Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Welcome to Six Monks Bar.
How the tradition started is lost in the lore of different academies but once each season, promising young martial artists from the local schools journey to the center of Absalom and meet in what is now called 'Six Monks Bar'. Six walk in. Four are carried out. The remaining two earn status and prestige for the remainder of their studies. Each school boasts of several champions and the legends of their fights are passed down from generation to generation.
The barkeep has asked only one thing ... that the monks stay away from the kegs behind the bar. To ensure that that wish is respected, he keeps a loaded crossbow to be aimed at any monk that makes a move for the kegs. He usually has reason to fire it.

Found Weapons:
Table leg: 1d6* Crit×2 — 2 lb. Bludgeoning
Chair leg: 1d4* Crit×2 — 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Sharp Chair leg: 1d4 Crit×2 — 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Pewter beer stein (thrown): 1d4* Crit×2 10 ft. 1 lb. Bludgeoning
Ceramic beer keg (thrown): 1d8* Crit×2 10 ft. 3 lb. Bludgeoning -- Two-handed weapon***
Knives: 1d4 Crit19-20/×2 10 ft. 1 lb. Piercing or slashing
Chair: 1d6* ** Crit×2 10 ft. 3 lb. Bludgeoning -- Two-handed weapon***
Table: 1d8* ** Critx2 10 ft. 6 lb. Bludgeoning -- Two-handed weapon***
* The weapon deals nonlethal damage rather than lethal damage.
** The chair becomes unusable after doing 6 points of damage and table becomes unusable after doing 8 points of damage.
*** "Throwing a light or one-handed weapon is a standard action, while throwing a two-handed weapon is a full-round action.
Breaking a table or chair to gain a weapon is a standard action and requires doing 4 points of damage to the chair or 6 points of damage to the table. No attack roll is necessary.
"Any creature that uses an improvised weapon in combat is considered to be nonproficient with it and takes a –4 penalty on attack rolls made with that object." (PRPG p. 100)
Some acrobatics checks you might end up making:
Running along the bar: DC 7
Running along the railing (between the raised area at the front and the main room): DC 15
Move through a threatened area 15 + opponent’s base attack bonus
Move through an enemy’s space 20 + opponent’s base attack bonus
Jumping from table to table (due to tippiness and beer puddles):
5 feet 7
10 feet 12
15 feet 17
20 feet 22
Greater than 20 feet +5 per 5 feet
Jumping from floor to table: DC 12
If you fail this check by 4 or less, you can attempt a DC 20 Ref lex save to grab hold of the other side
after having missed the jump. If you fail by 5 or more, you fail to make the jump and fall (or land prone, in the case of a
vertical jump). Creatures with a base land speed above 30 feet receive a +4 racial bonus on Acrobatics checks made to jump
for every 10 feet of their speed above 30 feet.
One more houserule: Picking up an object counts as 'drawing a weapon' (replaces a move action). However, even if you have a BAB of +1, you can not pick up a table as a free action.
Draw or Sheathe a Weapon
Drawing a weapon so that you can use it in combat, or
putting it away so that you have a free hand, requires
a move action. This action also applies to weapon-like
objects carried in easy reach, such as wands. If your
weapon or weapon-like object is stored in a pack or otherwise
out of easy reach, treat this action as retrieving
a stored item.
If you have a base attack bonus of +1 or higher, you may
draw a weapon as a free action combined with a regular
move. If you have the Two-Weapon Fighting feat, you
can draw two light or one-handed weapons in the time it
would normally take you to draw one.

Misthing Gosmack |
"Then I flip over table, and grab one of them, and slam him down on table leg, pinning him like bug!" Misthing enthuses to her short companion, hands waving as she 'describes' the scene, voiced raised to unseemly levels as she gets all excited for the upcoming battle.
"Is clever, yes? Breaking hands and feet take too long." she says, nodding sagely at her own counsel.
They've almost reached the bar, but it looks like the others got there first. Her face falls into a comically-exaggerated look of woe. "Me sorry if me slow you down, little foot."
Lil' Jakie |

"Is no problem. Flipping tables might be good,... especially if they are on the table."
Tallis Kotellos |
A stable? No, I'm unstable. Where am I?
*Falls into a hay stack*
"Hey, Tallis, howsabout we get down to Six Monks Bar? I need a drink, I don't feel too good."
"Drunk, we're inside the bar. Get your head out of the bottle and look around, will you? Why did your parents name you 'A Drunk Monk' anyway? It's like they wanted you to be an alcoholic ascetic."
In space F1
Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Although the drunk monk may have forgotten why he's there, everyone else knows. This is the night that the six monks fight.
I have posted a map. I think I have your positions correct.
ROUND 1 Initiative:
Noisy Cricket School -Lil Jake -- 20
The Conniving Frog -Drunk Monk 18
Leaping Monkey School -Ilil - 16
Leaping Monkey School -Gunnom 13
The Conniving Frog -Tallis 12
Noisy Cricket School -Misthing Gosmack 12
There is some real symmetry to this initiative order.
Gunnom |
Gunnom and Illil make their entrance through the southern doors, stopping just inside to watch the other monks enter through the other doors.
Checking out the location and the other combatants she leans over to Illil, speaking: "Oh, some handsome man there! Me hope one try tackle me!"
Lil' Jakie |
As I stride into the bar, arms akimbo, I glance around, my eyes just a little higher than the tables.
"NOISY CRICKET!" I yell fiercely, "We are HERE! Soon you shall NOT BE HERE!"
Then with a nod to my tall companion, I grab a knife off the nearest table and try to jump from a standing position onto the table (E7). Unfortunately, it is not my best effort. I bounce up, just not high enough, my long braid whipping up and down in the air.
I end round 1 in E6, holding a knife, ready to throw it.
A Drunk Monk |
"Noisy Crickets?!?! I HATE those bastards!!! C'mon you little kids, and let Drunk show you how to really party". With this, Drunk Monk grabs a nearby chair, and attempts to sling it across the room at Lil Jake, unfortuantly, due to his drunk nature, it shatters, not even reaching halfway across the bar.
I think everyone should have a harmless entrance before we begin initiative.

I think everyone should have a harmless entrance before we begin initiative.
This is round 1. To keep the pace on PbP games, I sometimes cut corners. In this case, anyone who hadn't posted a witty line in the first 24 hours, goes straight to the 1st round of combat. If you want to see if that chair hits anything, roll on invisible castle.
A Drunk Monk |
Ilil |
Ilil sees an opportunity to grab the high ground. She moves to J1, attempting to jump clear over the table, and then attempts to grab the torch on the wall.
Jump: d20+9=25, Strength check (if needed): d20-1=6
Not sure how the torch is mounted, so I rolled a strength check if it is secured. Also, might need some stats for using a torch. Should I use the 3.5 rules as a club or blinding touch?
Misthing Gosmack |
Hearing Gunnorm speaking so familiarly about Lil' Jakie, Misthing is incensed.
"Back off, skank! Dance wif your own date!"
She seems to have completely forgotten that this was a martial arts competition and not a school dance...
Misthing moves quickly to the table at the intersection of H7 and I8, smacks her meaty hands down on it and attempts to flip up into a handstand, over the rail and onto the table at J7.
Option 1 -> If successful, she strikes a pose. Possibly a martial arts pose. Possibly she still thinks this is a dance off...
"Come dance wif me, honey." she growls to the other half-orc female.
Option 2 -> If unsuccessful, it's really embarassing and she's gonna flip out and kill all of the witnesses. She'll save anyone who laughs for last...
Gunnom |
I suppose Gunnom is going before Misthing? Gunnom has a higher Initiative.
Gunnom looks after Ilil, jumping over the table and grabing the torch behind it, when he hears Misthing 'defending' her partner. "The little one your boy? Or you wanna score with me?" she shouts back in the Orcish tounge. "Come here when you wan some of me!" she continues, while walking over to the table J7 grabing a beer stein and throwing it in the near of the other half orc.
Attack and damage against Misthing with thrown beer stein +0base+4dex-6range (1d20-2=5, 1d4+3=4)
Tallis Kotellos |
"Wait, we started fighting? I really need to pay attention more" states Tallis under his breath as he moves over and picks up a beer stein, then casually throws it at Little Jakie.
1d20+3=11
moved to E2
Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Lil Jake attempts to leap onto the table but ends up somewhere beside it, knife in hand.
The Drunk Monk grabs a chair and throws it across the room hitting Lil' Jakie.
He rolled a 20. The target is within 5 range increments. A straight line can be drawn from the square he's in to the square Lil Jakie is in. It's a hit. As far as confirming the critical goes, you have -4 because you are not proficient, -8 because of the 4 range increments, and -4 for the cover provided by the column. So, you can make another roll to confirm a crit at -16. Also, please roll for damage. 1d6+str modifier.
Ilil runs across the room, leaping over the table and ignoring the knife. She grabs the torch off the wall and lands safely. This is why they call it the 'Leaping Monkey School'.
The torch does 1d3 bludgeoning damage plus 1 point of fire damage (+str modifier). (PRPG beta, p. 115)
Gunnom throws a beer stein in the direction of Misthing, wasting beer but not coming near the half-orc.
Tallis moves over to another table picks up a beer stein and throws it at Lil Jakie. It misses.
Note that picking up a beer stein replaces a move action as I'm counting it as 'drawing a weapon'. These attacks would not have hit no matter what you rolled. Drunk Monk's was allowed because he only took a 5' step.
An incensed Misthing tries to use the table to spring her up and over the railing onto higher ground. NOt sure if the map makes it look higher or lower. ;-). She seems pretty ticked at the railing right now. She lands in I7.
ROUND 2 Initiative:
E6 -- Noisy Cricket School -Lil Jake -- 20
G2 -- The Conniving Frog -Drunk Monk 18
J1 Leaping Monkey School -Ilil - 16
J7 Leaping Monkey School -Gunnom 13
E3 The Conniving Frog -Tallis 12
I7 Noisy Cricket School -Misthing Gosmack 12
Gunnom |
Gunnom sees Misthing wanting to come up to her, not jumping high enough to go over the railing. She can't help herself but laugh out loud at the result. "You wan somthin? Me give you somethin! Here!"
With that Gunnom lifts the table Move action and let's it crash down on the other female half-orc Standard action.
Melee attack and damage with table against Misthing (1d20+3=12, 1d8+3=4)
Lil' Jakie |
I'll take the damage from the chair off when it is rolled.
Surprised by being hit by a chair, I shake myself and throwing my knife at Tallis, I move behind the pillar (f6) as I try to formulate a plan and figure out what my companion is doing.
The knife flies high and thunks into the wall near the door.
Thrown Knife: (1d20+2=9) [-4 for improvised weapon, +4 dexterity, +1 small, +1 thrown weapon (halfling bonus)]
Misthing Gosmack |
Misthing sees the table come crashing down towards her and retaliates with a Flurry of Blows at Gunnorms leg.
http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/1738349/ Ah, Invisible Castle, my old enemy. I would have missed her if I'd taken a single attack, there had been no cover, and she was stunned...
Tallis Kotellos |
My action when my turn comes up.
Tallis then picked up and threw another tankard. Unfortunately, his righteous fury made the tankard swerve wide.
I rolled lower than last time, so I didn't even bother linking to it.
Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Tarren the Dungeon Master wrote:Okay, Ilil, make your attack and we'll move on to the next round.Who am I attacking? I thought I used up two move actions? I was asking for torch stats for later...
That was round 1, right? This is round 2. Drunk Monk has not taken an action this turn.
Take your action and we will move on.
The torch does 1d3 bludgeoning damage plus 1 point of fire damage (+str modifier). (PRPG beta, p. 115)
Ilil |
I attempt to hand-over the railing in one smooth motion, leaping to the ground below. Moving five feet forward, I attack Drunk Monk with my torch.
"Ooo-ooo-ah!"
Climb (swing over the railing?): d20+2=20; Jump (avoid falling damage): d20+9=17; Attack (added an extra +1 by mistake): d20+2=16;
Damage if hit: d3-1=1 + 1 fire.
Wasn't sure how to handle swinging over the rail, so went ahead with a Climb check. Let me know if you want to change things.
Lil' Jakie |
Deciding to leave Misthing to her own battle, I roll around the post I was hiding behind, tumble low and between two chairs and leap up onto the table. (E4/E3) This time, though it's still not my best jump ever, I manage to land on the table.
Spinning around on one foot, I snap a kick at the man I had missed with the knife (Tallis).
"NOISY CRICKET KICK!"
Kick attack (high ground): (1d20+5+2=22)
Damage: (1d4=3)
My foot connects.
Lil' Jakie |
Oops forgot to include my acrobatic check in my last post...
acrobatic check: (1d20+10=15)
Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Lil' Jakie throws his knife at Tallis and then moves behind the pillar.
Tallis shouts with surprise and throws a mug at LJ, who has already slipped behind the pillar.
Drunk Monk is surprised by the fact his chair actually hit someone.
Ilil, leaps over the railing and attacks drunk monk with his torch, missing.
Gunnom awkwardly throws a table at Misthing.
Misthing thrashes at Gunnom's leg but ends up punching the struts supporting the railing.
ROUND 3 Initiative:
F6 -- Noisy Cricket School -Lil Jake -- 20 -- ALREADY ACTED (SEE ABOVE)
G2 -- The Conniving Frog -Drunk Monk 18
J1 Leaping Monkey School -Ilil - 16
J7 Leaping Monkey School -Gunnom 13
E3 The Conniving Frog -Tallis 12
I7 Noisy Cricket School -Misthing Gosmack 12
To speed things up a bit, we are only maintaining initiative order for one more round. In round
4, it will be the order that you post but still only one round's worth of actions per round. Okay?
Tarren the Dungeon Master |
Ack. Tarren, if you click on my rolls the result for my attack was actually 17. I noted the "extra plus 1" bit to account for why I put 16 in my post. So, to clarify, I actually hit AC 16.
I misunderstood. Thought you meant you hit 15.
Correction: Ilil whacks Drunk Monk with the torch.2 points of damage.
Gunnom |
Misthing Gosmack |
Misthing steps back into H7, then H6, then up the stairs (I5, costs double), then into J6, from which she launches a single punch at Gunnorm's kidney.
"BLOW TO THE 'EAD!" she shouts, with no apparent regard for how that isn't even close to what she's actually doing...
Whether she connects or not, she pulls her fist back and goes into a freaky dance pose, standing on one leg with her hands up in the air and facing away from the sides of her face like antlers or the branches of a tree.
Tallis Kotellos |
"Crouching Bullfrog STRIKE!"
Tallis sends a quick strike at the annoying halfling's knee.
1d20+3=17, 1d6+3=5 Assuming this hits, it is also a Scorpion Strike. Make a dc 13 Fort. save, or have speed reduced to 5 ft per move.
Tallis then tumbles away from Jakie, saying "Lets see you kick me again with only one leg!"
1d20+6=24 Moves to C2
