Indeed. With the interweb at most of our fingertips, I have no idea how the publishers of those guides still turn a profit.
I imagine it's mostly the convenience of having huge full colour maps and diagrams that you can flick to quickly, and not having to keep a laptop next to you or constantly alt-tab out. I've never bought one myself, but then I'm a massive cheapskate.
Some companies seem to be trying to counteract the loss of sales due to internet guides by trying to create books that do double-duty as coffee-table/art-books. I mean my housemate picked up the limited edition guide for Final Fantasy 12 despite having already completed the game (and not particularly liking it) because it was a big shiny hardback and was just so damn pretty...

I got it because I can sit there and play the game and just look it up when I get stuck instead of having to go and do a search and sit there outside the game.
Also, it came with an awesome double sided poster map of every location/interest point in the game. I have it laminated and hanging next to my computer. :)
Sounds cool flash_cxxi. I would never tell anyone not to buy the strategy guild but it's just something I've never considered because (as the penny arcade comic points out) I have the internet. I love my high speed internet connection, and I can find anything I want on it, so I'd never consider buying something I could get for free, but maybe the book better fits your gaming style. Chances are the strategy guild is better put together. Different strokes for different folks.

Admittedly, some game guides are better than others. A friend loaned me his guide for Oblivion and I found it quite useful for finding locations and getting ideas for character creation and designing magic items.
Then there was Spore, which I received for Xmas with the strategy guide. The book was an interesting read, but for the most part I found the most useful info online in player forums.
I've been getting through Fallout 3 book-free, though I did find a few fun tips online. Now if I could just find a way to get far enough away from my targets before the live grenade I slipped in their pocket goes off...

*slaps forehead* Of course! Thanks, I've got entirely too many of those anyway.

You can also try standing up and running. Also, if you go rogue-ish, one of the perks you get lets you move faster while stealthing.

Yeah it's short, but you got cool Chinese stealth/T51b armor now. And a shocky sword.
The weapons constantly wearing down is a drag though. One of the many pitfalls of Post-Apocolypia I guess.
Supposedly more downloads will let you continue the game.

The second download (The Pitt) comes out in February. Its the entire city of Pittsburg made into a slaver camp!!
The third one (March ?) ups the levels cap to 30 and will

So I know that the downloads cost points for Xbox360 players, but what about those of us playing on the PC? Are these retail add-ons for download?
I have to say that thus far, my favorite portion of the game has been the Oasis. I was not expecting an encounter of that type, and the moral choices there were the most interesting out of everything I've yet seen.

Not sure if I am answering your question, but if you want the DLC for PC, you have to subscribe to Games for Windows Live, and yes, you have to use Live points to purchase the DLC. There is no other way to get it at this time.
I agree with you about Oasis--very well designed area and quest.

Shadowborn |

Haven't been to the Oasis yet. Still kinda reeling from the Tenpenny one.
** spoiler omitted **
Don't feel bad about it. I opted for the longer, more difficult option:

At least 3Dog doesn't call you a scumbag every 10th news story. Then say 'way to go kid' on half of the other ones. lol.

How do you rate? The character I made to run through all the morally bankrupt options nuked Megaton by 7th level and he hasn't said a word about it. I'm about ready to go over to the studio and repaint the walls with his blood and brains. Maybe that will get a reaction out of the guy.
Don't kill him...otherwise all you will get is his assistant playing records and very rarely saying who she is, but nothing about you.
It's more entertaining to keep 3dog alive so you can hear all the horrible stuff he says about you.

"Alright, I've got a new theory. Vault 101... is Hell. And the kid is Evil Incarnate".
I get a thrill everytime I hear that. :)

That's coooool!
Now I gotta play an evil character!

He finally decided to say something nasty about my evil character. It only took three levels and who knows how many days before 3dog decided to notice her for the abomination she is. I'll have to dedicate his bullet to someone else.
Speaking of dedications, I downloaded a mod that puts a lot more music on the GNR station. It's a pretty good selection and cuts down on the monotony.

No more 'whackin and stackin 'em'? Is this a 360 mod?
BTW, did you guys catch Heroes last week? One of the songs from GNR was playing in the watch repair shop scene. Too cool.

I grabbed it online for my PC version. I don't know if the G.E.C.K. allows for player-made content on the 360. Actually, it's a list of 50 songs, including the original GNR lineup. So "Pete the Butcher" is there, but the guy who compiled the tunes also managed to get the flipside of that song on there as well.
I did catch Heroes, but I missed the tune.
I knew Eden's voice was familiar...

I'm thinking about picking the "Special Awesome Extra Secret Groovy Edition" for my computer. The one with the lunchbox and bobblehead inside.
For those that have it... how is the editor? I own and have played it on my 360 - but first I would want to remove the level cap. I know you can in the PC.
Intersting about removing the Level Cap. I haven't tried out the Editor so I can't say, but the Luchbox and Bobblehead are nice. ;)

Paul Ackerman 70 |

Yeah, one of my gaming buddies got it. He played until level 20 then when he realized he wasn't getting any more experience he removed the level cap.
Although, I don't think you really need it. On the 360 with my pure evil character I beat the game at around level 12.. maybe 13. That was a straight main story character. Didn't do the side quests other than what was easily available. Such as blowing up Megaton.
My slower do it all Good character is about half-way thru and a higher level.

You don't need to be high level to win. It IS much easier though if you want to be a full-on explorer... much easier to survive the DeathClaw sanctuary at level 20 than level 10.
I haven't tried any of the levelling-altering mods, but if/when I download one I will probably get one that slows levelling rather than removes the cap. I found after hitting level 10 and doing a lot of exploration, I earned XP crazy fast. I think the level 20 cap wouldn't be noticeable if you had to "earn" your levels with more difficulty (and as you say, you don't need to be high level at all to play the endgame. Fact, it kind of plays itself for you, sadly, but that's a whole other issue).
Speaking of mods, I heartily recommend "Fellout." It's a very simple graphic tweaking mod that does three things:
1) Removes the icky green filter from outdoor areas, so everything isn't the same green/yellow/brown color anymore, which interestingly enough makes a lot of the rust and blood and decay stand out much better
2) Makes nighttime actually very dark, so that you actually notice it's nighttime and makes it much more dangerous to wander around
3) Makes your PipBoy light brighter to help adjust for the increase darkness (but it also blows your stealth to smithereens, so something ot use with caution).
Largely aesthetic, but it's amazing how the dark nights alone really change how you tackle exploring the wasteland.

So... wait. There isn't an actual editor?
There IS an editor. It is called the G.E.C.K. You can download it for free here if you have Fallout 3 for the PC:
http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Main_Page
Just downloadable mods?
There are downloadable mods made by people who own the G.E.C.K, and a few clever folks who can do without the editor. You get them, among other places, at the Fallout Nexus:
Okay.. are the mods made only by the game makers?
No. They are made by players. (The ones I mentioned, the level cap ones and "Fellout" are all made by players using the G.E.C.K.)
Go to the Nexus mentioned above and you will see how much player-made stuff is out there.
The "mods" made by Bethesda are called "patches" and "Official Downloadable Content (DLC)," and they charge you money for the latter. ;)
If you're any further confused, I would consult one of the above sites or check out the Fallout 3 wiki:

No, you were pretty complete. Is there something similar for Oblivion?
This is kinda off topic, but try Here

Not that big. Too quick if you simply follow the quest. I try to explore the heck out of a space so it lasts a little longer. I haven't left yet but I got addicted to Buffout and I can't find a doc.
Can you return to the Pitt once you leave?

You can go back to the Pitt at any time & find all the bars and give them to one of the slavers (if you didn't kill them). He'll give you GREAT stuff.
