KnightErrantJR's Age of Worms in Faerun PbP Planning Thread

Play-by-Post Discussion

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Hey everyone. I just wanted to get a planning thread up here so we can hash out everything before the game starts up. The campaign will start in Daggerford in 1369 DR, and I'm hoping to have everyone take classes from the Pathfinder Alpha 3 rules.

I'll send out a link to everyone to come back to this thread, and you guys can start brainstorming what you want to play, and I'll check back in and try to forge it into a starting point for the campaign.

I think I explained this before, but I'll be keeping track of position on my own graph paper here at home, and we'll be doing initiative by "sides," with the initiative modifiers that you have averaged per the entire party.

That way, in combat, everyone can post and get their actions in, and then all of the opposition can act, etc.

I'm going to send out the e-mails now, and I'll talk to you guys once we start brainstorming.

Scarab Sages

Bardolph Buckwallow, Human Wizard and general Drunken Lout, Daggerford native.

Sound good? I'm going to assume 20-point buy with PFRPG rules--If it's different, I'll be glad to revise. Shall I post my finished character here?

Also, starting level = 1?

Let me know if any of this doesn't work.

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Starting level would be one, and yeah, the 20 point buy will work out well for this. Go ahead and make him up, but don't buy equipment yet. I've got something planned for that.

So, we've got an arcane caster, how is everyone else viewing things on the character front?

I just realized that I didn't mention where to post it. Go to your "My Account" tab at the top of the page, and there should be a box below your "Message Board Settings" box that is called "Message Board Aliases," and it should have an option to create new message board alias.

Make up an alias with your character's name, and put your stats in the profile section of that alias.

Scarab Sages

Sounds good. Points of clarification:

Arcane Bond - I'm not buying equipment yet, but do I get an arcane-bonded item for free? I'm considering using a shortsword (proficiency gained through the martial weapon proficiency from being human) as my arcane-bonded item, and it stipulates that the bond be with a masterwork item, which I don't believe most people can buy at first level.

Hand of the Apprentice: If I go generalist, would there be any complications in using this ability with my arcane-bonded shortsword?

Hand of the Apprentice, 2: If I were to multiclass into rogue, can I sneak attack with this ability? I can't flank (it doesn't threaten) but on an unaware/flatfooted/otherwise flanked opponent, would I be able to get a sneak attack in?

Specializations: Am I reading the book right in that specialist wizards no longer get a bonus to DC when casting spells from their specialized school?

Danke,
JB

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Yes, you should have your arcane bonded object already.

No, there shouldn't be any problem with using that with a weapon, as long as its in the 5 lbs. limit on the "mage hand like" hand of the apprentice.

I'm running with them not getting a bonus, since it wasn't stated in the rewritten wizard entry.

Hope that helps.

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Oh, before we get going to far into this, after you guys make your profiles, don't look at one another's quite yet. If you want someone else to see your profile, that's fine, but until people want to give out a bit of information, don't click on it if, if you would.

Male

I'll take the role of Cleric. Probably dwarven, but no other details as of yet... We'll see how that goes. Most likely an out-of-towner from the Sword Coast, unless someone (read: KEJR) has a better idear.

/d

I'm here and planning on making a Combatant/Face paladin type character. Which deity exactly and some of the other finer details I'm still working out, but that's what I'm going for.

Sorry, it took me a bit of time to get on. Let me take a second look at the Alpha 3 rules today, and I'll get back to you. Of hand I'm thinking of a straight up fighter. A merc whose party and employer recently bit it, and has been doing small time enforcer work since.

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Looks like a good tenative line up so far. Let me know if you guys have any further questions with character creation, other than the point buy, starting equipment, and the like that we went over.

As soon as you guys have some character stats firmed up a bit more, I'll start feeding you some regional background to flesh it all out.

Ok, got my character ready to go I think. Profile is up. He's a dual wielding fighter.

Also, my co-worker Bryce will be joining us in the game. Not sure what he's planning yet, but he'll be on soon to let you know.

I've got my profile all set up as well. There are still a few minor holes in the details on his background, but I'll be able to fill those in once I've got the details on the area.

Male

I should have my character profile up soon. I did go for the full-on dwarven Cleric. This should be an interesting (read: Fun) thing to do.

With Glenndo there going with a fighter, you can switch me around to a Face/Combatant. A minor change, yes, but still a change. Also, when we gonna get more info on starting equipment? I'm interested in what exactly you meant earlier by "had an idea"...

OK, Bryce was thinking about playing a rogue, but went a different route, so it all works out. he should be getting on today to introduce himself I think.

BTW, for those who don't know me. My name is Glenn, and was part of KEJR and Darkmeer's group back in Champaign. I'm living in Cleveland now as an engineer. Nice to meet you all!

Hello Gents,

I should have my character profile up soon. I'm going for a Halfling Bard. I know, but don't laugh until you see him in action.

BTW, My name is Bryce. I live in Cleveland and work with Glenn. It's a pleasure to meet all of you!

Enjoy,
Bryce

Scarab Sages

Hello Glenn and Bryce! I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you IRL, but I'm currently a player in KEJR's (bi)weekly FR campaign in Champaign. I'm from New Mexico originally, and I'm a grad student in Linguistics here. Good to meet you guys. This should be fun; I'm really excited about playing a wizard for the first time. Also, I think I'm going to look for a new (read: less disturbing and off-putting) avatar. Horrorshow!

EDIT: No, I like this avatar.

So I guess we got a pretty well rounded party! Fighter, wizard, rogue, cleric, and. . . bard! Can't wait to see what the big equipment surprise is! Hopefully we all are limited to using whips, how fun that would be!

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Yehah . . . ::snap::

and fedoras . . .

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Anyway, welcome aboard Bryce. As for equipment, you guys will be buying that once the campaign starts up, and I'll tell you how much you have to spend once we get going. Let me know when everyone is ready with everything but equipment, and we'll get rolling. I think everyone is pretty close, but I want to make sure no one wants to make any last second changes.

Scarab Sages

Ready to go. Feel free to nix the last two languages on my list if they're not something I could have gleaned a working understanding of from scraps, tidbits, and various archeological finds passing through my periphery. I DO have that many languages, though :)

Male Dwarf Cleric of Moradin

Iah'm ready to go all. This shall be quite the adventure, shan't it. Although a nice shade hat fits mah head a wee bit better than one of them there fancy feedoooras.

Male Human: Tethyrian Fighter 1

Ready when you fellers are. Though, perhaps for those of us new to PBP Jared can give us a run down on the basics and changes that are made to accommodate the style.

Male Halfling Bard/1

Ready!

Male Human Rogue 1

I'd have to say that I believe I'm ready as well, folks.

Male Human Wizard (Generalist) / 1

(in a sneering sort of mumble)
This "Matt" character says that I have to post now, since everyone else's character is. Hmph. As if I don't have more important things to be doing! You'd think I existed at his very whim! Bah! Well that's it, I'm not spending any more time on this nonsense! On with it!

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Alright, great, we'll get rolling soon, and I'll post the actual PbP thread in the appropriate area and get things rolling.

A few things on how I'm planning on handling things:

1. Initiative per "side" will be averaged by the modifiers of everyone on that side, so once its your "side's" turn, post your actions when you get the chance, and we'll resolve them when they get posted.

2. I'll wait until everyone has posted in a given "scene" before moving on. For example, if you guys are interrogating someone, even if, say, the human fighter is doing most of the talking, I'll wait for everyone to say "I'm standing over his shoulder glaring," or "I'm not going to interfere, just wait to see what's happening," and once everyone posts, I'll move on and resolve what's going on.

3. I'll keep track of position on my own graph, and do my best to let you know if you can move somewhere with a move, or a double move, or if you will provoke at AoO or anything like that.

4. I may use the spoiler tags to send information to a specific character or group of characters, so if the spoiler says something like,

For Buckwallow:

Spoiler:
Example

Its intended just for that character, so if you would, refrain from clicking any spoilers not addressed to your character.

5. I trust you guys, so roll your own dice. All I ask is that when you post a number, you tell me what the number pertains to . . . for example:

Diplomacy Check = 22; Perception (Visual) = 16

Just so I don't get confused on what the roll was all about. Once you post your roll and the number, I'll let you know what's going on based on that number (and if its combat, I'll tell you to go ahead and roll damage if you hit, for example).

6. Just as an example of how this should go, when you post, post what your character is doing or saying first, "in character," and then if you need to make any die rolls, or if you need to reference specific rules, do it using the [ ooc ][ /ooc ] tags (without the spaces, of course).

For example:

Tograth enters the cavern, sniffing around for any familiar smells.

"Always follow yer noise, me grandsire allus' said," the dwarf quipped.

Tograth makes a perception (smell) check to see if he recognizes any scents.

Perception (Scent) = 17

If you have any questions, let me know, and I'll try to shoehorn some time in to get the actual thread for this started, but tonight I'm taking the kids to the fair and tomorrow is game night, so time is at a premium, but I'll work on it as soon as I can, I promise.

Male Human . . . ish . . .

Alright, the thread is up and running. You can find it here:

Strange... The post isn't showing.

Edit: Nevermind...

Male Human . . . ish . . .

I almost forgot, unless anyone has any objections, I'd like to try out the extra hp at 1st level sidebar. Personally, I'm not a huge fan (I kind of like fragile 1st level characters), but I thought in the interest of playtesting, I'd give it a shot and see how it works out.

I'm thinking the straight +6 hp for everyone

And how sad is it that I downloaded the PDF for the first adventure, the conversion notes, and the all of that onto a folder at work, "just in case?"

Wow, I'm ganna have a crap load of HP now. Second, this game has given me a reason to GO to work, so don't feel to bad! :)

Sorry I didn't post anything last night. Our internet was out, so I was offline for a bit.

Hey KEJR, sorry to interrupt you thread. I noticed that a few of us here are running AoW pbp games and wondered if you’d be interested in an ideas sharing thread? Conversion and running of the game for pbp, that sort of thing.

Sure . . . I'll post my link in a bit to my old thread where I started brainstorming some FR specific ideas for my set up over at Candlekeep.

Male Human . . . ish . . .

I love moments like that last one . . . for everyone that knows what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know if you are able to embed images in posts?

This is the best I can do at the moment, i.e. hosting an image and then linking to it. Click link below.
