Ravenloft, a land of mists and shadows and half-whispered stories.
Ravenloft, a place where heroes are tested, and often fail.
Ravenloft, an idea born in the mists of time and brought to life by the darkness of the hearts of Man.
Ravenloft, your new home.
Greetings, I’m looking for a gathering of players interested in playing through the Ravenloft Module Night of the Walking Dead using the Pathfinder Alpha rules. I’m going to use this as a test to see how easy conversion is, as well as a chance to run a great module. Once this module is finished the option may be given to continue on to the second in the series of six. Who knows, we may get through all six and face the Grand Conjunction itself.
Character generation,
Characters will be 1st level and can be created using the 3.5 PHB and the Alpha 3 download. No other sources are currently allowed.
Point Buy using the Alpha rules. Low Fantasy at 10 points.
Hit points, Max for first level plus Constitution modifier. Than add an extra number equal to your Constitution score.
Starting funds are rolled vie the rules in the 3.5 PHB. Please use Invisible Castle
Game Idea
Each character will start out outside of the Realm of Dread and on their own, or you can team up with one other character if you like. Then the characters will be drawn, unknowingly into Ravenloft. That is where the fun begins. For this game I’m going for a more Low Fantasy feel so there won't be a lot of magic items or other such things floating around.
I am looking for four players, and it isn’t necessarily first come first served. I’m looking for interesting character ideas and compelling story hooks that I can use to flesh out the game around you.
Please also note that this game will not be making much use of maps. I’m hoping to keep things on a description only basis to keep the tension going.
My intention is that this game will be heavy on character interaction as well as fostering relationships with NPCs. I'm modifying the module itself to fit this style as well as the low magic feeling that I am going for.

An interesting idea, but for now I'm sticking to the original plan. Should a character die during the module then the player can, if they choose, create a native. The idea is that everybody has no idea that Ravenloft even exists at the beginning of play, thus adding to the fun of discovery, and the surprise when the 'rules' of life don't seem to work the way they are supposed to.

Well, that makes two people who have stated potential interest. I have two more statements of potential interest that haven't posted here yet. I was hoping for four characters so, if everyone joins up, we should be good. Otherwise I'll see about changing things around to work with a smaller party.
Please let me know when you have a character idea. Here are some sample ideas for those who are suffering thinker's block.
-A Varisian fortune teller making her way along the road trying to catch up with the rest of her caravan.
-A villager traveling to visit some relatives.
-A thief on the run from the law in the dead of night.
-A dwarf exploring a new cavern seeking a vein of ore.
-A hunter stalking a stag through the early morning mists.
-A wizard's apprentice running errands for his/her master in the dead of night.
-A newly appointed cleric traveling to the village or town that he has been given charge of.
These are just examples and ideas. Feel free to come up with your own.
I'm leaving this open until about Noon on Monday, that's noon California time. Please be sure to post by then.

I’m thinking that my character will be a human, self taught wizard. A now dead relative was a wizard, and at a young age the character inherited an old, dilapidated house and a cache of spellbooks and tomes of magical instruction. For years he has dwelt as a recluse, teaching himself the art of magic. He is naturally brilliant, but after so many years of living as a hermit in rather depressing environs he has become socially awkward and perhaps a little paranoid and odd.
He has taken a rare journey away from home, having exhausted most of the books he owns, he has heard of some rare magical tomes for sale in a distant town, and has begun the journey there to view them.

Just saw the topic and dang!
Mothman already got the arcanist =/
I was thinking about making a sorcerer, native from Earth, that would discover his powers by the time of arrival at Ravenloft. Also, he'd think that the powers origin is God.
Well, I'll think about something else by tomorrow.
(I dont think that would be wise to have 2 arcane spellcasters in a Ravenloft adventure)

Hey Pendragon, sorry about that. The main reason I suggested to play a wizard was to test out the alpha rules for wizards … the concept sort of came later and its kind of growing on me. BUT, if you’re really set on a sorcerer, let me know, I can play something else.
Wiglaf, do you want those questions answered generally on the thread, or hidden behind “DM Eyes Only” spoilers? Either way is fine with me.

No problem Moth, I think Ill go with a fighter, monk or rogue, then.
It will not be the same as "Im the channel of god's power" but, still in his eyes, everything will be a lot like miracles, wich can also be very interesting.
Anyway, Ill have to figure out what epoch will be the best for RP.
maybe renaissance, for all the science advancement, and the denial of God.
(please don't expect me to write in olde english, I don't want to butcher the language more than I already do)

What does he love? What is he truly frightened by?
Does he have a life goal?
What does he hate?
He loves knowledge; the accumulation of it, the thrill of discovery, knowing secrets that few others know.
He is frightened of the thought of not being in control of himself, particularly of his own mind ... there are things he has read, ways of gaining further knowledge and magical power through pacts with dark beings and exploration of strange dimensions. This both thrills and frightens him, and he knows that he may oneday be forced to tread a thin line between getting what he desires and losing control.
His goal is the accumulation of knowledge and magical power - not to gain power over others, but simply to know that he is powerful. There is another, underlying goal, that he is only dimly aware of; to be liked, admired, needed - appreciated for his knowledge and power, but more than that ... to be accepted.
He hates the destruction and loss of knowledge - burning books etc. He also hates that he often has to hide his craft and profession from those who fear or misunderstand magic.

Hi all, I'm one of the others that Wiglaf mentioned as having an interest who hadn't posted on this board yet.
With the Alpha rules, the classes that had really caught my eye were the wizard, cleric and rogue. Looks like we already have our arcane side vouched for, and a paladin for a martial bent, so I think I am going to lean towards the rogue. If the last member would rather not be a cleric however, I would have no problem filling in that role instead.
--Possible Backstory Outline
If we are going to have our characters brought to Ravenloft through the mists, I suspect that I am going to go all the way with the alpha for him and have the character originally be from Golarion.
I am picturing him as a forlorn elf whose parents wound up in Korvosa after the departure from Mierani forest while his mother was still pregnant with him. While he was technically born healthy he was something of a runt due to his family being near to starving living in the shingles of the city.
When he was still just a child his parents were killed in what was arguably a turf war or simply a robbery from members of a gang of thugs in the city. Though rumors persist that his parents were actually involved with some of the underworld dealings that could have led to their murder he completely discounted these possibilities and the loss of his family fueled a permanent change within the boy.
Growing up in an orphanage in Old Korvosa the maintained that hatred for those who killed his family and for all those like them. Even as he grew older he stayed a small man and knew that he would not have strength to face against these villains directly, so he took to learning their ways in order to challenge them on their own ground from the shadows, never considering that if he parents did have a role in the underworld then the deaths he would cause would not be so different then their own.
Still, it is surprisingly easy to sleep with blood on your hands when you believe you have stopped some injustice and there is always a greater evil to face or a new villain to thwart. As his skills have grown with practice he has come to feel that its time to move beyond eliminating a gangs muscle in a back alley or one of its accountants as they stumble drunkenly from a pub and he decided to move on and try to slip into one of the gang's leader's homes to stop some of the evil at its source.
It was this attempt at cold blooded vigilantism that found him fleeing through the sewers from both the intended victims bodyguards as well as, ironically, the town watch. The plan was to duck out one of the pipes that dumps into the harbor and find a spot to lay low for a while until things could be sorted out, but that damnable fog rolling in from outside makes it far easy to get lost in, especially when you can't even see the pipe itself around you.
-------
Naturally the final part of that as an entrance can very easily be changed to suit the intro for the campaign, as could any other parts of his story. This could be quite an enjoyable character to play alongside the paladin, both having similar ends but very different means of getting there.
If there are any problems or you'd prefer a different style to him(I figured a dark vigilante type would fit well in the setting) then I can adjust, otherwise I'll get a character whipped up stat-wise pretty shortly.
-Tarlane

That looks good Tarlane. I don’t see there being any serious problems that we can’t overcome through character interaction. So, feel free to go ahead and put your character together.
Alright, the game is now closed to new-comers. We have four characters and that is what I wanted. Anyone who is interested in being put on a waiting list may post here. I’m going to start an OOC thread for us and we can move character creation there.
Edit to add; Here is a link to the new thread.
