ENWorld has added 'Fan Creation Pick of the Week' for 4.0

4th Edition

As a fence sitter, I don't like what this means. The ENWorld Pick of the Week is only selected from 4.0 stuff. From ENWorld's perspective, I think this makes sense. I think it will continue to build the wall between the communities and the boards. But I guess that is the reality.

Just wanted people to know that 4.0 stuff is out there.

Edit: ENWorld is where I went for news for 'D&D'. I did not even know they had boards until I heard Paizian's talking bad about the ENWorld boards because of 4.0.

Scarab Sages

Like it or not, ENWorld is now a 4E board through and through, despite what moderators are saying. Other game systems are footnotes or side dishes. Which includes 3rd ed, despite it being a rather lengthy/heavy one.

It's understandable, really. What I don't like is the relative hypocrisy of it all.

What did you think? No one would want to talk about 4th edition at ENWorld? Of coarse there is going to be a lot of posts about it. But in no way is any 'other rpg' talk being limited.

I bet you can talk about Pathfinder at Enworld and not get a 10th of the grief from other posters like you get from talking about 4E over here.

No, that would have been naive. Of course people will talk about 4E. And of course, people can still talk about other systems. This is part of what I meant: it's just factual, nothing to be really surprised about.

People can talk about whatever edition of DnD they want there. It's just 4E that's being talked about the most at the moment. Not surprising as it's the edition just released and the one now being supported. They're not doing anything out of the ordinary. 4E is just now the current official edition of DnD.

I think the appropriate place to talk about ENWorld policies would be over there, not here.

So what was the 'pick of the week'? Or is this just teasing?

Please don't make me go look, I prefer to do my browsing/loafing on Paizo boards.

I agree Gary. Oh yeah, sorry about that comment earlier about everybody that plays 4e is a d*#%!!!. It was a little harsh.

This week the pick is a fan created Myconoid (spelling). You know, the Mushroom people.

Reference loafing. I know there are people like you. That is why I posted. NOW GO LOOK! I am not going to do all the work.

Can someone who might be more familiar with licensing explain the rules that allow these to be posted vs. other types of content?

For example the Myconian race seems to be based upon previous WotC materials and the structure of the entry seems to match what they've used in other products.

Even more so, it seems like the Excel spreadsheet listing all the monsters and their stats is skirting the line of IP.

Can someone more familiar with licensing comment? NOTE: I am not asking for amatuer licensing "opinions" necessarily. Someone who actually has dealt with this sort of thing is preferred. :-)

Homebrew materials are almost always going to be edition specific, why on earth should they not label which edition they are made for?

And saying that ENworld is somehow biased in favor of 4e is nuts, that place is full of anti-4e nerd rage and nit-picking over foolish stuff. Or do they need to put up a sign saying '4e is teh suck' on the front page to be 'fair and balanced'?

As weird as it will probably sound to people around here, anti-4E nerd rage is what drove me AWAY from ENWorld to the ... uh, loving ... embrace of the Paizo 4E boards. Honest truth, that.

I came here to get away from both the 4E and 3.5E bashing on the WotC forums.

I think ENWorld gets a bum rap as overly pro-4E over here, but yeah the WotC forums are pretty crazy. Always have been (even in the heart of 3E I didn't go there, since the lunatics were pretty much running the asylum even then ... at least IMO)

Hell, EN World just put a temporary ban on edition war threads into effect. Twas getting a bit flamey in the General Rules section.

Not actually commenting on your post (don't look at ENworld boards much) but personally I hate the term "nerd rage".

At the risk of hijacking this thread further, I hate the word "antidisestablishmentarianism," but they still had a little boy use it in a recent Dairy Queen commercial. Grrr!

Seriously, though. It's all semantics. Why is it even important?

I remember being on a World of Warcraft forum and someone going absolutely ballistic because he hated everyone using the term "toon" to designate a character in the game. I nearly fell out of the chair laughing at the dude.

More in tune with the actual subject of the thread, I've been enjoying what's been picked in that new feature so far. The converted monster list that was posted today is most helpful, even if they're favoring heroic tier character challenges so far.

I'm personally looking forward to whatever else gets picked.

I've got a member of my gaming group that refers to his DnD characters as "toon's". Yes, he came from WoW (before 4e was announced thank you very much)

On 4E Game Day we had more than a few people refer to the monsters as mobs.

I'll admit to finding myself calling monsters mobs from time to time. I do find the description of a character as a toon distasteful, however.
