My question: Will the Star Trek franchise and its fans undergo a 3E/4E style flamewar over the 'reimagining' of the iconic characters and the universe?
My mystic 8 ball says: Of course! To the Internet! There's arguments afoot!

I disagree with you! Therefore you are a horrible person! I believe (and therefore the ONLY POSSIBLE truth is):
RABBLERABBLE! RABBLE! RABBLE!
Obviously, you see how I can be nothing but right.
I'm so excited!

Will I see it? Sure.
I do like some of the ship redesigns from movies past... but this one looks a bit silly to me. The curves and plumps make it look like a Dodge Viper. The only think it's missing is a spoiler. Looks almost smaller than the older versions.
The casting looks a bit Abercrombie and Fitch... No manly characters... everyone's boyish. (although Karl Urban might handily summon McCoy's intensity.)

So this is a reimagining and not a flashback?
I haven't been following this production very closely but was under the impression that this story was just the as-yet untold tale of Kirk's first mission with Spock and McCoy and so on.
Is this actually a "ditch everything and start over" movie?
Indiana Jones Chronicles or Battlestar Galactica V2?

I don't mind the boots and other stuff, but if it's a re-imagining, they could have at least replaced the miniskirts with something more practical. <sighs>
As I understand, the storyline involves young Kirk during his cadet stage of life. But according to canon, if I recall correctly, Kirk first met Spock during the first episode of the Original Series. (The one where the Enterprise broke through some sort of galactic boundary and two important crew members - including Kirk's original BFF - got crazy god-powers.)
Nonetheless, I am looking forward to the movie.

The man himself? Someone resurrected Gene Rodenberry and asked him his opinion? ;)
As a non-trekkie all I can say is that it looks just like the show. Ho-hum.

I would have much preferred a new ship, new characters, preferably with a 50 plus year jump in time from all of the newer TV series.
Can you imagine the rampant technobabble of another 50 year jump in the Star Trek timeline? Eeek!
Just between us nerds, I think 'Andromeda' was the best premise for a ST series ever and I'm sad that it got shuffled off to another, unrelated program.

I dont mind the reimaginging as the show was made in the 1960's there was vast limits on just what you could so. Sci-fi as a whole has evolved alot from that. I liked Enterprise as well. I saw it as another take, another view of trek and was fine with it. If they can breath new life and wonder into the old story I say go for it.

Just my take, but while I love J.J. Abrams work, I sincerly hope that this is not a reimagining. I love the new ship design, and I think that it will likely get the crap blown out of her during the course of the movie. This leaves it open for the closing scene to be of Enterprise in space dock getting rebuilt in the image of the classic ship. That way both sides can be equally satisfied.

Flamewar, of course. I don't think they're trying to reimagine characters, though. On the contrary, the actors are modeling themselves on the icons.

From what I heard he has plainly stated it is not a reimagining. That he doesn't want to touch what made Trek great. (Of course opinions may vary)
As for the designs, he's trying to capitalize on technology today to remake what was created 40 years earlier. For example, where old modelists made the warp engines cylinders because those were their materials, today we have computers and we can produce more dynamic curves. Where the crew once wore velour, now they have a cool looking material that is is only available with modern textile manufacturing methods....
It's Trek, just 21st century.

The CIA discontinued the use of water torture on Dec. 4th 1978. Their current preferred methods of torture include the use of electricity, sound amplification, oxygen deficiency, and liberal use of psychological deprogramming. So your safe from water torture.

Where's Kumar?? LOL
I see John Cho (aka Harold)is Sulu. I wonder if that means, smoking will be allowed in the break room. LOL
I'm glad they are making a new ST movie but I'll probably wait till DVD for this one. Then again big space epic movies are meant to be seen on the big screen, so who knows.

Yes, but the Trek Pharisees will take anything that is not 'canon' and argue, flame and snark about it ad infinitum. I am so glad I belong to a subculture of geeks that rises above petty arguing about which version of something is bett ... errr nevermind.

I also thought that Andromeda would have made an awsome Trek series. Too bad I can't think up anything more clever than 'I agree" at this time...

Now if we could get an Andromeda movie, that would be great.
That would be awesome! Sidenote: Keith Hamilton Cobb(Tyr Anasazi) is an awesome guy. I got to spend a day with him at a move festival here in town.

Lucky...
I liked the first season and a half of Andromeda. And loved the ship names. Sorry, Defiant doesn't sound as cool as Wrath of Achilies or Balance of Judgement.

Honetly I enjoyed Andromeda as it was. I don't really think it would have made a good Star Trek series, esspecially since it was essentially the same basic plot as Voyager.
Andromeda was an awesome show. I always thought in the back of my mind that it was originally set in the Star Trek universe telling the stories about the collapse and rebirth of the Federation several centuries down the timeline from TNG, et al. I'm probably wrong about that but I wonder...
My guess is that it was put in a different setting because too many people would be upset by the destruction of the Federation.
But then, what do I know?

I can see that to an extent. The Nitzchians are an obvious analog for Kilingons, the Persiads for Vulcans, and so on. The Magog certainly make a good substitute for the Borg. Some of the metaphysical stuff they got into with the Abyss and such just don't fit with Star Trek though. I would love to keep discussing this, but I think we should take it to another thread.

I loved the series and like you really enjoyed the entire first season and the first half of the second season. But then, the first season and a half were written (mostly) and overseen by Robert Hewitt Wolfe, whose departure from the series is felt all the way to the end. The show wasn't the same. I still watched but it just wasn't as good as when he was involved.

Which would kind of be the point. I didn't care a bit about the collapse of whatever government prefaced the series. But if I could have seen the remnants of the Federation, with its now-penitant Klingons and such, I think it would've had more impact.

Just my two cents.
On the whole I'm okay with having new actors play the old crew, but I don't like redoing the enterprise. It cause confusion, to anyone outside of the know, and needless debate for anyone in the know.
Example: If I'm not mistaken Lenored Ninmoy is in the movie as a camio, suggesting that the series and orgional universe all took place. Great, use the enterprise from the 60's, or at lest from the movies (which by the way still holds up fine even by todays special effects standards). If the movie rejects the ST history (ie other films) then fine I guess.
I'm sure the movie will be fine, I just hope they actually put some effort into a story as oppose to effects, but looking at the new ship I have my doubts.

Some will. No doubt.
Others will just thank their lucky stars they get to have another Trek movie.

I agree. Just one little nit to pick though. Wasn't Enterprise built in orbit, because it was incapable of atmospheric entry? I wonder if we will get to see the saucer seperate in this one, since G.R. did say that they could, it was just never shown in the original series.

From all the leaks and rumors I have read, this is what I think is going to happen;
At the end of Nemesis, the Romulan Empire was without leadership, the Praetor and Senate all dead. The new leaders are opening their borders and accepting trade with others.
Some Romulans don't like this and so have decided to take out the Federation. Of course they realize that they don't stand a chance against the Federation today, but what if the Federation did not exist?
They have decided that the key point in history to target is "Captain James T Kirk"
It is their interference in the past that causes an alternate reality to be created. Perhapts some of their future-tech recovered from the attack on the USS Kelvin (Kirk's dad is 1st officer) and we allready know that Spock-Prime (Nimoy) comes back into the past to help Kirk, so that will cause additional "Butterfly Effects", all of which will cause even more divirgences in the timeline.
So just as in comics, where three different Legions of Superheroes teaming up together, we will now have a third Star Trek reality (Gene-verse, Mirror-verse and now the JJ-verse).
| Fletch |
Dark, that's a great theory. The Star Trek producers *love* time travel stories and a divergent timeline would make a great excuse to re-envision the Enterprise's five year voyage.
I can only hope they put this much thought into it instead of just waving their hands and saying "no, this is how it happened..."
| hopeless |
Oh but what if they have already been manipulating events in time ala enterprise?
What if their attempts have been making things worse because when they realise who they have to target he proves an elusive target and survives attempt after attempt without even noticing they're trying to kill him since they need to be subtle about it until the attack on the Kelvin as they know they're running out of time.
I remember a subplot in an early episode of enterprise where the then captain is told of a legendary warrior who cannot be beaten and was mistaken for him.
I always assumed they were references for Kirk and if they do go this way it could explain why things was so warped although not forgive ruining a couple of seasons of Enterprise in the process...
Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything but at least perhaps I can forget about it now...
