Sometimes the pair were on the same page, and other times, the differences between them were illustrated with moments like these. Halsanna did try to restrain herself to a small smirk in the face of her sister's giggling, so used to laughing when 'Vae laughed that she could not help but echo some of her mirth, but at least had the grace to blush lightly at the implications, despite having heard far worse (and in far more detail) at the school. She'd spared her sister the more bawdy of the stories she had heard-- and that was a fair bit, though she suspected those of the entertainer's arts had their own. Armsmen were a brutish, bloodthirsty lot-- or so the rumors said. The entertainers-- well, most times the armsmen got off light.
In the face of drawing their father's attention, Halsanna sobered up, recalling the time she had close that talk, and not wanting to willingly repeat anything near that experience, despite however many years it might have been since that mutually embarrassing day. She pointedly looked away, giving Arhnault a rather transparent shrug, feigning being clueless. Adjunta she glanced at, but it was rather difficult to get an impression from someone whose face was covered.
A look back at 'Vae tried to prompt her for whatever she was going on about, lest others pass their limit of polite courtesy and actually ask what the humor was about.
Ewald Salodar
Ewald chuckles at the lads innocent double-entendre noticing that both girls get the joke.
'So much for vapid fainting Miss Firdaes' he thinks to himself 'married life could be more fun than I thought it was going to be..if I can work out which one is my betrothed that is..damn it Father, why couldn't you have been more specific'
Still something nags at the back of his mind about this man...
"Well the suggestion that we consult with some other mage is a good one..do any of you know of such a one in town?"
Vivaeri Firdraes
"Ahem." Vivaeri coughed after seeing Halsanna's look. She was thankful for her sister's presense; watching Halsanna seemed to be Vivaeri's most dependable way of knowning where to draw the line before offending their father. Regaining her composure, she straightened and said, "Sorry, I just remembered something trivial."
Hearing Ahnault's question, she couldn't resist. "I'm not sure I remember any not known for the quality of their rods.", she said in a business-like tone. "But it shouldn't be hard to find one if there are any. It shouldn't take all of us either. Should some of us head back while the rest keep searching out here?"
Amunrel
"I think you and Sir Oribar ..and perhaps Miss Halsanna(Vi)should go and talk to the wizard..and Me, Miss Vi(Halsanna) and her uncle should make some attempt at finding the cat..or the bat."
"Consider yourself fortunate, where I'm from we have cats... with wings!" Amunrel points out to Arnhault.
"In fact all Taldoran birdlife should be thanking their lucky stars!" Amunrel sighs."Now to the barn or back to town?" Amunrel asks.
Vivaeri Firdraes
"Sounds reasonably like a plan. Watch yourself out here, Vivaeri!" Vivaeri said to her sister. She wasn't too worried. She thought of Halsanna as being capable of taking care of herself out in the countryside. Vivaeri on the other hand would admit that she was a city mouse, through and through.
How long is it to get back to town?
Halsanna Firdraes
Halsanna could not help but give a small snort and shake of her head at her sister's willingness to go along with their uncle in the minor confusion of their names. Not that she was particularly against it, but she knew that this confusion would not last the day, likely. It reminded her of when they were younger, since their father was one of the few people that could easily tell them apart, while the rest constantly got the two of them confused. The two of them being kids, they did not help clarify the issue any, most times.
So she tried to keep the smile on her face free of mischief, and said, "You too, 'sanna." At least with her sister headed back into the city, she at least would be more comfortable. Halsanna could tell that she still was not too fond of long outings away from city or town. That said, she settled her pack with a shrug and looked at her uncle and Ahnault, wondering who was going to suggest the first thing to go look for. If they were lucky, then the cat and bat would be in nearly the same place, but she knew better than to set her hopes on it.
Ewald Salodar
Ewald looks from Amrunel to Halsanna and if his eyes linger longer on the distaff half of the pair then who would blame him.
"I'm still tempted to go looking for the bat in a belfry..but that can wait for the moment...Cats like their comforts...so we need to think somewhere warm and where it can cadge food...an inn kitchen or a bakery or dairy would be the obvious choices..I wonder if we could enlist some of the local urchins to assist as well.." he jingles a few coppers "maybe for a small reward?"
I believe we are right on the edge of town here..it's certainly only a few minutes walk from the inn we started at
Vivaeri Firdraes
After a bit of awkward silence on the way back(Vivaeri began to regret separating from her sister now that she was alone with her father and this strange priest), she had to at least say something. "So, Adjunta...been long in these parts?"
Rolling to get a handle on the best place to look.

"Hmm thats why I asked the farmer's son about any cats, I was wondering why the broad selection of familiars to choose from, whilst I do have family who practice the art I don't recall any of them requiring multiple choices, anyway given the pets were released by the wagon can you smell or hear anything that might draw our missing feline's attention, well other than the rat of course," Amunrel asked.
Adjunta Paul
|
After a bit of awkward silence on the way back(Vivaeri began to regret separating from her sister now that she was alone with her father and this strange priest), she had to at least say something. "So, Adjunta...been long in these parts?"
"My family actually predates Toldoran," Adjunta says, "but we are city people, bureaucrats mainly, and this is my first time visiting this small town I'm afraid. Official business of course. Dreadfully dull though, which is part of the reason I'm out investigating these missing animals, but the roads are the life blood of an empire and my order naturally takes this sort of crime quite seriously.
"Tell me though," Adjunta says as he adjusts his robes, "I understand that you, your sister, your father, and your uncle are all new in town as well. Might I enquirer if you are in town on business? Just passing through? or perhaps you have an estate near by?"
Vivaeri Firdraes
Vivaeri hurriedly answered, trying to put as much spin as she could on the truth without telling an outright lie in front of her father. "Oh, we're not from around here either. We're spending some time away from it all, you know. Just spending time together as a family. There's so much going on and with each of our careers taking us in different directions..." She trailed off, looking sideways at her father and hoping that was enough of the truth to satisfy him.
Halsanna Firdraes
Halsanna could not help but smile softly at her sister getting flustered by Adjunta's question. Despite 'Vae's nervousness, she is calm, speaking with an even tone. "We're on vacation." The smile changed into a wry grin tossed at her sister, and a lighter smile at her father. "..There just is some debate as to how long our vacation should last." It was a calculated risk, her saying that. It was possible that their father might just decide to invoke parental right and drag them back-- but that would mean that they would be abandoning this particular task they were on as well as airing dirty laundry in public.
Well, not that there were many people around to notice, but the principle was the same. "Now, if there are no further objections, we are losing time, and should be getting back to the task that we have accepted." She met eyes with each of them, though 'Vae's look was more of a silent warning 'behave', and their father got a lesser look that carried the same message. Halsanna did wonder about Ned, though. "Are you comfortable traveling with us?" She did hold her next question, wondering if Ned was going to be going with the group she was with, or her sister's.
Ewald Salodar
When he hears the girls explanation of their presence in town Ewald has to fake a coughing fit to cover his laughter.
'Vacation is it' he thinks well that's one word for it I suppose
He accepts the cage from Ned and agrees to meet with him at the Inn where the group first came together.
"In fact Sir" he says addressing Sir Oribar "if it would not impinge on your dignity too much maybe you and the others in our embassy to the arcane could travel back in the cart. It will let the rest of us search the roadsides as we walk back into town"
Regardless of the answer as they walk back towards the settlement he turns to the warrior lass and asks
"So what brought you to the practice of arms...I mean I have met fighting women before, served alongside some on the border too, but none them was of gentle birth"
Halsanna Firdraes
Ahnalt's coughing fit got a raised eyebrow over a cool look, stating without a doubt that she knew his "coughing" was not entirely true. She had let it fall by the time that he had turned back to her, though her eyes were slightly narrowed. His question caused a slight grin, and a chuckle, shaking her head. "I wouldn't let my sister hear you say that, if you want to avoid a lengthy discussion on the inequalities of class, and how Taldor is stifling itself because of it." During the walk, she had pulled her hands from her gloves, tucking them into her belt, and shifted her pack.
"Why, good sir", she began, pitching her voice much like she had heard the ladies at court do, something that irked her to no end. "Do you mean to imply that I am somehow.. abnormal?" Gaining some steam, she set her hands on her hips and fixed him with a look that said she may have taken offense at his question. "After all, us ladies of this rather.. rural court are a lofty bunch, and not prone to taking observations-- however implied -- from a regular country--" Pausing, she seemed at a loss for words, only to scowl, looking ready to launch full off into a tirade, before she stopped and grinned, her imitation of the ladies at court a bit rough, but somewhat adequate.
"My Father", she answered, sobering a bit. Halsanna looked to Sir Oribar and smiled a grateful smile, somewhat reminiscent of the little girl she once was. One hand ran through her hair, as short as it was, brushing a slightly pointed ear before she turned her green eyes back to him. Belatedly, she realized she was probably being watched by her sister, and colored slightly. "When I was younger, I'd always watch over 'Vae while Father practiced with the sword. Always by the end of it, he was hot, tired, and dirty." Halsanna's grin turned a bit wolfish. "Not at all like the practices of the 'delicate' and 'fragile' ladies of the court, who would faint if they pricked their finger sewing, or giggle about the silliest things." She snorted, rolling her eyes in exasperation before looking over the surrounding countryside.
"When we were younger, the ladies-- with which I was starting to dislike associating, due to words making their way through the rumor mill about things ultimately unimportant-- went on an outing in which their escort was subdued, and the lot were robbed at knifepoint." Her face, which had been calm, even slightly thoughtful as she related the story, drew into a small frown, shaking her head in disgust. "All they could do was huddle together in fright, most on the verge of tears if not well into them. After the fact, all they did was cry about losing something pretty of theirs and insult their escorts for not protecting them better." It was obvious, that even looking back, Halsanna disliked what had happened. "I decided then that I did not want to be that kind of a woman, the kind who cried and was helpless without someone to mind her.. Kind of like a pet, don't you think?"
She spared Ahnalt a glance out of the corner of her eye, pausing long enough to give the question some weight, and turning back to look at the clouds in the sky. "So I apprenticed myself to a blacksmith that would take me", she said with a shrug. "That was the furthest I could think of to get away from that right then. The practice of arms was just a logical extension of wanting to play with some of the toys that you make." She gave him a bright grin. "It is also even further from the idea of the 'courtly' lady, so it suits me fine." She probably would not have to elaborate, since she was talking to a man who probably went through a school of his own like she did, and could remember the things that went on there, most of them things that would send a 'proper' courtly lady into fits.
Vivaeri Firdraes
Vivaeri tried to laugh off Adjunta's worries of having offended her, and was thankful for Halsanna's quick explanation. Always cuts straight through a problem, doesn't she? Vivaeri thought with a fond smile.
After a moment of riding onward in the wagon, she tried to eavesdrop on her sister and Ahnault's conversation. Perception: 19 Hearing her sister speaking of her days training, she broke out into a full grin. Still, while this Ahnault fellow seemed alright, she didn't really know that much about him. "Oh, excuse me for a moment." she said casually to Adjunta as she leaned forward in her seat before suddenly rolling herself backwards onto the wagon's floor, so that she was lying on her back as if relaxing, arms and legs crossed, with her head hanging out the back. "It's true you know. She smells absolutely nothing like your typical sheltered noblewoman. We do try to bathe her every now and then, but she really is quite fast."
Okay, gauge his reaction. See if this guy is good enough for her. She was waiting for 'Sanna's reaction as well, whether it involved blushing, another rap to her forehead, or both. Meddling came a bit too easy for her.
Ewald Salodar
Ewalds laughter might well be heard all the way back to town.
"I can well appreciate that...I've had to deal more than a few 'wilting flowers' on my part in the past..I commend you on your solution my Lady. Maybe after this is done we might spar a little..I'm sure we both have tricks we could show the other. Unless, of course, there is a gentleman who might object"
And maybe I'll have a few more tricks up my sleeve than you might imagine..Miss Halsanna he muses to himself having noticed the slip of the tounge that betrays the sisters deception
Halsanna Firdraes
Laughing-- since it was rather hard to not laugh, given her sister's well timed comment, 'Vae earned a swift flick to the end of her nose and and a look that promised that she had earned payback for some time in the future. Especially since she put herself so conveniently within reach for the three of them walking on the road. Vengeance for Halsanna was usually a surprise tickling until the victim conceded, since Vivaeri-- like herself-- was very ticklish.
When Ahnalt had stopped laughing enough to speak, and offered her a chance to spar she nodded. One could only whack on stationary objects and practice forms for so long, and when she could wrangle 'Vae into sparring, she did, though it was nowhere near as often as she would like. His cautious option for a deferral drew a smirk from her that was rather smug, as she thought of the spoiled fop that she was supposed to be engaged to-- assuming that the dandy could make his way out here and keep his rear out of the dirt once he met her and told her who he was-- and shook her head, the smirk changing into a slightly muted smile. "None currently, though the confidence of a man who would worry about the fidelity of his consort because of a spar is someone I hope to never meet."
A lifting of her eyebrows and sideways glance added an unheard, "don't you think?" to the tail end of that sentence.
Ewald Salodar
"Well that sounds like the sort of man who could benefit from a year or two on the frontier chasing Quadiri brigands and any woman who had the same thought wouldn't be worth my attention..I can't stand jealousy over innocent matters"
"Now if some one told me my girl had been sparring with a strange man my first question would be did she beat him? and my second would be by how much?"
Halsanna Firdraes
Halsanna gave a slight grin and a mysterious "Hn", that was mildly approving. She did not mind him. He had little to no preconceptions about her and was smart enough not to voice his opinions on where a "woman should be", should he have any, knew much of the life of armed service, so she could actually talk shop with him if she was so inclined. Granted, she had not really decided on a particular direction that she wanted to go in, given her training, but she still had time. Giving her head the slightest tilt, she raised an eyebrow at her sister-- the side that Ahnalt could not see-- and a slight quirk to her lips that said 'what do you think?'
The natural lull in the conversation bothered her, so she looked to Adjunta, riding up front with her father, and gave in to a curiosity that she had been wondering for a while. "Brother Adjunta", she began, her mind balking at the proper semi-formal mode of address for a cleric of Adbar. "If I may ask, how did you..." again her mind stalled on the proper phrasing. "..how did you find your way into the service of Adbar, if I may be so brazen as to ask?" Of course, she said all of this with a bright smile, and even a slight blush, her curiosity getting the better of her.
...Of course, she still was not as bad as her sister...
Vivaeri Firdraes
Vivaeri wrinkled her nose at her sister's touch, but continued to watch and listen from the back of the wagon, serenely smiling back at her upside-down sister and Ahnault. He seems alright so far. Not pushy. Not completely dull. Well spoken... At Halsanna's questioning look, she simply closed her eyes and shrugged slightly, hoping to disguise the gesture as her simply settling in to catch a nap(the slow rolling of wheels on the road and the rythmic hoofbeats did do that to her sometimes). It was her way of silently saying, "He seems okay. For now at least." She would have to keep feeling this fellow out.
She laced her fingers behind her head after Halsanna asked Adjunta for his story. Vivaeri was more interested in why he chose to hide his face. Probably some scar from an undoubtedly criminal past before he joined the clergy, she thought. Assumptions leaning towards melodrama also came too easily for her. She would have to wait to share her suspicions with her sister.
Ewald Salodar
Ewald walks in silence his eyes scanning the roadsides as they move back towards town. However his mind isn't totally on the job.
'Now then.. he muses ...if Halsanna, as I now know her to be, is my betrothed..will she forgive me my deception. Of course they have tried to decieve me too...and it would have worked if her tongue hadn't slipped. So it all depends on whether she considers my lie to outweigh her sisters. She's the sensible one so it might not be too bad. On the other hand if Vi is my betrothed..well she's a bard and might appreciate the romance in the situation..Sweet barley brew this is like one of those trashy novels my sisters are always reading full off jilted suitors and improbable coincidences...and what they and my Mother will say if I bring a warrior maid or indeed a bard into the house as my bride should be ...amusing to say the least
The uncle seems a rougish type..reminds me of some of the traders I have met on the frontier but I'm not altogether sure I can trust him.As for Sir Oribar I must seek to get him alone at some point and reveal my true identity...he seems somewhat disapproving of his girls being here and I suspect he will be my ally in this. The priest well he has no axe to grind either way..Lord Cayden what would you do...no that's a stupid question isnt it,you'd seduce both of them and then ride off singing lustily leaving them well satisfied...unfortunately I don't have that option

Reading it , Sir Oribar ponders for a while and then turns back to his daughters ' Girls, Something has come up with your grandfather and I must go back to town . I'll be back as soon as possible . Now I want you to stay at the inn near your uncle and wait for me !

"Ah," Adjunta laughs, "that is a very long and very dull story, but I have a short version, and that is that I have always enjoyed travel and people rather then numbers and office. The clergy is a noble profession, entirely keeping with my families long history of civil service, but Abadar asks that I travel the roads and see to trade and commerce.

Halsanna simply nodded, not quite giving the image of the dutiful daughter, but coming close as her Father departed. Once he was on his way, she turned to regard her Uncle with the tiniest look of amusement and an eyebrow subtly raised enough to convey her lightly amusement. While she knew her Uncle to be responsible at times, he was most certainly not someone that she could see in charge like she was used to. She always thought of him as someone that was the kind of person that would casually wave a hand in a general direction and say something along the lines of "You know what you have to do, you don't need my constant supervision.." Definitely a hands-off kind of person.
If you wish, DM, you could make any rolls for Halsanna that may be relevant, without needing to have me roll for her. Quite frankly, I would not mind you making any necessary rolls without waiting for me to roll. I am quite content in writing the character, and dislike breaking up the flow of posts for a single post of a roll with no text. So if rolling for me would make things go faster at any time, please feel free to do so.

Vivaeri was a bit disappointed that Adjunta's story seemed to lean towards the mundane, but at least he didn't fit the stereotypical image she thought of when it came to Abadar's priesthood.
She felt a mix of relief and disappointment when her father was called away. The truth of the matter was, as uncomfortable as their relationship had become, she was grateful that they had been together for a time away from all the courtly politics that hung over their heads back home. "Be careful, Father..." Her moping as she waved goodbye was genuine.
But so was her sidelongs glance and mischievous grin towards her uncle and sister. While the cat's away... Vivaeri was generally a glass-half-full person.
Robin, I'm fine with you rolling as well, mainly because I don't want to hold everyone else up if I forget to make a relevant roll. :P

Adjunta wishes the noble well in his endeavors and thanks him for his help in this familiar matter.
"Also," Adjunta says as the man is preparing to leave, "if you'd like sir I could look in on your daughters while I stay in town. That's if it doesn't interfere with my investigation, I fear that matter is far from closed yet, but your families contribution goes above and beyond that which should be expected from your station. While I can't understand the entirety of the stresses you must be under, the nobility being what it is, I can at least understand some of the concerns."
Adjunta quickly glances at the noble's daughters, "The young ladies are very smart and very resourceful, which is as much a blessing as a curse, and I fear they may be too much for your brother to handle. I cannot offer you any assurances except that I will, if you like, assist your brother in attempting to keep your daughters out of . . . indiscretion, shall we say? It is the best I can offer for you assistance in this matter."
If everyone else is letting you roll for them Robin, I'll let you do the same, it'll avoid confusion as to who's rolling for who.

Vivaeri turned her back to the others to face Halsanna after Adjunta volunteered to be their "chaperone". Oh gods. This has potential... She silently mouthed "oh fun!" to her sister before turning back around.

Halsanna Firdraes
They were back in town, and at the inn, so Halsanna took a few minutes to head upstairs and remove her pack and buckler, setting it on her bed in their room. The crossbow she wavered on, but left behind as well, figuring that in this town that they had already spent more than a week in, such preparations would not be hastily needed in the search for a feline. She did keep her armor on, and the knife in its sheath on her leg over her leathers, but there was no point in carrying excessive weight, not at this particular point in time.
Returning back downstairs, she remembered the look 'Vae had given her and smiled a fair bit tamer than her sister's grin had been, giving her a cautionary look. She was not opposing a bit of fun, not in the slightest, but she was going to keep things rather tame until they got to know their priest companion a bit better. Ahnault, however, was most definitely fair game, her smile changing to something vaguely innocent when she looked to him, then her uncle, and finally Adjunta. She had left just before her uncle said something, and offered him raised eyebrows and a tilt of her head. "I will go check with the children, perhaps they have noticed a cat wandering around?", she offered.

Ewald nodded at Amrunels words.."Mayhaps...We still need to ensure that we speak to a local Mage about familiars."
He turns to the priest.
"Father...would you be willing to take Miss Halsanna and find such a Wizard or Sorcerer...whilst Amrunel talks to the staff here and Miss Vae and myself try and find out if the local children have seen anything that might help us. I give you my word that I'll keep her out of trouble"
He smiles at the leather clad girl as she returns in light order.
"Good idea" he says divesting himself of his extraneous equipment and placing them in the care of the inn keeper until his return

just remember robin we are still using the girls wapped over names..so when I say Vae I mean Halsanna and vice versa
Ewald smiles at the ease with which the girl persuades the kids to tell her things..he distributes a few coppers as a reward and after informing Amrunel of their destination leads her off in that direaction.
"Easier than I thought" he remarks "though I dread having to take a childs new pet away from her..it doesn't seem right somehow"
