Resident Evil 5 has already faced objections for being racist.
I'll be honest I don't get the racist claim. Okay most the enemies (or the ones ive seen) are Black but then again from what I can tell its set somewhere in Africa so you would expect most of them to be (and makes more sence than setting it in an African county and having every single person being white) I mean you dont hear people saying resident evil 4 was racist against the Spanish do you?

Alright, so I still agree with my previous point, that Fallout 3 is not as good as Fallouts 1 and 2, but it's a difference of inches, not miles. It may not do dialogue and humour as well as the originals did, but it makes up for it with a fantastic feeling of exploration, danger, and in some cases, a bit of horror (with a Lovecraftian reference that I thought to be very neat).
The combat is very good, I love the V.A.T.S system. Cresting a hill just to see a huge building in the distance that you want to go check out is a cool feeling. Being hunted down by regulators/Talon mercs is also pretty cool. I like that they kept the freedom of the original games; I rarely feel as though I'm ever constrained (in fact, I jumped ahead in the main story by blundering into an area I shouldn't have found yet).
The original games will always be my favourite for nostalgia as much as gameplay, but I can say that Bethesda's attempt is a worth successor. I'd give this game a tentative 9/10 for now (I've yet to complete it).

Okay, I'm convinced enough to put this on my "to be purchased" list immediately after Wrath of the Lich King, probably in December.
I'm just going to assume that my machine can handle the specs on it. I run Mass Effect cranked up to 11 with zero difficulty. I don't imagine it could be much worse. Unless someone knows of any particular difficulties the game has with 64-bit Vista? I can't imagine a new game would be having these problems, but I've also been surprised in the past.

Got this game a few days ago; really like it--so far, one of the best RPGs I've played. I'm running on a computer that JUST makes the system reqs and it's running fine and looks stunning--so I imagine it's all the better if you can crank up the settings.
Played Fallout 2 a scant few months ago, so can view it without the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia--it was an _excellent_ game, but Fallout 3 is better, IMHO (of *course* YMMV). What's the same between the two is a lot of good stuff: excellent dialogue, excellent balance between being able to wander and do your own thing while also having a good storyline to follow when you want to. Your choices have real consequences and railroading is minimal, if existing at all.
Fallout 2's isometric turn based combat however was sluggish and frustrating (and I played other games of that era that handled that kind of play much better, e.g. Infinity Engine games produced by the same publisher). Isometric turnbased is great for something where you can use group tactics, but Fallout never let you do that (nor should it)--inevitably, you'd try to do something clever and your completely uncontrollable allies would run into your line of fire and get killed.
Fallout 3 on the other hand keeps what was best about the old Fallout's combat--being able to pause, aim, and shoot, now via the V.A.T.S. system--while getting rid of clunky movement and being able to handle combat faster and up close. When not in V.A.T.S, the combat is fast and urgent, like fighting for your life in a post-nuclear wasteland should be.
Generally, the 1st/close 3rd person view suits the Fallout universe extremely well, as you can see the details of this fallen world very well, get a real sense of this place you're trying to survive in. Lots of stuff to scavenge and scrounge for.
Lots of great NPCs and decent voice acting for the most part.
My only complaints are that the "local" minimap SUCKS--it's completely unreadable to me. And I really would like to see actual item descriptions in the PIPBoy inventory interface. That's something the older games did much better.
Some bugs, but game is just released--that's the risk of buying as soon as it come out. Folks who want to avoid technical issues should wait till a patch comes out, but I'd recommend the game to anyone who enjoys a good, intense RPG.

Hello - I'm 25 hours into Fallout 3.
I haven't tried the main quest but have invested those hours in exploring and picking up side-quests that come my way. I've always enjoyed free-exploration games where you can decide/imagine your own role. I've been very happy running around as a post-apocalyptic vigilante.
I love this game. I mean really, really love it. I haven't touched Fable or WoW since turning on Fallout on the morning of it's release. I enjoyed Oblivion a hell of a lot, but Fallout 3 feels more diverse in terms of interior designs and is packed with many more random encounters designed to surprise, delight, intrigue and terrify.
If free-roaming RPG's are your thing, then Fallout3 is a wonderful playground : )

So does that mean FarCry 2 is racist as well? It's set in Africa and most of the enemies in that are Black? It's set in Africa for Christ's Sake! The vast majority of the population is Black! Were the first 60 Resident Evil games racist because they only had White enemies???
Stupid People. Stupid Censors!Oh and I just got Fallout 3 the other day and am just about to leave Vault 101. Seems pretty good so far.

Thanks for the in depth review DeathQuaker! This game sounds better and better all the time!
I have to say that combat in fallout 2 wasn't the best but this wasn't a game I was playing for the combat so I didn't even notice. The Story and setting were what made the fallout series so memorable to me. Combat was just something I needed to suffer through to advance the story.

Well I got the game...
Enjoying it a lot... Much more then Oblivion...They did a better job at story telling for Fallout 3.
The game runs so smooth on my system at the highest settings... Not a problem yet..
Only issue I have is the Local map... It sucks!..

It is in a Side quest you will see later on.

Yes, this is an awesome game. I'm over 120 hours into it, taking my sweet time =:0
I earlier thought I would make it my personal mission to kill every damn Raider, Super Mutant & Talon Mercenary in the game. You know, in the hopes of making the Wasteland safe for others. But then I realized some of those respawn...oh well.
A few quibbles w/ the game (why can't I use other kinds of Power Armor to repair my T-51b special power armor!!!), but nothing too annoying. A few NPCs mysteriously died, too, and I don't know how or why (Sheriff Simms in Megaton, for example).
Favorite weapon has to be the special version of the plasma rifle, followed by the equivalent for the Chinese Assault Weapon (much easier to repair, needless to say).
It really does take the best parts of Fallout & Oblivion. Just wonderful...not sure if I'll do the free DLC coming in the near future, though. I'll likely have moved on to another game by then.

Yeah, Walter the Water Processing Worker just appeared dead at the gates of Megaton after one of my fast travels back there? I have no idea why and I even tried reloading an earlier game and still it happened! Now he just slowly rolls further down the hill towards the crater every time I reenter Megaton. Weird!
I'm maybe wonder ing if it's either a glitch or maybe there is a secret murderer in Megaton and much later on there will be a story about it (although since noone said a thing about Walter's death I'm guessing this may not be it).

I found Sheriff Simms at the bottom of the stairs leading up to his place. He, um, stayed there for quite some time before the body vanished. Weird...Someone also killed Tenpenny, even though I had negotiated a peaceful co-existence between the Ghouls & the prior residents.
Got to be a glitch. One of the traders has vanished, which is unfortunate for my little empire of repair gnomes, but oh well. He was likely killed in the Wasteland by a wandering encounter.

There's a glitch in the game in which NPCs fall off the balconies in Megaton and die. Luckily, most of them have a back-up (Sheriff Simms's son takes over for dad, etc.). None of that matters if you rightfully decide to nuke Megaton, though.*
It's funny to read all of the negativity at the beginning of this thread. The game is phenomenal. Easily the best available on the 360 to date.
WAY better than Oblivion. Is it as good as Fallout 1 or 2? Honestly, I can't remember anymore. This version is really, really good.

* Just be sure to steal the Strength bobble head from Sheriff Simms's house before you do.

Thanks for that Erik.
Now I have noone to sell to so I can make a killing in the Scrap Metal Market!Oh and thanks for the location of the Strength Bobble Head Erik! ;)
I did buy the Guide (frickin' thick sucka it is too: 464 pages!) but mainly for the area map and all of the locations in the game. Having a look at the map there are sooo many. You could get lost playing this game for years and still never have to do any of the main quest, just secondary locations!

If that's the glitch, that explains what happened to Tenpenny ;-)
I just finished the game, clocking in just under 150 hours. I just made sure I did 95%+ of everything possible before diving into the last 3rd of the main quest, which is fun to do all at once.
Let me be the 1st to come out and say while I loved Fallout 1 & 2, this surpasses them. Took the best parts of Oblivion and made something truly wondrous. Phenomenal game (at least on the 360 version).
Looking forward to the imminent announcement that The Witcher will be coming out for consoles in 2009, as noted in Europe already...

I just reached Tenpenny last night. I'm hoping to go the negotiated peace route myself, but my character is more kitted for Guns and Lockpicking, so I'm not confident of my success. One of two Speech successes I had was with the Family, so I was happy about the Bonus Perk.
I'm gonna run around the wasteland as well and get some of the extras out of the way before I continue on with the Main Quest.
I am playing my character as a goody goody at the moment, so I hope to start again once I'm done and play a real bastard, picking up Jericho and making friends with the Slavers in Paradisie Falls. Stuff like that!

![]() |

Have finished twice..1st time as a good guy right through to the end..2nd time as a total bastard..nuked Megaton...let the ghouls run rampant at Tenpenny..then killed them and took the whole tower for myself..sold people into slavery..all the truely bad karma stuff..and then managed to get back into positive karma by the end...a story of redemption

You can always do what I did when you know you have a Speech challenge coming: save & reload 'til you get it right ;-)
I can't bring myself to play as a bad guy. I made it my personal mission to wipe out the Slavers, Mutants, Raiders & Talon Mercenaries, including at their main bases. But hold off on the Slavers b/c you might need them around for part of the main quest...

That's exactly what I did and got the negotiated peace. When I went back to the Tower though, Tenpenny was gone? Do you see him again, or was that what you were referring to earlier?

The only thing I didn't like about the game is the really low level cap. You max out at level 20 unlike Oblivion witch caps at level 50. I saved several locations with very hard locks only to find out that I peaked and would never be able to go back and see what's in them. I'm working my way through a second time, specializing in sneak, smallguns, lockpicking and speach, being very carefull not to waste any level.

![]() |

Ok, sure, none of it is realistic, but there's a big range between "works within the world" and "I guess if you were drunk you might find it funny, even though it makes no sense at all, even withing the basic concepts of the world."
Sort of like all the random encounters in the various Fallout games?

I got this for Christmas, it was tough waiting for it, but it was well worth the wait. I have a couple of complaints:
1) weapon and armor degradation: Things just fall apart too quickly. You have to repair constantly. Every battle almost. Now I now weapons need to be maintained IRL, but you'd think the weapons used in the wastelands would be sturdier. Also I hate the fact that I need do take apart other weapons to fix on my own. I have a character with nearly 90 repair, access to a work bench, tons of salvaged items, and I can still only repair my items by cannibalizing other items for parts.
2)power armour: Why is there only one person in the game capable of training you in the use of power armour? Why is it so difficult to use? Why does power armour weigh anything if you're wearing it? It's power armour!
3) Hand to hand: So why is it we can't target in VATS when using hand to hand or melee weapons?
4) I love the cohorts but they really are a pain sometimes. I'm not going to get into details but lets just say that I hate them almost as much as I love them. Also why is it that there's no exp for combined kills?
5) Mods: Love 'em! But I think Bethesda could have made installing them a little less painful.
Despite all this I think this is an awesome game! Now that I've figured out to install the mods I should be able to fix most of my other complaints.

Guy Humual wrote:3) Hand to hand: So why is it we can't target in VATS when using hand to hand or melee weapons?Huh? I've been able to use VATS targeting in melee just fine.
You can't target a specific body parts, at least not in my game, and so the only advantage I see to using VATS for hand to hand is the reduced damage you seem to take while in bullet time. In the old Fallout games I was able to punch someone's head off with targeting, now, using the VATS, I'm only able to target the body in general.

I finally beat this game last night. I must say that I'm disappointed with the ending:
Yet ultimately, no matter what sort of life the PC lives, the PC ends with 3 choices . . .
and what's with my radiation immune companions not willing to help? Charon is immune to radiation but he would apparently rather have the player (or the brotherhood of steel chick) die rather then take a minute to pop in and enter the code. Apparently the robot feels the same way (never had him as a companion). Strangely Fawkes feels that it's the PC (or Lyons') destiny to die a meaningless death for something that might have been a minor inconvenience to her. Fawkes is highly immune to radiation, she is a good character, and was willing to risk her life earlier in the story when she and the PC were just strangers. But for some reason she believes it's the player's destiny to die?
Sad, sad, sad. I can forgive the human characters for not wanting to give their lives but why wouldn't radiation immune companions want to help? The impact of the player's choice was cheapened by the companions apparent callous pettiness.
Also how is it that Autumn is able to survive the radiation but the PC isn't? At the time of my PC's untimely death she had 58 pills of rad-x and 28 packs of Rad away as well as power armour and cyborg parts. Yet I die and Autumn was only knocked down.
Also who cleaned up the bodies?
Great game, but the end was lacking.

I picked up the game this week and I've managed to log a few hours on it. So far, it's pretty good. I had a funny little incident in the D.C. ruins on my way to Rivet City.
I hit a highly fortified building; it had ruined cars stacked up with sheet metal and barbed wire to form a pretty formidable wall. I was investigating when I came under fire. I ran for cover so I could get out the scoped magnum and see who was shooting at me.
It was a good thing I did, because one of the cars in the wall caught fire and blew up, causing a chain reaction of big explosions in the surrounding cars. After things stopped flying around, I investigated and found three dead super mutants on the other side of the barricade. There was also a trader's brahmin wandering alone. Upon further investigation, I found a bloody leg that belonged to a fellow whose name ended in "the Lucky." It was the only piece of him I could find, but it had all his equipment on it, including a key...now if I can just figure out where his supply shed is.

I will add my hat to the ring: Fallout 3 is just awesome (PS3 version). I am taking my own sweet time, exploring places carefully and interacting with the fauna. The options available to the character and the sheer openness of the game make it truly memorable. I became so interested in my side quests that I completely forgot why I left the vault. If you thought Oblivion was great for open-ended play, then you will love Fallout 3.

I'm sure that the ones that are more computer savvy than I have found this already, but since i refuse to spend 30-40 dollars for a guide, I went and found the Fallout Wiki instead.

If someone could link it for the masses to use that would be appreciated.
Enjoy!

I'm reminded of this classic Penny Arcade comic when people talk about strategy guilds:
I got it because I can sit there and play the game and just look it up when I get stuck instead of having to go and do a search and sit there outside the game.
Also, it came with an awesome double sided poster map of every location/interest point in the game. I have it laminated and hanging next to my computer. :)
