I just noticed the update that states that those advancing in the first round will be posted at 2pm Pacific time ... which means I'll be bouncing off the walls until then, since I lucked into a day off.
72 hours to get your villain ready and submitted -- ready, set, write!
I scheduled a job interview on Tuesday, so I'll be nice and distracted from waiting until 5PM EST for the announcement.

Now, you realize of course that at 13:58 Pacific on 1/20/09 Paizo will have a server crash because of all the hits on their website. :)

Now you, you just shut your dirty vile mouth with that insane talk! Insane I say! *says with tongue firmly planted in cheek, his own cheek, pervets*

I'm a bit confused, however. On the main chart, it says the winners will be announced at 10:00 PM (I'm assuming PST). So I won't get to see the winners until midnight? That eight hours cuts a huge chunk off the Top 32's crunch time. :P
64 hours to get your villain ready and submitted!
(Maybe I should have taken some time off work, after all!)

No. 10:00 pm is just when the servers will be back up from the crash at 13:58.

I think that's the whole "This is your local time" thing that confused a lot of people. So, I guess at 10 PM, your time, you'll get to see who advanced.
Edit: Just checked mine, and it says 5 PM, which is correct for EST.
You know, it pays to fully examine your account settings. Not only was my time zone set to GMT, but I didn't have an Avatar image or a proper name or anything! We're all straight now. :)
*kicks teeth out of own head*

Yeah, sorry about the time zone confusion thing. If you're not signed in, or you haven't specifically selected a time zone and we can't guess an appropriate time zone (from your subscription shipping address, or a recent order), we default to GMT. I intend to fix the RPG Superstar calendar widget to indicate the time zone it's using if it's something other than pacific time when I can get to it.

More importantly, can you promise to keep the server up tomorrow? :D

Well, I've just returned home from Ashland, where I was playing Settlers of Catan with some good friends, as well as having a nice vegetarian dinner. It's funny, but while I'm not a vegetarian, I am one when I visit Kevin and Sarah, so it's all good.
But, now that I'm home, I'm no longer distracted by good company, games, and food from tomorrow approaching. I think I'm gonna drive myself nuts which, if I move to the next round, might help with villain design.
*chuckles*

Which means that us Europeans will see who made it around 11PM. Which means that I will see it probably next morning...oh well, it's not like I expect to continue to the next round anyway :)

Wish I could promise that but unfortunately tomorrow's a sick day for me.... However things seem to have been running reasonably smoothly lately so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed. (And I think Vic will probably have me on speed-dial just in case things do go south.)
Gary, do you really think you should have said that out loud where the post monster could hear it?

Making the wait intolerable right now...
1. Its maintenance day for WoW, so I can't distract myself that way
2. My xbox crashed again, so thats out as an option
3. I finished the last unread book from my Christmas presents last night. So now I'm out of new reading material.
4. It is my day off, so I don't even have work to distract me.
*I think I'll head to the bookstore and find something to distract me until 2pm.

I have a friend who entered that I'm rooting for. Course if he does get in the 32 I lose voting rights to be fair to everyone lol. Good luck to everyone though.
What? Who said you need to be fair to everyone? There is not a thing wrong with voting for your friend as far as they go. You can be fair and "objective" with your other votes if you like.
I will say without an ounce of shame that I voted for myself every round last year, and I would 100% expect every entrant to do the same. Your friend is in this thing to win it, right? You don't think Barack Obama and George Bush voted for themselves? Heck, so did Ralph Nader and that guy from the World Workers Party.
James Jacobs posted a sort of "score sheet" a few days ago for rating yourself on how well you think you'd stack up as a potential freelancer. One of those entries was "ego" - not the kind of ego that says "My stuff is so good that I am entitled to this and that" or that can't take direction or editing. No, the kind of ego that isn't apologetic about being in the contest. It is a good thing to be humble, but if YOU cann't show that you're really sold on what you're doing, why should anyone else? It's the kind of ego that says "you know what, this is good stuff, and I'm going to fight for it" - not to DEMAND your way, or to believe that you have to win those fights, but to show that you believe in what you're doing and are willing to go to bat for it.
A lot of people don't even enter a contest like this, because they haven't yet gotten past that crisis of confidence, that feeling of "maybe I'm not good enough to win." The truth is that 99+% of the people who have the confidence to enter aren't going to win. I didn't win last year. I did very well and had a ton of fun, but I didn't win the contest, just like the other 855 people who weren't Christine.
But 100% of the people who don't enter aren't going to win.
If your friend gets in the top 32, then God bless him. You go ahead and promote your friend. Vote early and often! And don't feel bad about it for a second. As the old saying goes, it's a sad dog that won't wag its own tail!
Or in this case a friend's tail, but anyway... :)

I'm kind of nervous, too. That seems silly, probably. But we picked the top 32. I know what -items- advanced, but I dont know what -people- advanced. I am as excited as all of you to find out who the people are who submitted the advancing items! Plus, while I think we did a real good job judging, somewhere there will be someone who gets left out and who maybe deserved to have gotten in and didnt. So as a judge you are a little nervous about whether you made the right choices. I sure think we did! And I cant wait to join in all the excitement about the announcement!

[sillyrant]So I can blame you for not selecting my obviously superior 700-word opus wherein I define a word for the mentally deficient. I know it's WAY better than anything you selected, and because you didn't select my item, I will take my money elsewhere and never buy Paizo products or Necromancer Game products (or Open Design or SKR products for that matter). [/sillyrant]
Seriously, you've got a tough job, but I trust you and the other judges to pick the items you see the most potential in. It can be subjective, but that is just the nature of this type of work.
Thanks a lot for all that you three have done for this contest (plus all the "celebrity" guest judges, Erik, Lisa, Vic, Gary, and a whole slew of people I'm forgetting). It's been a lot of fun so far!

I didn't realize that the judges didn't learn the identities of the winners once the top 32 were solidified. Did you find yourself mentally comparing the writing styles of people posting in the RPG SS threads to the writing styles of the various items you were reviewing?

Okay. That was entirely needed. Thanks, Golarion.
I kept myself busy watching Lost: S3 last night and just finished with the Inauguration events... Now to actually get some work done. Well, after this post.
I'm on the fence as to whether I should leave work late so that I can check the results before I get on my train or just wait until I get home hours later. Decisions. Decisions.
No matter what, I look forward to working some of these items into games I start up in the future.
Best of luck to to us all. May the best win this round.
Would someone confirm we can vote more than once in the coming rounds?

Nope. I literally have no clue WHO advanced. I only know what items did. I made NO attempt to match things up. So it will be a surprise to me as much as anyone else.
I take that back. I do know ONE that advanced. But that was a wierd case. You'll see.

Lol, I forgot that each round lets ya have more then one vote. And after hearing that you voted for yourself makes me feel better about voting. But again good luck to all the top 32.
