All I can say is 'good' that there aren't any - my players' characters are the heroes, not some writer's idea of what makes a 'cool' character.
I agree with this opinion, let the heroes create the Icon. The DM creates a few of his own but including the iconic 'Bad' guys but the players become the new Icons.
That's how most of the Icon Characters were created...Mordenkeinen, Rary, Bigby were all PC's before Icons so why not start again.

I actually rather like the way 4E went about it - they have a number of little references to former iconics scattered throughout the books (among the suggested names, in various pictures, etc), but had no specific iconics that were the central point of the edition.
Except, perhaps, for our friend, our monster, the Gnome.

I recall reading somewhere that they intentionally decided not to have iconics for 4E because their artists got sick of drawing the same characters over and over. Or at least, partly because of that. I'm pretty sure most of the Regdar art (and other similar depictions of 3E iconics) are because they recycled a bunch of 3E art.
