Hi guys,
I'm thinking about running a PFS event at next year's OwlCon, held on the Rice University campus February 6th-8th. I need to know how many Pathfinder fans are planning on attending, so I may have an idea of how many tables/time slots i'd need to secure to make it open to all who'd like to play.
Furthermore, i'd like to know which scenarios players have already played, so I can ensure that the scenarios at the convention will be open to the maximum number of participants.
Thank you for your feedback, I hope we can have a great time sharing in some Pathfinder goodness!
Derek
(also, anyone interested in GMing, let me know...)

Dude, I need you to go to the OwlCon site and register your preferred time slots. I'll e-mail you my submission so you can mirror it. I'll get you up to speed on everything you need to know, and Mr. Frost said he could e-mail me some temp IDs for new players.
Don't worry, I won't let you go in unprepared (we have almost three months to prep, after all...).

Have you heard of this Yahoo group it is for Houston area gamers
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/clag_houston/
They set up game days all the time it might be a good place to recruit players/judges
Regards
Rich
OwlCon is a great con by the way I had the good fortune to go back in 2006 it is a shame that February no longer is good for me for traveling.

When do I need to make the final decision if I will be able to run a game?
I'm pretty damned sure I will be able to make it there (with it only being a three hour drive), but I'm not sure how things will run. I don't want to commit before I am certain that I can.
P.S. Oh yeah, and couch-surfing for the weekend will be much appreciated, though if it comes down to it, I can get a hotel. I presume I'll see you in chat soon enough that we can talk about it.

Don't worry, his couch surfing will be comfortable enough, it just can be a headache about where you get to park at his gated apartments. :P

Ok, pre-registration starts December 5th. We have plenty of timeslots, and I could probably still use a couple of GMs, if anyone is interested.
Can you say which scenarios you're offering? I might be up to make a trip out your way to also see a friend for this, but it's less likely if it's just scenarios 1-4, since I've played them.

I am trying to make 8 scenarios available, I'll have a better idea which ones after I finish my Xmas shopping and have some extra scratch to download which ones I want. If one particularly intersts you, let me know and i'll make it happen :)

I would love to say "I'll be there" but unfortunately Feb 6 is the expected due date of our second daughter...
Since I would like to continue gaming in the future and not have my wife either burn all my gaming materials (heat the house for the winter!) or cause me grievous bodily harm I am going to have to miss this one.
Great Sorrow and Consternation though!

My main goal is to find ones I haven't played. I got 1-4 at GenCon, and I may have more by OwlCon time, depending on the answers I get in the MarsCon thread. For now, I'd guess the higher the better.

Right on. I'll keep that in mind for sure. I was thinking of running Frozen Fingers since I've already been through it as a player, but I was also going to buy and prepare something else as well to accommodate players like you who might have already done the introductory four.

Well, #13 & #14 are due out just 10 days before the con. If you can swing the short prep time, it seems like they'd be the most desirable, other things being equal.

Any updates on what scenarios are offered, and which ones in each time slot?
I'm going to download a few tonight, and I have no problem with DLing #13 and 14 when they're released. We have four slots, and three GMs (Daigle, you're in, right?), so that allows the potential for eight different scenarios to run during the con, at different tiers, if needed.
So, if y'all can, let me know your preferences for scenarios, and I'll grab what y'all want (I'll grab two tonight - probably 11 and 12, just so I can start prepping something, and leave the rest open to y'all, if you can let me know in a reasonable time)
:)
P.S. The con still needs volunteers (badly, they only have a third of their slots filled as of today), two shifts gets free access (including special events), free snacks during your shift and a free con tee-shirt. Go to the link above and let them know if you're interested!
P.P.S. Daigle, let me know what you're DLing, so I don't duplicate :)

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!
Second, Kirth's wife has a new schedule, so he and I are going to change to a weekday game for his game. This opens up a seat in our Sunday game, and I'd like you to be the guy that sits in it, if you can swing that. E-mail me and let me know :)

Owlcon is just around the corner, and the preregistration ends on January 30,2009. As of today it appears that at least two of the scenarios going to be offered are #11 The Third Riddle, and #12 Stay of Execution. Houston Derek was going to order two more but I haven’t talked to him about which ones he ordered. As of today (1-27-09) there are 2 slots open in all four time slots. Hopefully, we will have an additional GM for any overflow. I look forward to seeing those of you who can make this event, and killing your PC’s. OOOPS, did I say that out loud. Never Mind.
logic_poet |
I will be at this one, and I know a friend of mine is also interested, but did not preregister.
He's also never played PFS, so he'll have to generate this week.
Are you planning to marshal folks here, or at the tables?
silverhair2008 |
I will be at the con early enough that I should be able to be found. Just look for a "Grouchy Old Fart" with long silver/gray hair and glasses. I will try to help identify myself as a PFS GM. I don't have any idea how I will do that yet, but I will come up with something. Hope to see you there.
Just my 2 cp.

Well, the guy at the end of the table with all the dice, the dolls and the adventure is usually identified as the DM...
I'm still debating whether or not China and I are going to go to that concert with Kirth and his wife Friday night, so I'll only be there Friday to pick up my stuff, most likely. So, mustering here is fine with me.

I think you'll be ok, only one of the slots filled up before pre-reg was closed. We will probably run two scenarios during two of the Saturday slots, so everyone should get a chance to play.
Side note: If I can find the time, I'm thinking about running PFS games at Midnight Comics (Westheimer & Hwy. 6) some time in the future. I'll keep y'all posted on that.

Dear Houstonderek,
Thanks for the information. Logic_Poet and I look forward to (hopefully) meeting you at Owlcon.
Cheers,

Anybody know where the games will be at Rice?
For mustering: I'm playing F Elf Rogue 2 (Osirion) and WW4Pres is playing M Elf Cleric (Desna) 1 (Andoran).
I won't know until I go this evening and pick up my pass and tee shirt. I'll post here when I get home this evening.
Remember folks, the first scenario (I think it'll be The Third Riddle - Jerry's running that one) begins at 10am! Try to get there early so Jerry and I can review character sheets and whatnot. Hopefully, this evening Joshua will e-mail me the temp IDs we'll need.

Just to confirm, Derek, you're intending to run two different scenarios in the Sat Night and Sunday morning slots, for a total of four different ones, right? I got one in each of the four slots and I'd hate to have double booked a repeat.

I just finished attending Owlcon in Houston, TX. I ran two PFS scenarios at the con. The first one I ran was The Third Riddle. From preregistration the game slots were filled with 6 players. As it turned out HoustonDerek and I found out that people were being turned away from signing up. Luckily the Gaming Coordinator for the con had a cancellation for the room next to us. So we were able to run a second scenario. I’ll let HoustonDerek post about that though.
One problem we had was that we did not take time to generate any 1st level PC’s, so the new people had to take time from the slot to generate their own. That ate up about 30 to 45 minutes of time and increased the frustration on everyone’s part. So a recommendation is to have some pregen PC’s for people that are interested in seeing what Pathfinder is all about. A side result of this curiosity is that there were some players that did not acquire a PFS number that we could put on the coordinators’ form, and they did not pick up their scenario chronicle sheets. Another recommendation is to post in your gaming notice that if they do not have a PC already then they need to show up about 1 hour earlier than the time scheduled for the game. For home run sessions this is not a problem.
Now to the review of the games, for The Third Riddle it was frustrating to try to run this in the time allotted. Even taking into consideration that I had used up about 30 to 45 minutes of game time with PC creation it seemed that I needed to somewhat railroad the PC’s toward the end to get them to finish on time. My group went to the Necromancer test first. As I described the room I said that they could see the chain running from the area of the fountain but could not tell what it was attached to. They could see there were several feet of chain lying on the ground and they could see the collar and attached chain to the shadow but couldn’t tell what went where. Eventually they figured out that the chain went to the Shadow. A question comes to mind, if they had continued cranking the handle of the winch would the Shadow have been drawn to the ceiling? The only reference mentions that if they continue for 8 rounds the Shadow is withdrawn to the fountain. However, it is also mentioned that the Shadow has access to the entire room. So if the Shadow has access to the entire room which require approximately 40-50’ of chain, how would drawing it back to the fountain allow the PC’s to fill the bowls with no hindrance?
The second scenario I ran was Stay of Execution. Again I had a full house, and very few players were ready with their PC’s. The biggest problem my players encountered was trying to figure out how to persuade the Gargoyle to allow them in and out of the prison with only one book. That was handled relatively easily. They got in with the one book and fought the Gargoyle to get out. This one ran within the time slot if the players would have had the necessary PC’s ready. There was more time spent trying to talk to townsfolk than getting into the prison. They had an idea of the Cleric entering to give “Last Rights” to any “unfortunate” prisoners that might be dying with the rest of the party being his bodyguards. This scenario ran well within the time slot and with few scenario relayed problems, mostly player/party related problems.
Overall I think the scenarios ran fine as written with just the time concern for The Third Riddle. I will agree that drawing a cross-sectional view of the Evoker room did help to explain the layout to the players. The few comments that I heard were that everyone enjoyed the experience and the Gaming Coordinator for the con said they had heard compliments about the scenarios. My only concern is that I did not understand how the sheets were to be filled out from the Guide. Perhaps it was my inability to grasp the instructions. I will leave it at that. Well maybe one comment, perhaps give an example of how the chronicle should look after the scenario is finished? One other question was asked about height and weight chart, but I explained that at present they should use the charts in the PHB.
All in all, I had fun and the players had fun. That is the main goal. I look forward to doing this again next year. I will be better prepared too.
Just my 2 cp.
