The door opens to reveal a small chamber, which is empty but for the finely crafted ancient battleaxe that hangs on the opposite wall.

"No, that doesn't look suspicious at all," murmurs Sandros dryly.

Glad to see you are still with us, my friend. That new job must be tying you in knots. Have you looked into the plans in the other Barakus game of late?

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Miss , Is there any magic on the room other than the weapon ?

There isn't.

Assuming Royl tells us which she sensed...

"Transmutation, eh?" Sandros muses. "Some sort of permanent telekinesis effect?" He shakes his head. "Regardless, I don't like the idea of leaving a flying killer axe here for the next poor fools to open the door and wind up a head shorter. What do you think?"

Kill the killer axe. But how?

Female Human Barbarian 7

"I could just grab hold of it and keep it from flying around", the barbarian muses.

Male Human Druid 2

Perhaps I could summon a nature’s ally? A monkey perhaps, and send into the room? It will only last for two rounds. What do you think?

"It would at least tell us what we're dealing with," Sandros says, nodding.

There is nothing to guarantee that it would stop with the monkey, however; Sandros isn't probably going to think of that, though.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara begins to get fidgety (which is always dangerous) as no-one seems to be doing anything.

Male Human Druid 2

OK, so I summon monkey. Anyone wants to to anything before I start.
I guess I cast speak with animal before I go... so I can tell the monkey what to do. Shall I tell the monkey to grab the axe?

As the monkey appears Ka'kara just laughs, "You all do realize that the beheaded remains are behind us right? I don't think it's going to stop with the monkey and the thought of it flying around on a magic axe is going to be a great story for Grosh, don't you think Lenna?"

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

A few words in Monkey later, the monkey happily enters the room and starts fidgeting with the axe, looking at you quizzically.

What was it supposed to be doing with the axe?

You got it.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara can't help but throw back her head and laugh as the little monkey wobbles over and then hands the axe to its master, "Well, that was all for nothing." She then steps into the room to look around.

Male Human Druid 2

Chris grabs the axe and says: nature fooled by magic. I hate this. Does anyone want this,... this, ...this junk?

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

I would not say no but should not we wait until the wizards do their thing and we determine what this axe actually do ?

Mahaffy wrote:

"Hmm... I'm not much good at this, but I'll try!"

Roylenna concentrates on another Detect Magic while studying the axe closer (in Chris' hands rather than on the far wall).

Appraise 1d20+6=11

Nope, not much good at this at all. Is this something she could have taken 20 on?

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat
Roylenna Brenoien wrote:

No, she couldn't.

There is nothing else of interest in the room. Are you keeping the magic axe and where do you want to go next?

Female Human Barbarian 7

By nothing of interest, does that include any further secret doors? I believe Mahaffy stated a certain interest in being thorough.

Ka'kara gives a loud sigh, "Nothing dangerous here at all, wonder why no-one took the axe before now." She shrugs and you can tell the thought has already left her mind, "Let's go look past the goblin areas."

She in fact means the area opposite the ziggurat that our fallen paladin friend was on. So turn right instead of left.

I've been meaning to pick up identify...

Sandros frowns at the seemingly harmless axe. "I remain wary of that thing," he says, but does not object if someone else wants to use it.

There is also back toward the mist demon. There was some sort of passage or ledge back there, wasn't there?

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

No, no secret doors. There was indeed a ledge by the mist demon but there were no visible exits.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

The halfling shrugs, "Well, we're down here, we might as well look into the areas we've not yet seen."

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara nods at her sisters support and heads off.

Heads off through the weasel's area to the corridor opposite the ziggurat.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

After only twenty feet, the corridor splits into a T-section, with two sets of stairs going down, one straight ahead and one to the left. The stairs both seem to turn, the left one going right and the one straight ahead to the left, possibly to meet.

Strangely, the ceiling is level in both places, making for a considerable ceiling height as the stairs descend.

Left or straight ahead?

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Let me go first . A good place for traps , I think

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Game stalling, initating standard procedure...

As you cautiously proceed down the stairs with Mahaffy searching as you go, suddenly four winged horrors, like cat-sized mosquitoes, sweep down at you. Roll for initiative.

I was waiting for Mahaffy to "go first" and tell us what he was doing.

Initiative 1d20+3=11

Male Human Druid 2

Initiative 1d20+2=17

Initiative (1d20+4=17)

Seems like a good time for burning hands, Royl!

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Mahaffy was a little too intent on his work
Init 10

Point taken. Don't stand in front of me! ;-)

Female Human Barbarian 7

Initiative: 1d20=4

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

...and I was waiting for you to choose which staircase to descend.

The stirges go at 7, so everyone except Ka'kara and Proteus gets to act first. Give 'em hell!

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

If she can speak before the others act:

"Let me see if I can dissuade them! Stay back for the moment!"

And she casts Burning Hands on as many of the creatures as she can manage in a 15' cone. Fire damage 2d4=5

If the others have engaged with one of the beasts before she can get her spell off, she will use her Heavenly Fire ability instead:

Attack 1d20+6=24, Damage 1d6+2=7 Only effective if they are evil, of course.

Sandros will delay until after Royl's spell.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

Roylenna unleashes a cone of fire that envelops the flying pests, leaving three out of four badly singed and wobbling in the air. They return to their nest somewhere in the rafters. If you have any missile weapons ready you could pick them off, but they won't be bothering you again anytime soon.

140 xp each.

As you continue your descent, you notice that the stairs meet on a small mezzanine. The ceiling height is about 30 feet at this point, but there are no visible exits. Nor does Mahaffy find any traps.

Elf secret door sense (1d20+3=5)

Sandros looks around the chamber, confused. "This makes no sense," he murmurs. Brow furrowed, he glances around several times, then suddenly looks up toward the now-distant ceiling, squinting into the darkness. "Maybe there's something up there...?" he mutters to himself.

Roylenna moves to stand next to him and sends her always-present Dancing Lights upward.

Male Dwarf Rogue 5

Mahaffy does also check for secrets doors ... ( + 2 for stonework bonus)

Ka'kara shakes her head in disbelief, "What sort of peoples create such a place and for what reasons?" As the others carefully scour the area searching for clues she watches the ceiling in case anymore of those flying things decide they may make a good meal.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

There are no secret doors within reach, but Mahaffy spots a suspicious-looking crack about 20 feet up on the wall.

Black Tom wrote:

Does the wall look climbable?

Yes, it's a DC 20 climb.

Black Tom wrote:

That's probably Ka'kara then... Sandros has a +6 and Mahaffy a +7, but she's got a +8.

Also, for reasons I can't technically discuss, I'm going to be a lot quieter on the boards for the next week or so. I will try to keep in touch with what's happening here, though.

Female Human Barbarian 7

It takes awhile for her to see where Sandros and Mahaffy are pointing out but eventually she nods. Taking to the wall with the same zeal she shows when facing any other enemy, she attacks and conquers her stony foe.

Climb: 1d20+8=25

I hope nothing bad has happened to you. You are a nice person. Hope to hear from you again and I hope you are OK. Best wishes to you

No worries - it's actually quite a good thing, it's just taking up a lot of my time at the moment. But like I said, I'm around, and I'm getting close to done with what I'm working on at the moment anyway.
