answer. He simply steered the conversation back to the topic at hand. If your players are really determined to follow up on their wild guess, you might have Vencarlo hire someone to wear a Blackjack-like costume to swing by, wave at the party from a nearby rooftop, and then head out, all while Vencarlo is standing right next to them. Vencarlo could explain to the look-alike that some friends of his are big fans of Blackjack and this is a prank he's pulling on them, etc.

At the end of the day, though, I don't think it's a terrible thing if the PCs guess Blackjack's identity in advance. When they finally realize the truth, the players will be proud of their lucky guess and Vencarlo can comment on their ability to judge character.

Yeah, I tried to have Vencarlo laugh it off as well, but then the situation turned ugly as the other players caught on and almost started to interrogate him, I had to have Kroft brake it off (they did have more pressing matters anyway), but the players continued their search for he truth afterwards when they visited Vencarlo's school. The players demanded sense motive rolls (which they failed). The swashbuckler seems to have some sort of obsession with Blackjack, I think he really caught on to the legend when he read about him in the players guide, he even included him in his backstory.

I was thinking perhaps Grau discovered Vencarlos secret while he was still a student and might don the mantle for a bit to confuse the players. I was thinking of making him more of an antihero and vigilante version, but only after the events with the real Blackjack has taken place. I was thinking of making Grau sort of a dark mirror version of the swashbuckler, because I don't like the vicious and vindictive streak his character has gotten.

The Exchange

Actually happened with my players as well, but I have brewed a shiny little solution for this mess.
You see, I entered a new character to the campaign, a student of Vencarlo. He is the only citizen in Korvosa that knows the real identity of Vencarlo, and he aids him whenever necessary.
At the very end of EoA, at the execution, the PC's met Vencarlo, who waved them in a friendly manner. When Black Jack appeared and ended the fabricated field court at the last moment, my players were shocked. Seeing Vencarlo and Blackjack at the same place surprised them well enough, so now they are confused.
What really happened was that Vencarlos' student took his teachers' public place, using a greater illusion spell. Should solve the problem and make sense to most people...

Liberty's Edge

I am going to spoiler my whole post here. Not that Players would ever wander around here or anything or that they would open said spoiler tag...

Spoiler:

My PC's were very uninterested in Vencarlo. None of them had a clue that he would be Black Jack, but then even though they had all read the Player's guide they didn't notice the bit in there about BJ. To be honest they didn't like Vencarlo at all. I tried to have him be friendly and outgoing, but they all felt that he was arrogant and obnoxious (as they told me afterwards). They were also suspicious that he was trying to pry into their business, which was a bit odd as he asked few questions about them and what they were doing and tried to keep his conversation on Devargo and Eel's End. I don't think either side made a very good impression. To be honest if Vencarlo had had any other options I don't think he would have asked the PC's to help Trinia out of town.
