Ka'kara Furyheart wrote:
Did Ka'kara end up with that CMW potion? Last I heard she had. May become important later.

Time warp to the private discussion with Ka'kara:

Spoiler:
"Ka'kara, you will never have to be alone again. Unless you choose to be. I think there is a term for those that go to war together, but it escapes me - we have done that and will do it again. We are family now."

She looks to the "boys" and assures them that Ka'kara will be fine as soon as they can patch her up a bit. Roylenna reserves her healing for the fight that lays ahead.

Back to preparations for the battle:

Roylenna will come in as part of the "second wave" but she will start the action near the door to minimize how long it takes her to actually get into the action. Maybe tucked up tight against the side of the hallway just beyond the battering ram wielders?

"I can always increase the size of one of our warriors, but I think we'd best find out how much room they have within first. An ogre's size will not help in a badger's burrow."

Or would the ram increase in size and do more damage to the door if the wielder was enlarged? Interesting thought.

Does everyone have their goodies from the loot allocation? Let me know - in the discussion thread would be best - so I can clean up the character profile for Roylenna. Thanks.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

It makes sense that Ka'kara would have the the CMW potion since she is the one in the party with the most hit points.

Royl, I have written down Proteus' loot so you can remove it from your list.

Black Tom

Spoiler:

I subtracted 110 gold pieces in addition to the other funds spent from the gold that Proteus had. 10 gp went to the Highmount's for the care and feeding of Atlas. I will request that they keep him working so that he doesn't lose any of his training. An additional 100 gp in offerings (beyond tithing) went to the temple of Asclepius.

If the group appears ready, Proteus suggests that we move to the room where the dire weasel attacked us and make our preparations there.

"Sounds good," Sandros nods.

I've got my stuff too, Ainvar, so you can delete at leisure.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

I honestly have no idea where we are now, actually. Loot list has been pruned, awaiting confirmation from the others.

"I think that's a great idea, Proteus. Do we know anything about what lies beyond the goblins' door? I don't remember if the schemer told us anything or not..."

"Yes, what do we know of these goblins? Numbers, strengths, abilities?"

He looks at Sandros, "You are right-handed, are you not? Perhaps if I were on your left, I might shield that side for you."

With a pointed look at Ka'kara, he says, "We must stay together, move with purpose. If we know nothing else, we know that goblins generally find strength in numbers. We must not let their numbers overwhelm us by dividing our group."

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

"Oh, that's right! What was it Sandros taught me in the ogre's cave?"

She looks up and taps her chin with her forefinger as she recounts,

Sandros Highmount wrote:
Conversely, then, when numbers are on the side of your opponent, it is best to find narrow, confining ground on which to meet them. The ogre had this when we faced him; it was what I was attempting when I told Thorak to fall back to the doorway in the crypt. Doing this can minimize or entirely negate the numbers advantage your foe holds. If this is not possible, even fighting with your back to a wall, or better yet in a corner, can reduce your exposure, and prevent you from having to face too many foes at once. Such moves are dangerous, of course, because they also prevent you from being able to move or flee if needed, but they may be your only option. Alternatively, with four people fighting together, their backs to one another, you can fight with the knowledge that your allies will not leave you exposed – this a very strong formation for a small group of warriors, and can withstand assaults far more easily than those same four could, spread out.

It was so well done, it deserved repeating. Who says halflings never pay attention? Oh, shiny!

"Yes, we do. Here it is on the map." It's basically the top middle and top left parts of the map.

"The only place we can really make a stand would be after the rooms with the arrow slits. We've got to get out of the first two murderous corridors as quickly as possible."

Meeting Rana's gaze unwaveringly, "Good, I'm glad you seem to be trying to master your own tendency to flee then."

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

You can regroup in the room of the dire weasel (as Proteus suggested) if you like without anything bothering you (particularly not the weasel. According to your map, it's only two doors away from the goblins.

Hehe!

Rana holds Ka'kara's gaze, equally unwaveringly. "I have my reasons for what I've done. As I've told this one," he gestures to Roylenna, "I know that I should not have abandoned the group and I shall not do so again."

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

I guess Proteus is ready. He'll wait to see if anyone offers any further suggestions before we make our way into the goblin lair. Proteus says a prayer to Asclepius to keep them all in good health, then casts his spells just before they go through the door.

Just to reiterate
Sandros will get magic weapon (lasting 17 rounds).
The group gets a bless (+1 to attacks and fear saves lasting 18 rounds).
Ka'kara will get a guidance (must be used in 9 rounds).
Rana will get a guidance (must be used in 10 rounds).

Ka'kara and I will take the lead to open doors.

Here's the map. Good luck everyone.

Rana glances over Proteus' shoulder at the map of the lair, then just shrugs.

He does some stretches to get his muscles warmed up, closes his eyes for a moment, muttering something under his breath, and then his eyes snap open with focus. He draws the finely-wrought short sword from its scabbard, looking over the edge carefully. Then he readies the whip, carrying it loosely in his other hand. He nods to the designated door-openers and says, "Ready."

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna studies the map carefully. "These are where they can shoot into the hallway? I wish I had some way to prevent them from seeing us..."

She's thoughtful as she readies her crossbow and loads it. She nods to those bearing the ram. "I'll put the BIG spell on Ka'kara once we know what the rooms are like inside. Can't have you hitting your head, right?"

Female Human Barbarian 7

Ka'kara hefts the battering ram, "You can grab the other side of it when we get to the door Proteus. I can handle it until then." She strides forward toward the her rendevous with the Goblin King.

Sandros takes up his position as well, flanking Ka'kara with Rana across from him. He swings his rapier as though anxious for the fight to begin, but his face is solemn and pensive. Occasionally, he gives a sideways glance at Ka'kara, but says nothing.

Female Halfling Rogue 2

Before they begin their charge on the door Hella asks, "Do we have any sort of thrown weapons, such as acid or the like? And were the arrow slits wide enough to drop then through? It might help us if our enemy is kept busy while we batter at the door."

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

I think I'll handle this turn-by-turn, saving actual initiatives until the fight breaks out.

As you open the second door (at 2817) you hear the door in the end of the corridor slam. The arrow-slits are just as indicated on your map. Anyone behind them has improved cover from you.

What will you do on your first round of actions?

Seeing the door close in front of them, Proteus will take out the rope and tie it around his waist, handing Sandros the other end. He looks at Ka'kara, "I'd suggest you do the same. I figure we have one or two tries." He then takes his side of the portable ram and waits for Kakara to give the word.

She shakes her head, "Don't need a rope getting me all tangled up after we open the door. May need to close quickly with archers." Giving Proteus a moment to tie the rope she says, "Ready?" and then charges forward.

Is this for pulling your body back?

It is...

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

This looks like a good time for rolling for initiative. And Ka'kara can make a check to break down the door at +2 for charging and +2 for Proteus's assistance.

Break down door: 1d20+10=17 Spent one hero point

Initiative: 1d20=11

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Initiative 1d20+3=14

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Initiative (1d20=14)

I think your roll should be a 19 , Ka'kara. Your total bonus should be +12 (+4 for strength, +2 for portable ram, +2 for Proteus help, +2 for charging, and +2 for spending a hero point).

Initiative (1d20+4=20)

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The door cracks somewhat but doesn't budge. I think it's reasonable that the ram should do damage at least as a greatclub, so you can roll if you like.

The goblins go on 15, so Sandros (and possibly Hella and Rana) can act before they do. Also I need your positions. Ka'kara and Proteus would be close to the door, of course.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

I have updated the map. If anyone would like to change positions let me know.

Sandros moves up the hall, ready to back up the rammers as needed.

Move to 3217, on full defense - +6 dodge bonus to AC.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Great club damage roll: 1d10=1 Not sure what the modifiers are on this but with that roll I doubt it does much

Oops, forgot I'm playing for two.

Initiative 1d20+2=9

Rana will keep pace with Sandros along the opposite side of the hall. He will duck under the murder holes on his side and if an arrow comes out of one, he would seriously consider shoving a foot-and-a-half of steel back in. Just to see if they are paying attention.

EDIT: If Sandros is in 3217, please place Rana in 3218.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

How high off the ground are the arrow slits? Basically, would Roylenna have a reasonable expectation of peering through one?

And what are the chances she could put a set of Dancing Lights through one?

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

I would like to use my hero points to ask that Ka'kara reroll her roll to break down the door, if I may BT.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat
Proteus wrote:

You may, but that would cost you 10 hero points, which is rather steep, I think.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The goblins fire four arrows at Ka'kara and Proteus. Ka'kara is hit for 1 point of damage. You may now have another go at the door.

The arrow slits are low enough for Roylenna to peer through and you could even cast spells through them if you like, but the goblins have improved cover, as stated.

Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

Proteus turns to Ka'kara. "Like you mean it this time!" he shouts.

Female Human Barbarian 7

Breaking through the door: 1d20+8=22, 1d10=3

At Proteus' words Ka'kara takes the ram and hits the door with more force.

Sandros spots a shape moving in the arrow slit near him and attempts to thrust his rapier through the slit at it.

Nothing ventured, right?

Rapier attack (1d20+8=19, damage 1d6+2=5)

Don't think that's gonna get the job done...

Female Halfling Rogue 2

Init: 1d20+4=24

Rana attempts futilely to stab one of the hidden archers, as well.

Shortsword attack damage 1d20+3=4, 1d6+3=9

The bonus was wrong, but a natural 1 is a natural 1.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Roylenna slips up alongside Ka'kara and the eastern arrow slot. She will ready an action to fire her Heavenly Fire through the arrow slot when she sees a goblin step up to fire his arrow.

1d20+5=9, 1d6+1=3

Yeah, that's not going to get it done.

Male Human (mostly) Ex-cleric and Grumpy Cat

The door still won't budge, but at least it's creaking.

The goblins concentrate their fire on Ka'kara and Proteus and hit them for 3 points of damage each.

You're up.

Rapier attack (1d20+8=9, 1d6+2=3)

Sandros makes another completely ineffective attack through the arrow slot. "We need that door down, Ka'kara!" he shouts.

Female Halfling Sorcerer (celestial)

Just to get a cohesive list out there:

  • 24 Hella
  • 20 Sandros
  • 15 Goblins
  • 14 Roylenna
  • 14 Proteus
  • 11 Ka'kara
  • 09 Rana

I assume that Proteus would have to delay to Ka'kara's initiative for using the ram, but I didn't alter the list accordingly.

  • Female Halfling Rogue 2

Hella sidesteps up out of view of the first western arrow slot and takes a shot at the nearest eastern arrow slot:

    Attack:1d20+6=13
    Damage:1d6=2

    ...missing.

"If you think you can do better get over here and kick the %@#$@ thing in! Why don't you focus on taking out those archers shooting me in the back instead of telling me something I already know!"

1d20+8=19, 1d10=4 Is the door taking any damage BT?

She is now at 13 out of 24 hitpoints

    Male Human (Alryan) Cleric 3

"Sandros, we know!" Proteus shouts. "Put your back into it, Ka'kara!" Proteus says vehemently as a look of determination comes across his face and he prepares to put everything he has into their next swing.

Just in case you forgot, Ka'kara, you have a guidance spell on you that you can use to add 1 to your roll.

    Updated map.

I totally DID forget! I'll use it on the next roll.

    Female Halfling Rogue 2

Ka'Kara, shouldn't you be applying your strength bonus to the damage?
